Altercation in carpark

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 13:30

I was in a supermarket carpark, I had put my baby in her carseat and had just loaded my groceries in the boot. A car parked in the parent and child space next to me and an older couple got out, early 70s I would guess, able bodied, no kids with them
I said "sorry do you realise thats s parent and child space" and I pointed to the markings.
Well his response was very rude in tone "I came here to do my shopping, not to dance around" ?? "It should be first come first served " and they stormed off. I was a bit taken aback, I said loudly but they were a bit away at this point so not sure if they heard me "god id hate to be so ignorant". I took a picture of their car. Not really sure what I was going to do with it, thinking I would think about it and perhaps report to management. I got into my car
The next he was at my window "you took a photo, its illeageal to take photos of other people's property, delete it." I ensured my doors were locked, he stood behind my car so I couldn't reverse out, she was at my windscreen taking photos of me. Eventually they moved and I got out.
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything but there were loads of other places they could have parked but the parent and child spaces are limited. Its very frustrating when I've all my kids and can't find a free parent and child space because people like this who dont need them take them and they don't give a shit

The parent and child spaces were full
The disabled spaces were not full.
The regular spaces were not full

They obviously couldn’t park in the disabled spaces without a blue badge. Parents could park in the normal empty spaces that were not full. You still put yourself and your child as risk because you were annoyed, not to help a non existent strange that could have parked elsewhere.

Deliberately missing the point. The point is that a private establishment can make their own rules as a condition of entry. And it is a pity more managers don't enforce this.

A private establishment has no control over how spaces in a public car park are used. Once more, P&C spaces are a concession. You cannot be fined for parking in them without children, councils cannot enforce charges because there is no law prescribing a fine, and no viable business is going to risk losing customers by getting involved in something that has no legal standing. In certain circumstances if you are in a private car park you can attract a parking charge for parking in a P&C space but there has to be clear signage that the normal rules don’t apply.

YorkiePud25 · 05/10/2026 17:00

Typical entitled pensioners (and always men) thinking that they can try and bully anyone that dares to challenge them. The "didn't have them back in my day" argument drives me mad - they also didn't have seat belts and could rape/beat their wives without consequence.

We were taught to respect elders, but also respect works two ways. We had an old woman get in my then 2 year olds face in a co-op and tell her santa wouldn't be visiting her because she was crying over being told no to chocolate. I was so stunned I didn't get chance to respond.

FFS how did the human race evolve into not being able to go shopping without a Parent and Child space. Just let it go OP

Edited

No idea but parents lose their minds over their “special” parking space.

I cannot see any problem with a couple in their 70s using one and I definitely cannot imagine confronting them for doing so 🙄
A parent doesn’t NEED a dedicated parking space and I’d much rather see them go to those who do, such as disabled and/or seniors

I would share the pic and shame them locally ! How dare he threaten you and preventing you from leaving ? Self entitled twats

Post a picture of them and their car complete with regno and your version of events.

Then write.a post on whichever MN board entitled "Help! I'm bring sued for libel"

Sorry? I’m in a wheelchair or im using two crutches. I am awaiting a new knee and two new hips. I also have plates and pins aplenty in my lower leg and I’ve had surgery on my back. I take longtec and shorttec, gabapentin and tons of other pain relief.

Im not able bodied. Far from it.

so why are you quoting me.

I hope things improve. But this isn't a debate about you. Its about able bodied people using these spaces.

These threads always go

Person A) I don't think an able bodies person should use a P&C space.

B) They are a courtesy not the law, I park in them all the time and i'd have told you to f-off!

C) I have a bad knee, I use them when my knee hurts

D) I am insert disability and I use them when the disabled spaces are taken.

E) Yes D) i think that is fair, but this isn't about yout, its about able bodied people abusing a courtesy, but B), is an arse.

F) I have insert severe disability, do you just want me to die? You ablest scumbag!!! Screw anyone else who might need any help, no one can possible need as much help as me!!!

Loveofeclairs · 05/10/2026 17:01

I’m with you OP. If they need a wider space they should apply for a blue badge. But their reaction clearly shows that they’re just entitled cunts.

nomas · 05/10/2026 17:01

EscCtrl · 05/10/2026 16:56

If the elderly couple had disabilities then would they not have said so, and won the argument? And hopefully gotten an apology? The elderly couple didn't make that case in a prolonged argument. That inclines me to think they probably weren't disabled.

Why do people have to prove their credentials to the OP? Is she the car park police?

I agree with you. People blame COVID or the cost of living for increasing wanky and entitled behaviour but people are just pricks. They park on those spaces to be entitled dicks and then bask in their cunning act of rebellion. Hopefully one day someone getting their baby or infant of their car in a smaller bay bangs their car with the door and damages it. Karma and all that.

Nothing to brag about. It's twatty behaviour really. You and your mum can use plenty of other spaces.

You’re not even interested in why Megifer and her mum need a bigger bay?

Can you not think why?

Did the Be Kind movement pass you by?

Yea but theres less chance of her having one if her famous falls, so P&C space it is if theres one free.

If theres plenty of spaces then the parent can park there too. Ive had kids and had to park in a normal space and walk a bit further, its way harder getting a 16 stone 74 year old in and out of a car and into the shop.

Everanewbie · 05/10/2026 16:42

A good, fair minded store manager would see a courtesy she/he extended to help people, abused, would politely request that said customer move their car and respect the their wishes, or inform them that their custom is no longer welcome. That is within their charge if they had the moral fibre to address it.

@Everanewbie
OK let's work through this.
2 customers have an argument in a car park over where to park. There will be accusations on both sides.
The store manager or staff won't be witnesses to what happened. It could be that the accuser (OP) might have been really bloody rude.
Banning the people who are LEGALLY allowed to park in that spot might be justifiably pissed off with accuser.
It's a case of 'she said / he said'
To investigate this fully, they would need to look at the CCTV - this could take at least 15 minutes.
Now times that by 20, 50, 70+ instances a day. Store managers just do not have time to deal with this kind of shit.

A good fair minded store manager, if it gets to him or her, will politely ask them to park in a 'normal' parking spot next time.
Most instances will not escalate to this though. Just a lot of passive aggressive stares &/or mutterings in the car park

SEMREHLover · 05/10/2026 17:03

If being 70 they have a blue badge for some reason then they can park anywhere… annoying and selfish, but maybe a factor.

I said that in my original post i didnt add it on after, as thatnis what happened! I hadnt intended them to actually see me taking the photo. They may not have even been 70 FFS I was estimating, in my experience most 70 year old nowadays are very active and capable. This thread seems very ageist to me, suggesting that someone of 70 needs to be frail and incapable!!

This thread seems very ageist to me

Fucks sake 😂you started it. Why not tell us what their skin colour and sexual orientation was, they'd be about as relevant. Also, if you're going to use the word broached, at least check it's meaning and usage.

I suppose you are right if the store didn't own/manage the carpark. But if they did they'd be well within their rights.

SparklingTurquoiseOcean · 05/10/2026 17:04

Be a different story if there were parking spaces for pensioners and a mum as baby used it, oh imagine the outrage.

KaleidoscopeSmile · 05/10/2026 16:22

Well that's a rookie fucking mistake isn't it. Have you not heard of invisible disabilities?

Why the fucking hell do you need a wider space if your disability isn't physical
