AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

Jason's sourdough is all I buy as it only contains flour, water, salt and fermented wheat flour. Cheap bread contains all sorts of rubbish.

Gross. It tastes vile. There are nicer breads than that.

I’m not criticising my neighbour. I am just saying how can anyone eat this bread daily?

I hear you. It gives me constipation and I just feel horrid.

Bonjovispjs · 03/10/2026 13:15

A fried white slice is food of the Gods 😋

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

Ffs! 🤦‍♀️

Fizbosshoes · 03/10/2026 13:20

ive had jam and crisps sandwiches before (very occassionally)
Drop me a follow for more culinary tips! 😉

My dad was prescribed cheap white bread when he had radiation therapy recently, "low gas" producing food. He ate it bcz that was what he was recommended.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 03/10/2026 13:25

I love cheap white bread, loads of butter and a chicken & mushroom pot noodle inside...food of the gods.

Sourdough on the order hand, absolutely vile

Wait until you find out that there's a whole filthy section of society who use cheap white bread to make instant noodle sandwiches 🤤

As this is a thread of bread fans, has anyone seen Irish soda bread in the supermarket recently?
I can't find it in Asda, Aldi, or M&S food?

We usually get Warburtons Tiger Loaf, tastes okay as toast and is nice in a packed lunch.

Wait till low carbers join the thread, whether artisan or Tesco Value, all bread is devil food.

I am 55 and grew up in the north and then have lived in London since I was 21. I have heard of crisp sandwiches/butties but have not ever had one or seen anyone eat one.

However, I love all bread, cheap and posh. And like crisps. So what is the iconic recipe?

Must use hand rolled straight from the udder non salted butter pats

Recipe may be pushing it a bit and it’s a very customisable dish but at its heart it’s white bread (fresher is better you want it soft)l decent layer of butter and then crisp of choice layered several layers deep. Place bread on top and smoosh. My favourite additions are a decent mature cheddar which goes very well with salt and vinegar crisps or dairylea which goes very well with cheese wotsits.

i unfortunately can no longer eat crisp sandwiches due to diet issues so just sitting here drooling and feeling sorry for myself,

OMG my absolute favourite. Has to be Supernoodles. I've seen some cretins use Pot Noodles and that's not right.

I love this thread. And also ginger biscuits dipped in milky builders tea.

Edited

Are milky builders the ones who never take their shirt off ?
And would they mind you dipping your nuts even ginger ones in their tea ?

IndigoBluey · 03/10/2026 13:37

Hot buttered white toast dipped into hot mug of tea yum

Fried bread. Of course. With eggs that have a runny yolk you can dip it into. Lovely.

I currently have a minor but painful jaw injury. Would KILL to eat something crispy or crunchy

Heathens! I cannot tell you the level of joy I felt when I discovered chicken supernoodles are accidentally vegan and instant nood sandwiches were on the menu again

I really like wholemeal but would have to spend all day on the loo if I ate it.

Interested to know which you buy please. I have a soya allergy and I find cheap bread, especially white, often contains soya.

We get the Aldi essentials white bread so the cheapest of the cheap!

Crediblehedge · 03/10/2026 14:38

Meh we always had to buy cheap bread - its what is within our budget. Until I found a breadmaker in a charity shop. Now I can make two nice loaves for the price of one cheap one so we have fresh bread each day. I just set the breadmaker going before I go to bed and wake up to great bread in the morning.

Not everybody has access to or can afford good food

Cretin/heathen reporting for duty!

Fiddlesticks1 · 03/10/2026 14:59

Many moons ago the only bread I could afford was the cheapest from Sainsbury’s. I would get a loaf out the freezer as and when needed.
I noticed that once defrosted the bread was stale.
I spoke to the bakery manager to complain. His response was “You don’t call that bread do you?” My response was - well that’s what you sell it as. He apologised and gave me a shopping voucher.

I’m low carb by necessity due to T2 diabetes that just will not behave if I dare to allow carbs to pass my lips. God I miss bread! Used to love the jalepeno and cheddar fresh bread from the co-op toasted with real butter. 😭😩😭
