Mother of groom wearing cream?

Waasitwroong · Today 09:03

I went wedding dress shopping on Saturday and took my mum, my partner's mum and a bridesmaid.

We chose the dress and then partner's mum declared she would be wearing cream to the wedding.

I feel taken aback that she'd do this and upon reflection now feel that I need to change my own dress choice to something that makes more of a statement, compared to the more understated and timeless dress I have chosen.

No - wearing cream to someone else's wedding is inappropriate.
Yes - get over it.

I once saw at mother of groom wear a long white dress with pastel panels and a white fascinator. It was so vulgar. There are so many beautiful colours and outfits, why did she have to do this?! It is a bit ick. Like she wanted to be her son’s bride on some subliminal level. It is so impolite and attention seeking, ask her to change.

No!

I voted YABU because no one is going to mistake MIL to be for the bride. You do you and ignore what she’s wearing. She will no doubt accessorise with some colour an unless she’s a psychopath and plans to wear a wee veil too.

Are you worried that someone might mistake the mother of the groom for the bride? Your wedding dress IS the statement dress of the evening. What does it matter if she wears a cream coloured outfit?

Bit of both, it’s inappropriate of her to wear cream but you shouldn’t change your dress because of it.

MojoMoon · Today 09:09

No one is going to think the groom's mother is the bride.

Everyone will still be looking at you in the ceremony. You don't need to wear a statement dress out of fear no one will notice you.
Wear the dress you want.
Let your guests wear the outfits they want.

Literally none of your guests will remember the details of your outfit or your mother in laws outfit a few weeks later, let alone a year later.

It's just one day in your life. Not the only day.

Agree with this - can you ask to see the outfit? My MIL wore a beige/cream twin set but it had purple flowers all over it when I saw it. It was also a skirt/jacket so didn’t look anything like a wedding dress. Please, please don’t alter the dress that you love because of it - no one’s going to mistake her for a bride!!

NarnianQueen · Today 09:09

Pick the dress YOU love and don’t worry about your MIL, she is the ones who’s going to look like an attention-seeking loon

It's become very common now for MOB or MOG to wear cream , ivory, even white . Have a look online . But it's also common for the MOG to ask the bride what she would like her to wear in terms of colours . Let your fiance have a word with her , it's his mother . And remember that in your married life - make your DH deal with his people !

tardive · Today 09:10

Absolutely no need to change your dress.

But if you'd prefer her not to wear cream have you explained that to her?

BusyExpert · Today 09:11

Get over it

Branleuse · Today 09:12

She's the one that will get comments about it, not you.
I'd be tempted to wear a coloured wedding dress and then she can explain herself to people why she's dressed as a bride

SusieGIass · Today 09:12

Oh this old chestnut again?

Noone is going to mistake your MIL for the bride so stop worrying about it.

A more pertinent question is- how hot is she? Raquel Welch completely stole the show at her son's wedding and she wore black!

Wearing white, ivory or cream to a wedding is a very deliberate choice to wear a bridal colour. Your MIL will look like the spiteful attention seeking idiot she is. Ignore her, don't change your wedding dress because of her. Have your photographer tint her outfit pink in pics!

ajandjjmum · Today 09:20

I asked future DIL if she had specific colours she would like me to wear or avoid. She was easy about it, but I was a little surprised when she said 'obviously not white' - as if I'd be that ridiculous!

This.

I don't think you should 'get over it'. It's rude to wear white to a wedding everyone knows this. But wear what you love, don't let her make you change anything. She'll look like an idiot on the day frankly as everyone will feel sorry for you having such a pain of a mil.

PollyBell · Today 09:29

I just told everyone where what you were comfortable in, I really didn't care what colour

The wedding will still go ahead and I prssume people can work out who the bride is

godmum56 · Today 09:30

what next? what is allowable and what is not? what shade of cream? how far off cream do you have to go before it changes to beige or primrose and is allowed? FFS!

How true this is. I've been to so many weddings of people I care about but if you asked me now (10+ years later) what their dresses were like and what their MIL or even their own mothers wore, I couldn't tell you, not even for a million quid.

PetulaGordeno · Today 09:35

Everyone knows it’s impolite and to be quite frank if you are not the bride, really impractical.
Do not change your dress and do not less this upset you. She’s being an arsehole and it’s clear she couldn’t wait to tell you.
Oh, I’m wearing cream.
Make sure your own mum has someting fabulous to wear and concentrate on yourself.

ILoveKits · Today 09:35

She's a klutz. You aren't. People will not think you are dressed inappropropriately. I'd let her get on with it rather than cause a potential ruck.

Malasana · Today 09:36

She’s being rude. However don’t change the dress you want because your MIL has no manners. Wear the dress you love.
If I was at a wedding and saw the grooms mother in cream I’d know instantly the sort of person she is.
