Altercation in carpark

1000 replies

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 13:30

I was in a supermarket carpark, I had put my baby in her carseat and had just loaded my groceries in the boot. A car parked in the parent and child space next to me and an older couple got out, early 70s I would guess, able bodied, no kids with them
I said "sorry do you realise thats s parent and child space" and I pointed to the markings.
Well his response was very rude in tone "I came here to do my shopping, not to dance around" ?? "It should be first come first served " and they stormed off. I was a bit taken aback, I said loudly but they were a bit away at this point so not sure if they heard me "god id hate to be so ignorant". I took a picture of their car. Not really sure what I was going to do with it, thinking I would think about it and perhaps report to management. I got into my car
The next he was at my window "you took a photo, its illeageal to take photos of other people's property, delete it." I ensured my doors were locked, he stood behind my car so I couldn't reverse out, she was at my windscreen taking photos of me. Eventually they moved and I got out.
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything but there were loads of other places they could have parked but the parent and child spaces are limited. Its very frustrating when I've all my kids and can't find a free parent and child space because people like this who dont need them take them and they don't give a shit

A good, fair minded store manager would see a courtesy she/he extended to help people, abused, would politely request that said customer move their car and respect the their wishes, or inform them that their custom is no longer welcome. That is within their charge if they had the moral fibre to address it.

Funny how they told me to crack on then innit.

I’m almost certain that if OP had said ‘a couple in their twenties’ replies would be completely different.

Errr, well yeah obviously! Confused

However, these 'someone parked in me baby zone space' threads ALWAYS include entitled senior citizens and elderly people. NEVER younger people... in their 20s, 30s, and 40s... Funny that. Because I see younger people parking in them quite often (with no children!) WAY more than I see older people (55-60 plus) doing it.

But hey, it's fun to bash the elderly hey?! Hmm

There is no ‘rule’ stopping those without children from parking in P&C spaces. They are a concession not a legal provision.

A shop can decide to ask people to leave if they don't follow their rules. As can a nightclub refuse you for wearing trainers. Stop leaning on the statute books to inform your morals.

Especially when you’ve got a baby with you, what on earth were you thinking?

That a couple in their 70s are an easy target I expect.

Good point. Not a good look OP! 🫣

Are you human?

ghostyslovesheets · 05/10/2026 16:45

There are many reasons someone might need one but can’t apply for a BB

my daughter had to use a wheelchair while recovering from encephalitis - she eventually learned to walk (and talk and write) again but for a few months walking was too much - no BB and getting out of the house to mooch round Morrisons was something she enjoyed and could manage - I needed space for the chair to lift her into.

Honestly I don’t judge.

I did judge the cunt in the Porsche who took the last blue badge space out side Primark on Sunday sans BB - but that cunt was a cunt

thisfilmisboring123 · 05/10/2026 16:46

Gutachenow · 05/10/2026 16:43

Exactly. My mother took the bus into town with three kids and a pushchair to do the weekly shopping. No dramas either

So fucking boring when people throw out the old ‘in my day’.

Ok we didn’t have them. So what?
We do now.
Just makes life a little easier for parents.

If you don’t need them, don’t use them.
What’s so difficult?

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 16:46

Moonnstarz · 05/10/2026 16:05

Considering they were elderly I would have given them the benefit of doubt and assumed they were using these spaces as the disabled spaces were full. I don't think I would have said anything because of this.

The disabled spaces weren't full. The carpark wasn't full

Fair play to you OP. A woman at our toddler group had a similar altercation with a young man in his ( she reckoned) early twenties. He was extremely nasty and derogatory to her so once he’d left she took a shitty nappy from the nappy bag and slapped it into his windscreen, she then called the security guard and told him and the security guard nearly pissed himself laughing.

Oh dear.

I am entitled to a reasonable adjustment. Under law.

I’d say using a P&C space whilst waiting for a BB is reasonable, given the circumstances of both parties, wouldn't you?

Yeah, that's not going to happen. No manager or staff member is going to risk alienating people by telling them to get out of the parent and child spaces... Not when the woman with a child can simply park in another space...

NEVER have I seen anyone told off (by staff member in a supermarket) for parking in a supermarket parent and child space.

No, I'm an AI.

Yes of course I am, and a human that is sick to death of everyone knowing their rights without knowing their responsibilities.

What is your obsession with big burly men? I think you need a cold shower.

Actually a few people have said OP wouldn't pick on a man and that she chose this couple because of their age.

What is your obsession with me? I think you need a cold shower Wink

Rosscameasdoody · 05/10/2026 16:49

P&C spaces are intended for parents whose children are accompanying them into the shop or venue, or whatever. If we’re going to talk about misuse, how about we look at parental misuse too. Because similarly a to BB holder staying in the car in a disabled space while someone non disabled does the running round, l’ve lost count of the number of parents I see pulling into P&C spaces and leaving the child in the car.

TheOvertGardener · 05/10/2026 16:49

Icecreamsundaz · 05/10/2026 16:46

The disabled spaces weren't full. The carpark wasn't full

Then there was plenty of parking for everyone and you were being a busy body.

That is the other part of these threads I'd forgotten OP, the disability top trumps we get to see play out. Hard to believe, but this isn't about you, it is about otherwise able bodies entitled people abusing a courtesy then getting uppity when their ignorance is pointed out to them.

Why obviously?
Why does their age matter?

Bash the elderly. How dramatic?

OMG how did mothers cope when there were no parent and child spaces?! 😱

Must have been such a terribly dark time!

With great difficulty.

My dc are now adults but I distinctly recall having to climb through the back of my car when one was a little baby because the two cars on either side of mine had parked so closely I couldn't get any doors open wide enough to get him in safetly. Good bloody job I was fit and slim at the time.

Parent and child spaces are there for a reason just as disabled spaces are, they were born out of necessity.

Everanewbie · 05/10/2026 16:48

Yes, mores the pity. Like I said, more hassle than its worth.

The reason they don’t is because legally they don’t have the power to ask them to move from the P&C space. They are a concession, not a legal requirement.

Maybe someone will inform you of your error and send photos to your insurance company then. See how that works?

Just leave people alone. Worry about yourself.

Unfortunately thats the world is becoming, worry about yourself.
What about helping others? And yea I had a space but yhe next parent who arrived wouldn't have had. What about them? Why has everyone become so selfish??

OP posts:
Cobrakainerd · 05/10/2026 16:50

You provoked an argument, got the argument then are complaining.

P&C spaces are a cynical marketing tool by supermarkets, do you think they actually care about your kid. They wouldn't sell half the stuff they do if they did. Money making is the primary function of supermarkets and their parking spaces.
If supermarkets actually cared about customers the P&C spaces should be double sized at the back of car park with walk ways to the door. Disabled and elderly spaces at the front near doors.

Not even hospitals do. I took someone to the hospital clinic who has a blue badge. There was only one blue badge bay and the car had no BB displayed and the car park was full. I asked the receptionist at the NHS clinic if she could use her tannoy to ask the person in the BB bay to move and she said they don’t have the powers to do that.
