AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

We tend to buy the next level 'up' in white bread, a brand rather than the cheapest supermarket own-brand. In an ideal world if I could afford it I would mostly buy a lot more expensive seeded / malted / sourdough bread etc, but we can't. The very cheapest own-brand white bread I agree is not very nice (tried them all pretty much) but the next step up is fine. I imagine it's the same for most people that it's budget driving the decision making.

thanks to t his thread i have bought Waitrose cheapest white bread.
roll on breakfast tomorrow,

It's amazing what you'll find yourself eating when your bread budget is 99p or under.

Your neighbour is a kind soul and you need to have a word with yourself, and also get acquainted with your toaster.

When you're feeling better, you can use what remains of the bread to make nice French toast.

incognito1991 · 03/10/2026 16:21

I buy Asda own bread it’s 74p, I buy it purely because I don’t notice the difference between that bread and branded such as hovis. I don’t like brown or wholemeal bread

DelphiniumBlue · 03/10/2026 17:12

Cheapo sliced white bread is a treat for me! I very rarely have it because I know it has zero nutritional content and plays havoc with my guts, but toasted with loads of butter, or in a cheese and crisp sandwich, it’s delicious! But I only have it about once a year.

wheredidtheteago · 03/10/2026 17:13

Because that’s all some people can afford, darling.

If wanting real food is pretentious then we have a huge problem. The way it’s made means they don’t actually let it rise using yeast. In my view that makes it not really bread.

So the bible has got it wrong calling it unleavened bread? All the cultures who had flat breads (including the English) are wrong? Bread was more nutritious before yeast. You've got it backwards.
I only eat white bread in the form of sub rolls with sausages on, fancy breads and sausages just don't go together. Actually I'm lying, fishfinger butties need white bread.

RikthePoet · 03/10/2026 17:31

Artisan or homemade bread has more taste and texture, but cheap shit factory bread can sometimes be exactly what you want.

intrepidpanda · 03/10/2026 17:31

Njuy · 03/10/2026 07:18

Ooh I might make that - still got 5 slices left

So you fair got through it then despite it being disgusting.

Trishyb10 · 03/10/2026 17:58

you must be over privileged and crazy… ten years ago when i got made redundant i had £20 a week for food shopping, i went down to 7 stone… its called eating on the basics, bread, beans, cornflakes, eggs…. Get a grip..

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

You've never had a crisp butty? You haven't lived!!

Rockpunkdisco · 03/10/2026 18:02

Love my multiseed and rye bread but there are times when inly plain white bread hits the spot!

spanishcheese · 03/10/2026 18:17

Goodness, who knew so many people could get so offended on behalf of spongey lumps of flavourless textureless pale additive-laden pap?

[[Sits back and waits for the onslaught ...]

ForQuirkyFawn · 03/10/2026 18:22

It's not bad for certain things, I do like a bacon butty with white bread, also a fried slice is nice etc...

myfaceismyown · 03/10/2026 18:25

Basic thin slice white bead definately has its place. When my adult DD is unwell she makes herself "nursery school" toast - barely toasted white bread which has glanced at some Lurpak... Might help you feel better too OP.
We grow heritage tomatoes and cucumbers. If we were to use our homemade sourdough or bought seedy granary breads it would overwhelm the delicious flavours in a sandwich. White breas, slightly salted butter from the local dairy, sliced toms or cucumber. I use it for this purpose and either pop the rest back in the freezer or sprinkle with garlic oil and some fresh chopped herbs to make croutons. Yum!

zingally · 03/10/2026 18:28

Your neighbour did a kind and helpful thing, and your response was to go online behind her back and bitch? Okay.
Personally, I like the cheapy white bread! I've never reall been a fan of brown/wholemeal, even as a child. To me, it's got a funny "sweet" taste, and the texture seems sort of doughy and sweaty to me. Each to their own! No need to yuck someone else's yum.
Clearly there's huge audiences for both sorts of bread, as there seems to be about equal amounts of both on the shelves.

I think we need to explain to her what a "weekend" is.

👏

shhblackbag · 03/10/2026 18:33

You know why. But if it made you feel better to be snobbish about other people's circumstances, I guess that's on you.

You have obviously posted this for attention.
Some people simply cannot afford to buy anything better.
So instead of being a snob, thank your lucky stars.

UniquePinkSwan · 03/10/2026 18:37

Expensive bread is just as bad as cheap
bread. They both turn to sugar in your body

youshouldnthaveasked · 03/10/2026 18:38

How can anyone eat it but you’ve almost eaten the full loaf 😂😂

Coco1379 · 03/10/2026 18:39

Because they can’t afford anything else?

cupfinalchaos · 03/10/2026 18:41

I’m with you op. It’s revolting with no taste let alone nutrients. My children think it’s a delicacy as I never have it in the kitchen😂

There are some people who eat it who can't afford anything else. But it's hardly a boast to say you can afford a couple of quid more for a loaf of bread. The vast majority of it is bought by people who could afford alternatives, but choose it instead.

A thread bemoaning the quality of something is not inherently a brag or snobbery.

StarCourt · 03/10/2026 18:42

Shatenoeuf · 03/10/2026 06:50

Its the texture of this stuff a lot of people like - its very easy to eat. I think when you eat a lot of cheap processed food you get used to it & very freah homemade stuff becomes too overwhelming.

Lets face it though, most people buying it do so because its be very cheap and what they can afford.

Fresh homemade bread becomes overwhelming??
Only on MN would you ever hear that sentence it’s so ridiculous
