AIBU to have an an epiphany at 40 years old

Sillycally · 14/10/2026 13:58

Hi Guys.
Just wondering where I went wrong in life, the outside looks perfect, house, 2 cars, kids, dog, good jobs etc ....

If life was a box, are you

(A) In the box looking outside the box

(B) Outside the box looking in the box

(C) There isn't option C, you are either of the options above

At 40 years old my epitome is, I have been living as an option A, however, I think I am an option B

YANBU = Clarity
YABU = Delusions / Menopause

Life isn’t a box.

Life is a box of chocolates...

OCDmama · 14/10/2026 16:38

Do I want to be in the box or out the box? Which means you're happy/content/are freely yourself?

ThatCyanCat · 14/10/2026 16:40

Can you be freely yourself, or even know what that means, with no context/benchmark for comparison?

If a tree falls in the forest, and nobody is around to hear it...

Autumnbootcamp · 14/10/2026 16:45

This is not your average thread.

The inside/outside the box thing reminds me of an LSD trip in my naughty teens. I had the "episiotomy" that I'd been looking at the whole world or universe from only one prespective, and there were infinite other perspectives too.... I even drew a diagram

XigDoop · 14/10/2026 16:52

Sounds like a mid life crisis. You'll come out the other side

RappelChoan · 14/10/2026 17:00

Are you living in a box
Are you living in a cardboard box

WhatterySquash · 14/10/2026 17:02

Well I voted YABU because I'm not sure what you mean, but I think am inside the box of my own life. But I am outside the box of normality/convention/a stereotyped "box" of what life should be like IYSWIM. So if I was living that kind of "it all looks perfect from the outside" kind of life it wouldn't feel like it was me and therefore I'd feel outside the box.

Confused
FuroshusDogg · 14/10/2026 17:06

If the box has brass handles on the outside and a velvet lining, you have reached the point where you no longer need to worry about any of it.

BandyUrnham · 14/10/2026 17:15

I've never heard of the Schrodinger's cat, you are clearly very intelligent😊
You have now. Do you feel more intelligent for it?

Autumnbootcamp · 14/10/2026 17:17

One could argue that the constrains of having to keep on eating, sleeping, breathing, blinking etc all the time mean that life is a major box whether we like it or not.

Any dramatic midlife changes we might make will always be within the same box (of life).

So maybe it's not new experiences we need, but to see the same experiences with new eyes.

Before enlightenment chop wood carry water, after enlightenment same deal, as they say.

@QiBengong

Wow, that is a class response.

I've never heard of the Schrodinger's cat, you are clearly very intelligent😊

I suppose I am metaphorically speaking within my AIBU

The "box" is your mentality, and the A or B options are how YOU conform to societal expectations.

For example....

Watch ‘Big Bang’. Plenty of references to the cat there.

teeteringontheborderline · 14/10/2026 17:21

Well I don't know which option I am but I know I'm not drunk enough for this thread

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 14/10/2026 17:24

Maybe you need to be put back into your box? 😆🤔😉

Just kidding. And yes, i get the epiphany... but, alas, mine is forever delayed, unfortunately...😆😳

Skdkhvyvrhej · 14/10/2026 17:26

I accidently left the box in the rain and it’s a bit soggy now.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 14/10/2026 17:28

JuliaAgrippina · 14/10/2026 16:10

An epiphany is a sudden, striking realization or intuitive insight that allows a person to understand a problem, situation, or concept from a new and deeper perspective - they do not tend to involve muliple choice or boxes

IME boxes choices are for cats.

I've been ruptured!

Ruptured* *means to burst, break, or tear open suddenly, usually under physical pressure or stress - do you mean rumbled meaing discovered?

Is this I have a house two kids is there more to life moment - cause that's probably just middle age.

I wanted kids cats and a house and have them - I think other things like to live on the moon and to be an international spy/world renounce nobel prizing winning scientist were always going to be out of reach really. Not sure where that leaves me with your box choices.

Edited

Is there an epiphany for life in general? I'd love to have one for mine. I'm always thinking of that line from the Gary Go song, "Wonderful" when I reflect on my life: "The person who you were has died, You've lost the sparkle in your eyes..." 🥺

alcovecupboards · 14/10/2026 17:30

Just out of interest - did you do much acid this afternoon?

@alcovecupboards of course not, just 2 lines and a joint 😂

I gave up wine boxes a long time ago
so life is like a box of chocolates
a bit like this post

I'm a livin' in a box
I'm a livin' in a cardboard box

maybe ask Pandora?

I think those are the road to damascus events that happen in history sometimes.

Mostly it's people fretting about the road not traveled - and wondering if the grass greener or other path or not.

I think very few every had option of the yellow brick road adventures or paved with gold option - more likely simlarish roads with few pot holes and gravel just in different places but some with better street lighting.

Eh?

My vote is option D, you bought a bottle of Baileys at the weekend to put away for Christmas, but you got bored and opened it today and had it for lunch.

Yep

Unless you are a vampire.

CrowsInMyGarden · 14/10/2026 19:12

I've been locked inside your heart shaped box for weeks

MadinMarch · 15/10/2026 15:47

A box is for life, not just for Christmas...
