Mother of groom wearing cream?

I went wedding dress shopping on Saturday and took my mum, my partner's mum and a bridesmaid.

We chose the dress and then partner's mum declared she would be wearing cream to the wedding.

I feel taken aback that she'd do this and upon reflection now feel that I need to change my own dress choice to something that makes more of a statement, compared to the more understated and timeless dress I have chosen.

No - wearing cream to someone else's wedding is inappropriate.
Yes - get over it.

Where whatever you want. It's your big day. She's being rude but I wouldn't say anything. She'll make a right fool of herself at the wedding. Leave her to it.

Sharing photos of your dress is beyond the pale and I would be tempted to change my dress because of that .. unless it was my dream dress.

My mil wore a suit (skirt, top and jacket) with gloves and topped it off with a top hat with veil over the front … all in ivory.

I think it was in retaliation because she wanted to wear the same colour as the bridesmaids and I wouldn’t tell her what colour the dresses would be. She would have told everyone and I wanted it to be a surprise on the day.

(She also told people when I became pregnant and we had asked her to wait until I was 3 months)

I wonder when it became a thing that it was a complete no no to wear white/cream to a wedding unless you’re the bride. My adult children were married 20 odd years ago and I don’t remember it being an edict then. Or were they maybe waiting to pounce if I said I wanted to wear cream 😆

It's been widely seen as a faux pas since the 1840s.

Some people have become a bit more relaxed about it over the last couple of decades, but a majority still consider it inappropriate.

Nobody should wear cream or white at a wedding except the bride.

I agree with this.
Nor would I discuss any details of the wedding with her again, and I would tell her why.

Just to note, I am speaking as a fairly recent MoG, so same relationship as the "MiL" in this thread.
