AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

It has to be decent bread you say? Wow how privileged you are

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

Then you've never lived!!

I just wrote the same thing🤣🤣. I hadn't seen your post before I reacted to the other post!!

Calloja23 · 03/10/2026 19:03

Probably because they can’t afford anything else. Don’t be so pompous and ungrateful. It was very kind of your neighbour..

Food made using traditional processes, not highly complex and additive-heavy industrial processes. It’s not pretentious to think ultra processed white bread is terrible. There’s plenty of evidence it’s bad for your health and in places with a thriving culture of accessible artisanal baking (France) people don’t choose to eat it in anything like the same numbers.

Of course they don't. Have you ever tried a supermarket sliced loaf in France? (like a sliced white bread rather than a sliced loaf of French bread).

It is horrible.

OPs comments are about the bread, not the neighbour.

Then why did she mention the neighbour if it was just about bread.

HelloPossible · 03/10/2026 19:18

I am a food snob in that I haven’t eaten a decent Sourdough bread in this country ever and have given up buying it, it is something but it’s not Sourdough (my first taste was in San Francisco way back when) But can eat cheap white or whole meal sliced m and s bread with something, like the base for a tuna melt until the cows come home. Mainly because it tastes fresh and hasn’t left the factory weeks ago. The turn over of fresh food in a Supermarket is a big part of how it tastes and why expensive isn’t necessarily the best. Don’t get me started on Pret’s bread.

Maybe try a slice of humble pie instead??

Single50something · 03/10/2026 19:37

Agree, it's sh*te. Tasteless squashy crap. Even when I was out of work for a few years in the 80s I wouldn't buy it ...just like eating a plastic bag .

You must have led a very sheltered life.
Even I have heard of it.
Though not partaken...

Ooh try it :) grated cheese and cheese and onion squares is a good combo 😋

luckylavender · 03/10/2026 19:47

Blimey, your neighbour does something lovely and you come and moan on here. It’s all a lot of people can afford.

MyFavouriteGame · 03/10/2026 07:04

People buy it because it’s cheap, some people have no money.

Also cheap white bread makes the best toast and bacon sandwich.

Exactly this. I usually eat seeded, wholemeal or sourdough but love white plastic bread every now & then for toast or a bacon sarnie. I hope u were appreciative of your neighbour's kindness as it was very thoughtful of her.

Inextremis · 03/10/2026 19:55

Most of the time, I eat low carb, so no bread of any kind for me - but when I do eat bread, a bacon sandwich made with plain white supermarket cheap bread is wonderful. Also cold white toast with butter and marmalade. I say this as someone who loves Hovis Granary and who makes her own bread (yeast bread and soda bread) for everyday use when not low-carbing. It's just another option, OP, you don't have to like it, but try to understand that your tastes may differ from those of others.

Try monster munch too.
I thought eating crisp sandwiches was a European thing. It is very common in Ireland.
Whenever the children have world food day in school, you’ll always find an Irish child who made Tayto crisps on Brennan’s white bread with Kerry gold butter. Yum.

Edited

Tbh, Monster Munch might be a step too far. I don't like them on their own and I'm not sure how the 3 dimensional size of them will fit in a sandwich. You know a Wotsit is going to squash nicely

Wotsits. With some cheap white bread, butter you can sink your teeth in and some over processed ham. Heaven.

Calenia · 03/10/2026 20:06

You sound like an ungrateful snob tbh

Whatinthedoopla · 03/10/2026 20:07

No one is obliged to give gifts.

It shows more about you this comment than it does about them.

ArcticSnowyOwl · 03/10/2026 20:07

How flippin ungrateful are you?! Maybe she bought it thoughtfully as something simple and plain for you after your stomach issue, and/or maybe it was all she could afford. Bet she would be delighted to hear you're moaning about it on Mumsnet. Sounds like you don't deserve the time, thought or money she wasted on you.

JoBrandsCleaner · 03/10/2026 20:14

I think Nigella Lawson once said that she can’t bear food snobbery, and she really is posh 😏

Middleagedspreadisreal · 03/10/2026 20:23

It turns my stomach when I see people eating white bread sandwiches at work. There's nothing good about it. Vile stuff, it should be banned.

Sueandthegoldfish · 03/10/2026 20:23

It’s the only bread for a proper bacon buttie or fish finger sarnie 😄
