Altercation in carpark

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 13:30

I was in a supermarket carpark, I had put my baby in her carseat and had just loaded my groceries in the boot. A car parked in the parent and child space next to me and an older couple got out, early 70s I would guess, able bodied, no kids with them
I said "sorry do you realise thats s parent and child space" and I pointed to the markings.
Well his response was very rude in tone "I came here to do my shopping, not to dance around" ?? "It should be first come first served " and they stormed off. I was a bit taken aback, I said loudly but they were a bit away at this point so not sure if they heard me "god id hate to be so ignorant". I took a picture of their car. Not really sure what I was going to do with it, thinking I would think about it and perhaps report to management. I got into my car
The next he was at my window "you took a photo, its illeageal to take photos of other people's property, delete it." I ensured my doors were locked, he stood behind my car so I couldn't reverse out, she was at my windscreen taking photos of me. Eventually they moved and I got out.
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything but there were loads of other places they could have parked but the parent and child spaces are limited. Its very frustrating when I've all my kids and can't find a free parent and child space because people like this who dont need them take them and they don't give a shit

You're not the parking police so if you can't cope with some pushback, keep your beak out.

Everyone’s a cunt these days

You are right, people are definitely more cuntish than they used to be, in public at least.

Morals. Right.

Deliberately missing the point. The point is that a private establishment can make their own rules as a condition of entry. And it is a pity more managers don't enforce this.

OP has made herself judge and jury of all parkers.

OP, are you the one that parked up next to the woman and her disabled husband so that the driver could not access her vehicle a few weeks ago?

No

Oh dear.

I am entitled to a reasonable adjustment. Under law.

I’d say using a P&C space whilst waiting for a BB is reasonable, given the circumstances of both parties, wouldn't you?

This. ^ Anyone who stops someone with a blue badge using a parent and child space (if there are no disabled zones left) is a disgrace.

I saw one entitled little madam (mid 30s I would say) having a go at an elderly couple in a parent and child space some months ago, (they had a blue badge and there were no disabled spaces.) There were 20-odd empty parent and child spaces! She could have used one of them, she just wanted to have a pop at them.

The man (who was about 75) told her to fuck off and walked off.

I almost fell over laughing! 😆

I'm not sorry. 😂

@Icecreamsundaz Thread didn't go quite as you hoped did it?! 😬

!

So fucking boring when people throw out the old ‘in my day’.

Ok we didn’t have them. So what?
We do now.
Just makes life a little easier for parents.

If you don’t need them, don’t use them.
What’s so difficult?

Not difficult to leave an elderly couple alone either.

Everanewbie · 05/10/2026 16:50

That is the other part of these threads I'd forgotten OP, the disability top trumps we get to see play out. Hard to believe, but this isn't about you, it is about otherwise able bodies entitled people abusing a courtesy then getting uppity when their ignorance is pointed out to them.

Sorry? I’m in a wheelchair or im using two crutches. I am awaiting a new knee and two new hips. I also have plates and pins aplenty in my lower leg and I’ve had surgery on my back. I take longtec and shorttec, gabapentin and tons of other pain relief.

Im not able bodied. Far from it.

so why are you quoting me.

Unfortunately thats the world is becoming, worry about yourself.
What about helping others? And yea I had a space but yhe next parent who arrived wouldn't have had. What about them? Why has everyone become so selfish??

You helped no one and in fact caused distress for others.

Typically when someone focuses on things like this they have some other larger problem they are avoiding.

Lilylakeside · 05/10/2026 16:50

With great difficulty.

My dc are now adults but I distinctly recall having to climb through the back of my car when one was a little baby because the two cars on either side of mine had parked so closely I couldn't get any doors open wide enough to get him in safetly. Good bloody job I was fit and slim at the time.

Parent and child spaces are there for a reason just as disabled spaces are, they were born out of necessity.

Yep. Wheelchair user here. I had exactly the same problem in standard spaces. Obviously I can’t climb through the back and on the occasions I’ve gone back into the shop to ask for a tannoy announcement, I’ve been made to feel I’m the one at fault. Like I said, some people are just twats.

You obviously weren’t going to free up a space for anyone by confronting strangers with your baby, this was about your own annoyance. As you said the car park wasn’t full either. You acted out of annoyance without considering the potential risk to yourself or your child, that wasn’t a selfless act to help others it was just a bit silly

There is no ‘rule’ stopping those without children from parking in P&C spaces. They are a concession not a legal provision.

What has this got to do with the law ?

There are rules (unwritten and written), and there are laws.

You haven't actually proved anyone was selfish.

Funny how they told me to crack on then innit.

Same our store manager knows we use the P&C spaces. See him often having a cig when we park up and he'll get mum a trolley 😊

The disabled spaces weren't full. The carpark wasn't full

But you can get a parking ticket for parking in a disabled bay in a supermarket so I understand why the elderly couple didn’t do that.

I got a ticket in Asda once because we forgot to display a blue badge. I had to get the manager to write a letter confirming he had seen the blue badge at the time of the infringement.

Cadeaukatze · 05/10/2026 16:56

Jerrybalanitis · 05/10/2026 13:59

Report to management? The supermarket manager? The security guard? Your teacher? Those spaces are a market ploy and bring out the worst in everyone. More trouble than worth.

Agreed. Get rid of them and just have blue badge spaces.

They could have larger spaces for people who want them, but charge (more) for them. I am sure if they charged for them most parents would decide they didn't need them after all (or choose smaller cars).

EscCtrl · 05/10/2026 16:56

If the elderly couple had disabilities then would they not have said so, and won the argument? And hopefully gotten an apology? The elderly couple didn't make that case in a prolonged argument. That inclines me to think they probably weren't disabled.

SparklingTurquoiseOcean · 05/10/2026 16:57

Megifer · 05/10/2026 14:26

I use them when I have my mum with me and would have just said "yes" and not engaged with you any further, so at least you got the reaction you clearly wanted from them 🤷‍♀️

Nothing to brag about. It's twatty behaviour really. You and your mum can use plenty of other spaces.

Monty36 · 05/10/2026 16:57

People bashing older people need to reflect on how fast it old age will come to you.
When you are 20 no, you are young and feel as if you will be young forever.
When you are 30 something, yes still young. Because you are not 40.
Ouch. 40 hurts. Then you are middle aged. But early 40’s convince yourself you really are quite young. But it all seems to be going by a bit too quickly. The years seem shorter each year.
50 comes faster than you can believe. How did that happen ? Why ? It doesn’t seem fair. You try to convince yourself you are the new 30. You are not. You are 50.
You realise you are not considered youngish anymore. But firmly middle aged.
Then you rapidly turn the wrong side of 55. And 60 is what you have to look forward to. And considered old by the thirty somethings at work.

It all happens so very very quickly. All I say is do remember this when talking about old people generally. It will happen to you too most likely.

The regular spaces were not full

Or maybe they didn’t feel obligated to explain their medical history to a random busybody in a carpark.

The problem is that there's also a necessity for wider spaces for people who have difficulty getting in and out of the car without the door wide open, yet are not disabled enough to qualify for a blue badge. That necessity isn't being met if people aren't prepared to share the wider P&C bays.

I'd take a bet that anyone over 70 needs a wider bay way more than people with a lithe 7 year old in the car.

dustabsorber · 05/10/2026 16:59

Back in the 70s this didn't happen as plebs didn't have cars, so there was plenty of space for those that did have cars.

Would have served her right for picking on an elderly person
