Colin is not a birthday cake

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

Our kids are a similar age and are most disappointed if there isn’t a Colin provided - on the eldest 21st we had a spectacular cake made, but they also had a Colin as its tradition here!

We're going away for my daughter's birthday so I bought these from M&S.

same! We might have colin on the birthday and then a lovely cake at the party.

It's entirely irrelevant if you find Colin dry and bland.

The question is not "is Colin a good cake?", it's "is Colin a birthday cake?"

Yes, Colin on a birthday is a birthday cake.

Any cake that's used to celebrate a birthday is a birthday cake.

For little kids. At 24?
I wouldn't expect my cake to have the words happy birthday on it. You can always put candles if you want to make it clear.

I'm 40 and I'd love a Colin for my birthday cake!

StuNur85 · Yesterday 12:34

It's the only cake my 21 year old asks for every year. Usually a Connie not a Colin.

"Colin is an any time of year cake" is possibly the most unreasonable thing I've ever read on mumsnet. Are you tucking into a Colin on a random Tuesday?? I must know!

I had mini Colins for my hen night.

They are bloody lovely 😋

I guess its all down to what the first of honour would like.

Straight from M&S website
"COLIN THE CATERPILLAR
Our Colin the Caterpillar is a British icon who’s been making birthdays magical since 1990"

beautifuldaytosavelives · Yesterday 12:35

I don’t think he’s a birthday cake either

Heretic!! 😆

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Yesterday 12:37

Any cake can be a birthday cake if you stick some candles in it. That is the law.

CharlieEffie · Yesterday 12:37

Most definitely a birthday cake. Both my daughters have had it for 1st birthday and i requested it for my 18th

ZanyMaker · Yesterday 12:38

Unpopular opinion alert - Colin is overrated!! I’d be disappointed with a glorified Swiss roll for my birthday.

AIiswatchingyou · Yesterday 12:40

If you give someone else a job because you don't want to do it, don't complain how they do it.

Colin is probably one of the most bought birthday cakes in the country (and his compatriots Cuthbert, Curly, Clyde et al.)

PyrexCup · Yesterday 12:40

The caterpillar cake from Aldi is tasty and if someone got that for me, in middle age, for my birthday, and stuck a few sparklers and candles in it, I'd be delighted.

I'm a good baker but if time is short, I'd get Colin. Failing that, a large boxed cake from Asda. But not the machine print out ones, they're crap. Just the green boxed ones.

FancyKitten · Yesterday 12:41

There’s loads of birthday cakes in M&S.
We bought one yesterday, it’s lovely!

He just didn’t look… DH does this “they had no bread, milk, baked beans, bog roll etc…”

Colin, I’ve eaten on many occasions. I like the themed ones. But I’d prefer a proper cake.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · Yesterday 12:41

Colin is absolutely a birthday cake. I have one every year.
(Birthday person gets the head in our family.)

Personally im not a fan of the colin cake but I've seen plenty of people have it for their birthday cake, candles and all.

I'd much rather have a Victoria sponge.

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 12:43

I resorted to a Colin being delivered last year, we’ve not had a Colin cake before so was a nice change.

Yetone · Yesterday 12:43

Colin is most definitely a birthday cake.
Did you know that you can order a large personalised one that serves 40 from M and S? It does cost £50 but comes on a board with your personalised message.

ExtraOnions · Yesterday 12:43

Back in the 70s, all I wanted was a “Dougal” birthday cake … it was like Colin with long hair. My friend had one, and I never did … I would love a Colin Birthday Cake to make up for it.

For DDs 18th, we had a massive Colin Cake

PistachioTiramisu · Yesterday 12:43

I don't get the love for Colin anything! I find the cake too dry, too chocolatey and too many bits and pieces stuck on the icing! Plus, it contains rapeseed oil - poison!

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 12:43

Oh and btw our cakes rarely say happy birthday. We sing it and have candles doesn’t need to be written on the cake.
