Colin is not a birthday cake

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

YABU Colin is the gold standard shop bought cake

YANBU Colin is an any time of year cake

I had a M&S fruit cake with marzipan and icing growing up. I love fruit cakes and I especially love marzipan.

EndofDaze · Yesterday 13:32

Colin is the only acceptable birthday cake in CasaDaze. Every birthday for every family member.

MsSquiz · Yesterday 13:33

During lockdown, we had a Colin once a month as a treat!
DH had the extra large Colin for his 30th
DD wants the arctic Colin for her birthday cake in December
Every Christmas food order from M&S we get the festive Colin and we regularly buy the mini Colin or Connie cakes for the kids

big fans of Colin here, but not of any of the other Caterpillar versions

Colin is so birthdayish, I love taking off his big thick chocolate face and scoffing it.

For little kids. At 24?
I wouldn't expect my cake to have the words happy birthday on it. You can always put candles if you want to make it clear.

What is the age cut off for a Colin? I’m late 40s and would love a Colin (Firth or cake) for my birthday!

GFBurger · Yesterday 13:36

The most wonderful thing here is finding out I can buy a Colin any day I want! Hadn’t even considered he could be anything but a birthday cake.

Tryagain26 · Yesterday 13:38

Colin is definitely a birthday cake and a very nice one too. When else would you get one?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Yesterday 13:40

I bought a couple of yellow stickered Colins for Scout Camp a few years ago. No one’s birthday. They lived them.

ByRoseBiscuit · Yesterday 13:42

We are another household that loves a caterpillar cake for birthdays, more yummy than loads of the other supermarket birthday cakes!

JuliaAgrippina · Yesterday 13:43

We've had it for birthdays - but Sainsbury’s is best bet for a range of actual birthday cakes though not all have happy birthday on them. I assume so they can sell them for a range of occaions.

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · Yesterday 13:44

Don’t diss Colin! He’s lovely. A perfect birthday cake.

Those caterpillars are drier than the Sahara! No idea why anyone eats them, ever.

I have always found then Colin cake very moist, not dry at all

snoopyfanaccountant · Yesterday 13:44

You beat me to it. DD had one of these and a giant Connie as has wedding cake.

Of course he would, it's His birthday after all! My two when they were quite small always sang Happy birthday dear Jesus at Christmas morning breakfast.

BurntBroccoli · Yesterday 13:48

Colin cakes are THE best Birthday cakes, second only to homemade.

He looks fab with candles!

I find it a bit weird for adults to even have a birthday cake, unless it’s a milestone birthday. However, if someone insisted on buying me one, I’d be perfectly happy with a Colin. It’s a nice cake, a crowd pleaser and very easy to portion.

My best friend died when we were 45/46. I’ve celebrated every subsequent birthday for the joy of still being alive. Often with a Colin cake.

Sorry but this entirely wrong. His bum is actually the best bit 😂😂

You are the second person to say this. I don't think I can bring myself to buy a full one to test this claim.

Can you eat his bum on the mini rolls?

I haven’t had a birthday cake since I was a child. Am I the only one?

Aaah everyone gets a cake for every birthday in our house!

I find it very weird that adults celebrate birthdays like children, as if they're a big thing. An adult expecting a big fuss on their birthday, bizarre. Like American adults drinking out of straws.

Do you struggle to find enjoyment in your life? Being an adult doesn't mean you have to be boring.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · Yesterday 13:52

Do you actually have cake regularly on non-birthday occasions though? If you buy colin regularly then yanbu but in our house we only have cake if it's someone's birthday or if it's Christmas so colin is fine.

TheKeatingFive · Yesterday 13:52

It certainly is in my house

CoastalCalm · Yesterday 13:52

I’m a freak that doesn’t like Colin cake at all so agree with you

Ah that's nice, you're a charmer I'll say that 😘

TeenLifeMum · Yesterday 13:53

We’ve only ever had Colin for birthdays - I usually make a cake but sometimes there’s two events so Colin comes out for one and I make one for the other.
