If I could ban one type of thread from this website…

… It would be one's asking about trousers on flights.

Bearing in mind I've been on here over 20 years, Lived through all the baby pasta, the baby modelling threads and all that crap, that yet this one never dies.

I think it's more than even mother of a bride theme because more people are obsessed with what trousers to wear sitting down for a few hours.
What type of thread always makes you roll your eyes?

(Special points for people who say threats like the one we're on now, very good well done 😃)

OP posts:

There was one this morning asking why people on holiday, in Europe, eat cornflakes for breakfast?

EppingIsFun · Today 19:51

The 'should I go to A&E?' posts. They often come across as dramatic and attention seeking with an undertone of 'oh my leg is hanging off but I couldn't POSSIBLY trouble the emergency dept because it is for actual emergencies'. Then they are always full of replies shrieking A&E NOW (for minor issues) or people saying they would stay at home with their practically comatose child.

Who tf seeks medical advice from a load of unqualified strangers on mumsnet?!

That's still going. It's got a little....odd..

... plus, it's the perimenopause...

If I never hear the words peri or perimenopause again it’ll still be too soon. Everyone and their dog seems to have it. I appreciate some do suffer, but on MN it seems you’re no one unless you’ve been suffering from it since the age of 12.

Pluto46 · Today 19:44

But generally they are not racist at all and its just certain posters determined to twist and distort the most innocuous of posts ...... e.g. OP starts a light hearted thread about how to serve toast (there was one earlier) and states they prefer Robertsons Marmalade to Tiptree.....cue any number of enraged posters deciding the OP must be a despicable, hateful racist

I'm talking about posts which are actually racist, of which there are many.

Are you trying to minimise the racism that is on the site?

I know. It's a miracle that anyone employs women at all.

No, I was saying some posters want to shoe horn racism into the most light hearted threads and, frankly, I rest my case !

WhatATimeToBeAlive · Today 19:59

What to name their baby. I mean, really.

Lumpyteats · Today 20:01

Peri.
Peri, peri, peri.

I'm 32 and have a rash, could it be peri?
Peri and need a dress for a wedding!
Ideas for a peri city break?

Now. Flight trousers? As a super long haul flyer and minimalist packer, I've got you covered and will contribute enthusiastically to any such thread.

People get so rude though!
"Belinda is an old woman in curlers who argues in the street, don't call her that"

I both love and hate the ones about accents that descend into squabbles because it turns out you can’t reliably explain the pronunciation of a word by saying it rhymes with another word. Because … accents.

That poor woman on another thread who is in agony and can hardly sit or stand.."it's peri"
She's 32 .

Anything where the OP simply won’t accept the advice 999 posts have given her and instead clings to the 1 post that agrees with her

That was the case with the woman whose 10 year old son was being bullied on WhatsApp.

  • he shouldn't have a smartphone
  • he certainly shouldn't have access to WhatsApp
X 100. She wouldn't have it.

But what was the significance of any of that to my post?

The OP asked which threads we would like to ban. I said the racist ones.

So why did you feel the need to quote my post and talk about threads that you don't consider to be racist?

Are you trying to claim that there are no racist threads on MN? Or do you not agree that racist threads should be banned?

Do feel free to explain what you were trying to achieve by this. I can't really see any reason for posting what you wrote, other than to try to minimise the existence of racism on MN.

And I too rest my case. Hmm

All the transphobic ones, including those where the underlying message is one of transphobia but the OP is pretending otherwise.

Edited

You should report those to MNHQ.

Ones where people end up getting in separate arguments about a different topic in a thread

And totally derail it and ruin it because they’re determined to be right. Very annoying.

Not a thread, but posts where people talk about how they wish they could speak to their mum/dad one last time after reading that someone has lost a parent and isn’t grieving. Not everyone is the same or has the same type of relationship with their parent/s.

Charlize43 · Today 20:07

The 'blindsided' (some even being 'blind sighted) ones... always seem so over dramatic. Must be the current in word for drama queens.

RafaFan · Today 20:09

Not a type of post, but a type of poster...the ones, not usually the OP, who get over-invested in a thread and become the self-appointed expert on whatever the topic is, shouting down everyone else and repeating the same point over and over.

Beachtastic · Today 20:10

Never really thought about it, but reading through the posts... I really hate the grammar/spelling police. Maybe because I work as an editor, I get all the smug red pen stuff out of the way and can tolerate the fact that not everyone is a punctutation fetishist or brilliant at expressing themselves in writing... I hate seeing people mocked for this.

Also dislike the hygienists shaming people who allow their husbands to fart, or who fail to scour themselves in boiling bleach daily or change their clothing/bedding every 5 minutes. Jeez, I grew up in the 70s, I think we had a bath once a week and no one died.

I saw an odd thread recently where someone was struggling with not wanting to wear lipstick. I didn't really read it all properly but the gist of it seemed to be that she didn't like putting it on, but felt she should, and the replies were urging her to conquer her fear. I mean whyyyyyyyyyyyy?????

Threads where someone has obviously been cowed into a distorted sense of reality and people tell her to get some self-respect. As though self-respect grows on trees.
