Mother of groom wearing cream?

Waasitwroong · Yesterday 09:03

I went wedding dress shopping on Saturday and took my mum, my partner's mum and a bridesmaid.

We chose the dress and then partner's mum declared she would be wearing cream to the wedding.

I feel taken aback that she'd do this and upon reflection now feel that I need to change my own dress choice to something that makes more of a statement, compared to the more understated and timeless dress I have chosen.

AIBU?
No - wearing cream to someone else's wedding is inappropriate.
Yes - get over it.

Is shunning someone or calling them unkind names for wearing cream at a wedding polite then?
Is that good etiquette?

Where have I done that?

exaltedwombat · Yesterday 18:16

YABU for caring. If anyone DOUS care, no one comes out of this looking bad except her. Let her dig her own hole.

I'd get your partner to talk to their mum and tell her that, no, she is NOT wearing cream to the wedding. Unless she's very thick, it's provocative and best and a deliberate insult at worst.

That. I'm astonished that so many posters seem to think it's not an issue.

But yes, surely her son/friends/partner/other kids/siblings should be telling her that it's just not done? It shouldn't have to be down to you.

Thanks all. Good to know that the general consensus is the way I see it and it is somewhat considered unacceptable to wear cream to someone else's wedding.

Good points about the boundary crossing as I am also aware she has shared images of myself in dresses I tried on, which I feel is crossing a boundary and very much a red flag too.

She really is a peach. Sharing photos of you trying them on?

Yes!

She's shared with her daughter and probably husband too. If she's shared with them then I guess her sister is also a contender for seeing the pictures too. I think that has actually upset me more.

I went to a wedding where mob and mog wore cream. It looked fantastic on the photos as it all looked coordinated

likelysuspect · Yesterday 18:38

Branleuse · Yesterday 09:12

She's the one that will get comments about it, not you.
I'd be tempted to wear a coloured wedding dress and then she can explain herself to people why she's dressed as a bride

People are going to ask her to explain herself are they? Really?

OP it really doesnt matter.

Don’t change your own dress.

If anyone pays any attention to her dress, they’ll be thinking she’s one of “those” mothers. (Unless it’s really a yellowy cream rather than a pale cream).

It’s nothing to do with being mistaken for the bride. It’s just a social etiquette thing, and ignoring it does say something whether the wearer wants it to or not.

I suppose if you were being picky you might also say that its social ettiquette not to wear white if is not your first wedding or god forbid you're not a virgin but thankfully we threw that old bullshit out years ago

Theres a reason why people hate weddings and its because of these nonsense made up rules that just give people an opportunity to be controlling and rigid.

No one cares, literally no one cares what people wear.

My mil wore an outlandish full length dress to my bil’s wedding, which was same colour as bridesmaid dresses & she just looked completely ridiculous & people were sniggering behind her back.

she may well be telling you to provoke a reaction & she what the outcome will be

say nothing & let her crack on Confused

NoPaintedPony · Yesterday 18:53

Please do everything to stop your mil wearing cream to your wedding.

I took my MIL to the first fitting of my wedding dress, as she didn’t have any daughters so wanted her to share a memory with just the two of us. Oh dear!

I went and put my dress on for the first time and came out of the changing room all chuffed but MIL had disappeared. We found her trying on an ivory, lace, floor length dress. My face must have been a picture. Even with me and the sales assistants trying to dissuade her, she bought it and wore it to our wedding.

It is still something that’s spoken about and she made herself a laughing stock.

This is my MIL at my wedding over 35 years ago. I hadn't known until the day what she was wearing (didn't have a good relationship with her). I was a bit taken aback when I saw her. I did notice lots of guests side eyeing her and whispering, so she made a fool of herself. One of her oldest family friends even made a comment to me about what was she thinking.

I'm sure you'll outshine her OP. Let her get on with it. People will likely judge her for it.

How could she?

It's literally impossible to tell who was marrying the young man from that photo...oh, wait.

Blueuggboots · Yesterday 18:58

Have a conversation with your new MIL NOW. Ask to see her outfit? Set the rules now.

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 19:10

If her sharing photos of you has made it even worse how do you feel about our dress? Is it definitely perfect?

I would personally go again without your future MIL and pick a different dress which she hadn’t seen and has not shared photos around.

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 19:11

Also once you have done that ask in advance to see a photo of her outfit to check it doesn’t clash with MOB. If it’s unacceptable, as we can assume it will be, ask her to change outfits.

loveyoutothemoon · Yesterday 19:13

DO NOT change your dress but have a word a word with your MIL, she's being unreasonable!

Kirschcherries · Yesterday 20:19

Yes!

She's shared with her daughter and probably husband too. If she's shared with them then I guess her sister is also a contender for seeing the pictures too. I think that has actually upset me more.

For that reason alone I would definitely be considering a different dress and making sure MIL doesn’t know or have photos.

tardive · Yesterday 20:32

I really hope some of these posts aren't true, about sniggering behind MOB/MOG's back, their being a laughing stock, disapproving looks, whispered comments, all this horrible mean-girl behaviour.

All this is so much worse than wearing cream!!

Why did you invite her ?

Surely by this stage in the relationship, you must know what she is like.

SquirrelGG · Yesterday 20:57

My MIL wore cream at my wedding, I wore a calf length cream dress and no veil. No-one mistook her for the bride. What does it matter? I can't be bothered with all these old fashioned, and frankly ridiculous, "rules".

QueenietheGreat · Yesterday 20:58

@Blueuggboots
I agree with you
Because it'll start off with the dress now
Then MIL will think she can rip roughshot through the marriage and constantly dictate/criticise
And not be checked for her actions in any way whatsoever.....

Sugargliderwombat · Yesterday 21:22

Id get your husband to tell her she will look a dick wearing cream. That's what my BIL had to do !

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoByAgain · Yesterday 21:30

My MIL, like me, wore a long white dress to my wedding. Sticks out in all the photos but only one of us looked good in it

GabriellaFaith · Yesterday 21:32

I think it's incredibly selfish to wear white or cream to a wedding. Attention seeking and weird. If that was my wedding I'd be a bridezilla and not have her in photos! I think you need to tell the engaged couple.

FlowerVases · Yesterday 21:54

Don't it's rude and too much.

RedSheep26 · Yesterday 21:58

So tacky of her. Of course nobody will mistake her for the bride, but everyone knows white and cream are reserved for the bride. Same as if she wore a veil, nobody would think she was a bride but everyone would think she was an attention-seeking freak.
