To comment on every single “Die de Muertos” pub party that’s its cultural appropriation?

I’ve seen so many parties popping up around my county that are using AI slop to advertise their “Day of the Death” parties when a) nobody who’s Mexican has been consulted b) the food has nothing to do with Mexican food c) it’s a solemn family occasion - not a fiesta! And no, we don’t do face painting.

Every single time I see one, my eye twitches! I’m sure if a random persons (that had nothing to do with Hinduism) decided to throw a “Diwali party” people wouldn’t stay quiet.

Sorry it’s been one of those days and needed a rant!

Just thinking about this OP is you anger and frustration going to achieve anything do you think Pubs will stop their celebrations if you messaged them?

I very much doubt it so it might be better for your own peace of mind to ignore and decide not to get angry about this.

Think of of it this way the money spent will cycle back into the community you are part of perhaps the landlord or employee uses your services or the extra tax as a result goes into the pot. That can only be a good thing.

Are you being dense deliberately?!

Imagine you’re part of the British diaspora living in Sharm, and you still observe the 2 minutes silence and wear a poppy. Local Egyptians decide to run remembrance raves to make money and there’s no act of remembrance whatsoever. I’m using Egypt as Remembrance Sunday isn’t observed there.

The analogy would only work if Dia de Los Muertos was a sad and solemn occasion, only concerned with loss and sorrow, the general futility of life, and the pain that often accompanies love.

Not all cultures think of death in the way it is often thought of in Britain.

The whole point of Dia de Los Muertos is that the dead are still with us in many ways. There is a lot of comfort and joy to it.

Cultural appropriation is not a thing.

It was academic theory adopted by the perpetually offended.

Quite correct. It was vaguely tolerated as a concept, but not widely adhered to or agreed to. I think we are all just quite sick of being lectured by the perpetually offended now, so it's in the bin, where really it should always have been.

Mexican who celebrates Dia De Los Muertos. You are massively over thinking this. To an embarrassing level.

When Cultural Appropriation was first raised, it made sense. It was to do with profiting from another’s culture & denying them any of the proceeds. It was Big Pharma taking indigenous remedies for disease & profiting freely. There is also the offence of trivialising ceremonies etc. Now it has become ‘every group must be shut into a little box with no interchange of ideas or mixing’. It’s grievance farming & chops humanity into tiny isolated chunks. 😱

What if it’s cultural appreciation? Clumsy, but not colonial greed?

Oh and in response to your "should I have a mini meltdown repeatedly in comment sections so everyone can laugh at me" I would strongly encourage you to do this, yes please do.

Comments help with the algorithm, so whereever you are seeing these posts you will boost them and others will see them too, and then they can mock you and boost the algo even more :)

Lots of people suggesting you shouldn’t feel offended, OP, by the appropriation of your culture by British people who don’t understand it - and have no interest in understanding. And even those challenging you on your cultural history and what your festivals signify. Or even the correct terminology!!

Shame people don’t hear you. You’re right, it never used to be a thing in the UK a few decades ago.

Btw, do not dare celebrate Hallowe'en. It's a Scottish/Irish celebration, existed from the 1800s, Rabbie Burns wrote a poem about it in 1785, when it was already a tradition, around the time America was founded, the celtic immigrants took the old celtic tradition with them.

To celebrate Samhain, or All Hallows Eve properly you must a) be Scottish or Irish and b) when you go to chap on the door you say "The sky is blue, the grass is green, are you daeing Hallowe'en?"

Then you "do a turn", tell a joke or do a little dance or sing a song or otherwise entertain. At that point you will receive sweeties or sometimes money.

You must use a turnip instead of a pumpkin to make your neepy candle.

Horrible cultural appropriation by English colonisers and those bloody Americans that they think they can just steal a celtic tradition and use it for themselves!

I mean, not at all obviously. Since there is no such thing as cultural appropriation and it's great when other cultures incorporate traditions and ceremonies in any way they see fit, since that's the entirely of human history and it will never stop, despite barking mad efforts to gatekeep.

Hope you don’t enjoy St Patrick’s Day OP

Oh, I shouldn't think there's any risk of that!

And Chinese new year.

When we hold events for all of these things we are creating a safe and inclusive place for those who want to celebrate. And educating people on other cultures.

Imagine being upset about it…

We always celebrate Chinese New Year at home, we are not Chinese, I don't know why specifically, it just speaks to us. We try to do it properly so that we have good luck all the next year.

As a society where is all the fun going? We are becoming more multi cultural so inevitably aspects of all cultures are going to become more prominent.

Critics say well you just take the attractive aspects of a culture and leave all the bad bits, well...why not.
