Colin is not a birthday cake

BeMintFatball · Yesterday 11:52

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

YABU Colin is the gold standard shop bought cake

YANBU Colin is an any time of year cake

I haven’t had a birthday cake since I was a child. Am I the only one?

Er, yes? I've had one every year and I'm 46.

I'm very worried about all the people who seem to think that a Colin cake is the bees knees. Have they never tasted any other cake? It's honestly one of the worst quality cakes I've come across, as far as supermarket cakes go. It all seems a bit Emperor's new clothes to me.

It's a matter of personal taste. I'm not keen on M&S chocolate, prefer Aldi, but I love Colin. I don't buy it anymore because we aren't really cake eaters and the children in the family get cupcakes to give out at parties. I like hand made cakes, would rather have cheesecake. But it doesn't stop me craving a Colin cake. I also cook from raw ingredients, all non English recipes, but have to stop myself buying a pound bakery traditional pasty, when shopping.

I'd be willing to bet that most sales of a Colin cake are for birthdays. To me it would be more odd (although still perfectly reasonable) to just buy a Colin cake to eat on a random day.

I don't think many 'birthday' cakes have 'happy birthday' on them? If we have to define a 'birthday' cake I'd say it's a cake with candles.

I highly doubt Colin was the only option.

Edited as published too soon.

I think Colin and the new cake will do just fine. But OP, I feel your pain, he had one job. Weaponised Incompetence of the highest order. I would say when it’s his birthday get him a Thomas one but he’d probably like that and it would perpetuate the infantile behaviour.

Would your daughter have liked it is surely all that matters?

Is it not possible to put "Happy Birthday" on Colin?

Italiangoddess200 · Yesterday 13:10

She's 24 or 4?

AlwayAnxious · Yesterday 13:11

I reckon she would of loved it

VastMeridian · Yesterday 13:12

Colin can be an all year round cake ONLY in the sense that he makes special appearances at other festivals. Day of the Dead Colin from a couple of years ago was sensational.

I'm a cook and can make far better cake and very often do, but I still love Colin.

I hope the Sainsbury's cake lives up to your expectations, I always find they look nice, but are very dry. At least with a Colin, you know it'll taste good!

Lipstone · Yesterday 13:17

I would never eat a Colin unless I was being polite at someone's birthday (a child's)

Makebelieveanotherlife · Yesterday 13:18

I think it looks silly for a 24yo but seems like I’m in the minority here. If she would like that then gets it, but it really shouts can’t be bothered last minute effort.

Same.

Where I used to work our boss would present every co-worker with a Colin the Caterpillar cake on their birthday. The lucky birthday boy/girl would be given first dibs of the face. It became such a tradition that we all looked forward to it. We were all ages, young and old.

I personally like the cake more than any other off the shelf cakes and still get them for our kids even though they are young adults.

Love Colin. 100% birthday winner cake! Bangs gavel. 🥳🥳🥳🥳

Fivebyfive2 · Yesterday 13:25

MN is so weirdly obsessed with Colin. I think it's too dry and there's no way it would be my pick, especially for an adults birthday.

Agreed

My husband only has caterpillar cakes for his birthday. Years ago I thought I would try and make one...I haven't attempted since, that's how much of a disaster it was. Still edible but very much not a caterpillar (unless it was one that had been badly run over!)

It's my 51st and my daughter's 23rd birthdays tomorrow.
I can't wait to see the cake DH has chosen for us both. 😍

I find it very weird that adults celebrate birthdays like children, as if they're a big thing. An adult expecting a big fuss on their birthday, bizarre. Like American adults drinking out of straws.

Great strategy, I like it

It can be either but Colin is overrated. Only his face is worth eating.

Sorry but this entirely wrong. His bum is actually the best bit 😂😂

Oh I gave up celebrating a long time ago.
Tomorrow will just be a nice cosy day for me and my daughter (joint birthday and both adults).

My daughter and her husband had Colin the caterpillar as their wedding cake. They do big versions!
