Facebook holiday bores.

What do you think of people who are suffering from main character syndrome when they are on holiday.
The everyday updates on what they are doing and 53 photos. 53.

Taking the phone in the sea and doing a selfie so we can see what they look like in the sea.

It's like some people can't relax anymore unless they are broadcasting every day for validation.

Why do they assume everyone is interested in every move they make?
Can't they enjoy their holidays without posting 53 pictures every day? How can they enjoy when they are thinking of the next FB post?

You really have to ask the question why?
Why do they think they are so important that people want to see their daily lives?

No, they don't think that their pictures are important to YOU personally. But all of these people have other people in their lives for whom the pictures will be important. My mum posted 70 pictures from her holiday the other day. She lives abroad, I won't see her till next year and I love seeing what they were up to when they went away and beautiful places they saw.
And most of my family would feel the same way about my pictures if I ever bothered to post on FB. But even thought I don't post, I still take pictures and a lot of them. This is something we always did as a family and had mountains of negatives, prints that my grandfather developed himself in a dark room he set up in our basement and slides. He bought his first digital camera as soon as they became available. It was a clunky odd thing with terrible photo quality but we continued to take thousands of pictures a year as a family. I am not going to give up the tradition that's been in our family for generations because a random acquaintance on FB feels that I am not doing my holiday right.

ETA: shock horror but one of my favourite pictures of my mum is her as a 19-year-old.. standing in the sea!!!

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 08/10/2026 13:29

I think they can do whatever they like on their social media and if other people don’t like it, they don’t have to follow them. Nobody’s forcing you to look at their posts.

I love seeing my friends’ holiday pictures. I like travel and I’m interested in my friends’ lives 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes someone showed me how to do this a few years back when I said I mainly used it as an album!

I don’t post anything til I’m back from holiday these days - just one succinct post about the holiday as a whole

👍 not to mention they are advertising the fact their house is empty.

I think you need to unfriend this person

They don’t assume everyone is interested. They’re simply using social media for its intended purpose. They’re fully aware that not everyone will be interested and will assume, correctly, that anyone who isn’t interested can simply scroll past.

It’s amazing that you apparently think your friends should tailor their social media to your preferences. I don’t think it’s your friend who has main character syndrome here.

I really don’t understand why so many people are so bitter about other people’s social media activity. If you don’t like seeing updates, don’t follow them. Or don’t use social media at all. Going on Facebook and then moaning about people using it for the exact purpose it was designed for, when you’re under zero obligation to engage with it, is just weird. Do you also sit and watch programmes you can’t stand on telly every week and then write to the BBC to complain about not liking them?

Only if they are so daft they give their address on FB and/or their friends are criminals. 🙄

Couldn't have put it better myself 👍

Unless they also share their postal address on Facebook, this isn’t going to be a problem.

Who do you think is going to burgle them? Their old school friends from sixth form? Their mum?

WhyArePiratesCalledPirates · 08/10/2026 13:43

I take a millions selfies and hundreds of food and drink pics
I even chuck in the odd scenic view.
I post them all!
People can scroll past
It amuses me.
Harms no one.

I am the main character in my life.

Im not at all sorry.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 08/10/2026 13:43

I think people can use their FB page for whatever they want to (as long as it's not illegal/immoral etc). It's up to you whether you choose to follow them or not. I like people's holiday photos in general but if someone is posting more than I want to see, I just temporarily unfollow them.

Edited

Yeah, my grandparents and parents were always really into taking photos and had stacks and stacks of photo albums. I’m so, so pleased they did. I was going through my mum’s with her last year when my dad died and there were so many lovely, happy pics of good times.

My favourite photo of me and my dad is one my mum took of us on holiday when I was seven or eight. We’re standing on a cliff with binoculars and he’s got his arm round me and is pointing out a bird 😍

TheCoolHare · 08/10/2026 13:51

Just bin Facebook. I've never looked back since getting rid of it.

The last straw for me was when I went on the home page and the first three post were nothing any of my friends had posted but ads, groups I hadn't signed up for and provocative clickbait from a media outlet.

Honestly, it is a platform that is so far removed from what it originally was, it's not worth keeping anymore.

A lot of people don't post many, though. The ones who post lots? In a few cases, some of them actually take really nice photos and can inspire you to think of visiting the place. And, if we were older, apparently people used to go round to friends' houses after a holiday, and physically make them watch slides, so at least this way you don't have that!
I suppose pretty much all social media could be seen as showing off/oversharing. And no doubt previous generations would say I'm wasting time right now.

BigBadPotato · 08/10/2026 14:08

DearlyDiego · 08/10/2026 12:36

People are the main characters of their own lives. It's reasonable for them to put posts on their social media, of their life.

If people using social media for its intended purpose is so galling to you, I suggest you delete all the apps and do something far more cultured with your time.

👆 you don’t have tos scroll through their 53 photos, no one’s forcing you to. Let people live how they want to 🤷‍♀️

Chilly80 · 08/10/2026 14:09

I like looking at peoples holiday photos

KaySam · 08/10/2026 14:10

Someone I know posts so many pictures while they are away it feels like I am with them.
so now when I see that airport picture with the pint I unfollow them until they’re back.
im not interested in the 200 pictures.

SeaGlassDreamer · 08/10/2026 14:12

I love travel and I love seeing peoples holiday photos providing they are showing the highlights not just downloading the contents of their photo gallery with boring duplicate shots.

saraclara · 08/10/2026 14:12

The main character here seems to be you, @Netcurtainnelly . As you seem to think that your Facebook friends should only post things that interest you. Never mind their grandma who likes to see their photos and know that they're happy and safe, or their friend who suggested that they go to this location, and will be pleased to see how well it's going. Or even just random friends who actually like to see their photos.

Nope, they might have 100 friends, but only you count.

DiNozzoComingBack · 08/10/2026 14:16

I love a facebook holiday post, but 52 in one album does seem excessive. But I think that's because people don't bother to curate. It's like when your kid goes to a party at local softplay or whatever and the whatsapp group them blows up because the mum host sends her entire camera reel and now I have 103 photos of random children on my phone. Send me the group pic during the meal! Grin

But even the 52 facebook posts is fine - I can scroll past.

myopinionis · 08/10/2026 14:18

Uh? That's the point of facebook. Politics posts and adverts are the shit bits; photos from my friends are the core.

I keep a fairly tight friend list. If somebody on it's enjoying themselves, that's good. Even the slightly annoying ones.

pinkishtongue · 08/10/2026 14:22

I wouldn’t put that many on, but I upload my holiday pics so I get them coming up as fb memories. I do them for myself, I don’t give a shiny shit who looks at them.

Dumbledora8 · 08/10/2026 14:34

It's not about you OP

boredsmored · 08/10/2026 14:38

And equally you can unfollow. I’ll post what photos I like on my Facebook thanks. If people don’t like it, tough.

You don't have to look at them. Give them a Like if you want or just ignore and scroll on.
