Giving up work

Oksurething · 05/10/2026 09:49

Hi all, I am asking here due to there being a lot of followers to this sub,

my partner receives benefits for his mental health, it’s the higher rate so I could qualify to be his caregiver, his rate and circumstances aren’t likely to change.

after calculating my income, I’d be the same off financially,

would it be wise to give up working full time to do this? I’m constantly drained from work and battle to keep on top of my household responsibilities.

So, my question is; if you could get out of the rat race, would you?

OP posts:

Does he actually need a carer? From how you've worded it, it sounds more like you just don't want to work?

SUPerSaver721 · 05/10/2026 19:32

No way would I give up a job for a man. You would end up with mental health issues yourself sitting at home with him. Have you been together long? I couldnt go with someone eho had significant mental health issues. Keep your job.

MyWildOliveGoose · 05/10/2026 19:30

That’s not what’s happening here. Why are you bringing other people’s real situations into this here situation? OP asked if she - an able bodied person, should give up her job and claim benefits to sit at home and care for her able bodied but mentally unwell boyfriend who hasn’t needed a carer and doesn’t need a carer but she wants more time with him and less time being a responsible adult. She wants to not be at work, basically, but have money to live freely and better than she feels she is now because she has no time.

My point was that that, is ridiculous! As a disabled single mum that is also entitled to higher rate disability allowance, yet works full time, and is often burnt out, I’m offended and I hope this woman gets a grip tbh. If only we could all just give up and cheat the system.

She has not said anything about the care he gets from services or other family members.

People can and do have their care needs change where they need a carer when they did not before. So it does not really matter that he does not have a carer now. Many people who have one now, didn't at some point.

The issue here is that she wants move in with him and claim CA so she can have an easier life. That is not what it is for.

True. It does read like she thinks she would have an easier free life.

Oh please, I’m not the only one that’s noticed she quite literally has worded it as … she doesn’t want to work, rather than he needs a carer lol stop trying to argue with me to justify this strangers behaviour.

I am not. I agree that she wants to claim CA so she does not have to work. I have said that in multiple comments. That is not what CA is for.
I am just not agreeing that because he does not have a carer now means he does not need one.

Ok, let me rephrase then.. she doesn’t need to be his carer, she needs to go to work lol

Oksurething · 05/10/2026 11:50

thank you all for commenting so far,

I am mid thirties,
we live separately, I have a 15 yo,

I have a fairly good, local job but take home isn’t much for the south east and as said, I’d be only a little down,
For years, it’s seems as much my wages have gone up, so has inflation lol
I don’t have savings, riches in the family or anything, so I’m unlikely to ever be well off in my life.
Home Bargains… more like pound land lol

the believe the qualifications I have so far could help me secure another job, I’m a low paid technician in large industry (could earn more if I traveled a few hours to London) but the commute would wipe me out, I know it, I’m sure there are others who could cope, I however, would not.
If we split up or he died, would I not just explain I was caring for a relative in the work gap? I’d be older and out the swing of it but surely that’s about it,

I appreciate there is some judgement on taxpayers etc. sorry to offend but that’s not my question, it’s more about how we spend our lives, for me personally, it feels hard to thrive on just weekends and 25days leave a year,
in terms of lifestyles, we both have a desire to do good in the world, he volunteers, we both give time to our church congregation and I was considering volunteering in palliative care, so I have no worries about what I’d get up to,

AI seems to think that carers allowance is pretty stable and has been for decades,
And in terms of his award, it’s reassessed annually but his mental health records are serious and unlikely to ever be truly fit-to-work again, and although he doesn’t need me to wipe his ass, it would do him a lot of good to have me around, we both want to spend our lives together, which adds to the acceptance never being financially well-off.

thanks again for the comments ♥️ they are helping me see different perspectives

You want to be a full time carer as a lifestyle choice? If you’re going to have loads of free time to fulfil your life ambitions it doesn’t sound like he needs a carer.

caringcarer · 05/10/2026 19:40

How can £86.45 Carers Allowance be equal to earnings from a full time job? Plus if you earn under £204 per week you can work andclaim Carers Allowance.

Merrybandofpirates · 05/10/2026 14:03

Why does he actually need a carer? How much is he currently paying for care?

Or is it that he doesn’t actually need a carer, but you’ve seen a way to have an easy life by claiming he does?

Absolutely.

It seems he's quite able to go many places... except a workplace.

caringcarer · 05/10/2026 19:45

Seriously I'd wait until after the government review of PIP in October or November. If he has MH problems only he could be downgraded on his PIP. If he's well enough to volunteer then obviously he could work in some capacity.

And they seem to think going to church and doing ad hoc ‘charity’ work justifies it. Unbelievable.

That is really not fair. Going to church, or doing a bit of volunteering does not means someone can hold down a job.
It is almost like you think anyone too disabled to work should not be allowed to leave their home at all.

Good point. All benefits will most certainly be reduced by any government. It would be foolish for OP to rely on them in her 30s.

MyWildOliveGoose · 05/10/2026 19:49

Also, if his PIP and LCWRA is reviewed annually that means they’re expecting his circumstances or award to change. If they really believed he was going to be entitled to it forever it would be reviewed every 3-5 years, and LCWRA wouldn’t be reviewed at all. Also, doctors (GPs and mental healthcare) are going to soon be rolling out the “support back to work scheme” for those who have been signed off due to mental health issues. I think you should definitely give up your job and be his carer, and see how it all plays out for you. Please do update us in 6 months time and let us know.

Eileen101 · 05/10/2026 19:52

Absolutely would not. Personally I would not want to make myself financially vulnerable and reliant on someone/something i.e. the benefits system in this case. Especially with reforms to benefits being a hot topic.

Yeah that's right. Because he's clearly capable of going where he likes, just not a workplace, I think all disabled people should be locked up.

Hyperbolic attitudes like that do a real disservice to the disabled community.

Sincerely, mother of 3. 1 disabled.

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · 05/10/2026 19:53

If I could get out of the rat race I would, but only with security and savings tbh. What if they cut you off suddenly as he you had to wait a few weeks to get it back?

LancashireButterPie · 05/10/2026 19:53

cattussuperior · 05/10/2026 10:21

making yourself vulnerable to any reforms. Ridiculous to think that can never happen!

Or indeed Reform.
If Nigel and his pals get in, I feel benefits will be cut.
Look at part time options OP and see if there are any opportunities for your DH to get involved in supportive community projects. Our town has a few "men in sheds" type projects.

You are the one that thinks because he can go to church and do a bit of volunteering means he is swinging the lead.
He can not attend either things and he would not be threatened with a loss of money.

Sincerely, me. Disabled.

If you want to ignore PIP fraud being at it's highest level and the majority being MH claims, feel free.

Snowie99 · 05/10/2026 19:56

No. I need my identity and self respect, and could never be reliant on someone else’s benefits

Yes, what support is he getting from services/agencies?
My town has a Men's Shed thing too. Also walks for men struggling with MH/isolation.
If he is not already, a social prescriber at his GP could look into what is about for him.
