Is DH being unfair after I put DD back in nappies due to stomach bug?

DD is 3 years 7 months and potty trained a few weeks ago (a bit late I know but she was just a bit slow to get it!). Today she’s been ill with a stomach bug that I think she’s picked up from nursery. She still wears nappies at night, and after an accident in her night nappy this morning before we got ready for the day I decided it would be best if we put her back in them just to cover any accidents.

Fast forward to this evening and I’m glad we did because she didn’t make it to the toilet at all today. DH has just had a go at me saying that that was my fault and I’m undoing all our hard work training her. AIBU to to think he’s being completely unnecessary, and a couple of days aren’t going to set her back at all?

Why do you get to decide what’s an acceptable milestone? Who made you so special? My dd was trained ‘late’ by your standards (she was over 3) because after a few failed attempts earlier on, I would rather have waited until she was old enough to comprehend it better. She cracked it within a few days with no upset and very few accidents. I’d much prefer that approach and it doesn’t make me lazy. As long as kids are potty trained before school it’s nobody else’s business and i’m so sick of people being vile to each other on here just to make themselves appear superior.

The environmental damage of late training should be everyone's business. The cost of late training is loads in monetary terms. Overall its another facet to parents not stepping up and parenting.

Not sure who is being ridiculous really. Lazy parenting is what this is...

Well you are. Because her child is potty trained. So where is the issue? She hasn’t started school yet - the government support is designed to reduce the number of kids starting school without being potty trained. You are trying to stick the boot in and making yourself look very silly in the process.

Why would her home be covered in infectious diarrhoea?! Her DD may have an accident, she'll clean it up and take appropriate hygiene measures herself, she presumably can limit where DD is, in terms of mitigating the impact of accidents.

People lose their minds on here about catching bugs from their DC. Of course, it happens, but you can do your best to observe best hygiene practices and hopefully that'll be enough. It's a tummy bug not ebola.

Regardless, if you can prevent or reduce it by using pull ups temporarily then why wouldn’t you? I accept it could be confusing for the child but in the grand scheme of things it isn’t going to hinder her progress to the point where they are back at square one. She has already trained once, she will do it again. It’s a temporary solution that makes life easier for the op during a difficult time.

I’m not incontinent, why would I need pads? it was a one off bout of food poisoning, sounds like you’ve never had it but it’s not uncommon to lose control in severe cases - hope you don’t experience that 🤣 and I DID put my daughter in nappies when she had a stomach bug

Glad you are better. You mentioned that you wished you had a nappy. I was just letting you know that there are products out there for such scenarios.

roshi42 · Yesterday 17:12

Yes as I’ve just found they work better and we have less leaks. She doesn’t wake up anyway so it makes no difference if she’s in a normal nappy or a pull up it’s the the same thing at that point

I cannot with this thread. Just to back you up here OP, from someone who’s actually doing this right now rather than all the ‘in my day’-ers, my 2.5 year old also wears taped nappies at night. As you say, she doesn’t wake at all so it makes no difference if they’re taped or pull ups - and I also find that pull ups were less absorbent and led to more leaks. Although she is in fact dry overnight 9 times out of 10 - but she sleeps in my bed so I’m not risking it! She can have a nappy at night as long as she needs, who is it hurting? Who’s to know? And even at 2.5 she can take it off by herself to do her ‘big morning wee’ first thing when she gets up… literally no difference it being taped or pants.

What unfortunate timings for a tummy bug. I can see it both ways. Yes, it is a risk putting the nappy back on, but if it's reasonably bad diarrhea it could be upsetting for her anyway and lead to ongoing problems with constipation.
One day should be ok. If she asks the next day just say no, tummys better now and tell her there's no nappies left anyway.
Get the nappies out of the house. Put a mattress protector under her sheet and start night training.

You can't train at night. It's hormonal and developmental. My GS was still wearing pull ups for bed when he was 8 the doctor explained it was a combination of a small bladder, the hormones that suppress urine production at night not kicking in combined with sleeping heavily. If the triggers aren't there to wake you up when your bladder is full and you are a heavy sleeper you can't train children to be dry.

Ohthatsabitshit · 11/10/2026 22:19

Do you wear nappies when you have an upset stomach? If not then don’t make your child do so.

This.

Nappies are grim
They should be a last resort for babies & toddlers who lack physical maturity to control bladder/bowels, not something you resort to whenever its easier.

Also 3-4 years old most definitely is late to toilet train. It’s damaging to our ideas of parenting to attempt to normalise this late toilet training trend. In some European countries children are at school by this point and the normal range for toilet training is 2-2.5. Beyond that is considered late.

No its not too late

Thanks, I was just making a joke related to the nappy because that’s what this post is about, it wasn’t that deep

This thread sure is a revelation of why the government is rolling out a scheme to support potty training. OP should have been part of the pilot really.

She’s successfully been trained so don’t think I need any help thanks x

I'm with your DH on this.

Also if your DD is shitting diarrhea in the nappy, that's just grim.

Where’s she supposed to ‘shit it’, then?

But yours is 2.5! OPs child is 3 years 7 months. There is a HUGE difference between children that age. A child the age of the OPs should not be put back in nappies the first sign of a stomach bug. And she should be in pull ups overnight, not taped nappies. And it should be taken off first thing not festering for 12 hours! Can you imagine how uncomfortable that is?

There’s no difference between a pull up or taped nappy overnight though if the child is not waking up to pee!
You can’t train overnight, it’s hormonal and at 3 not being dry at night is not a problem at all.
Pull ups are more leaky so not great overnight.
At 3 years 7 months most children would be able to take off a taped nappy anyway.

OP when your DD is better I would start a new morning routine of straight to the bathroom, nappy off and on the toilet for a morning wee. It’s a good habit to get into.
When she is dry most mornings take the night nappy away and see how things go.

You won’t believe this, but it’s not me setting these childhood milestones 🙄😂😂 I don’t believe I’m special, just sensible. 😉
As long as kids are potty trained before school it’s nobody else’s business - and that’s the problem .. so many children aren’t, often due to lazy parenting, hence why the Government, not me, is rolling out a potty training scheme. 🤷‍♀️🙄

But that’s irrelevant here because the child is potty trained and isn’t yet at school age.

Your situation is completely different. I’m assuming yours is potty trained since they take themselves for a morning wee. OP isn’t evening doing that. She is changing the nappy after breakfast. She is lazy. Came on to ask if she was unreachable. And instead of admitting her husband was right just keeps harping on when in fact she is lazy.

Why does it matter if DD is happy and comfortable?

Because she's not trained if her morning wee is in the nappy. It's also pretty gross to wear a nappy any longer than needed.

Wow. Can’t argue with stupid. So I’m off to bed.

RafaistheKingofClay · Yesterday 22:36

Meh OP. Having nannied for a child who was unreliably continent at several years older than your DD due to medical issues I would have done the same with a stomach bug. It’s very different to a stomach bug in children who have been reliably trained for some time and considerably less grim than the alternative.

That child’s an adult now and not walking round in nappies so I’m sure it will be fine.
