AIBU how can people eat cheap white bread

Recovering from a stomach bug. One of the first things to eat is dry white toast.

My neighbour bought me a loaf of white bread. The stuff that costs 55p-80p, which many people buy based on the gaps on the shelf.

How can anyone buy this stuff normally? There’s nothing to it. No taste, weird texture.

I thought that it was just me from recovering from the bug. I have a few slices left. Again no taste, weird texture and just awful.

I do have bread - wholemeal. With white bread, it has to be a decent bread

2 reasons…1) it’s delicious toasted with loads of butter and a strong cup of tea.

  1. we’re in a cost of living crisis where it’s a privilege to not have to buy the cheapest bread on the shelf

I'm a hippie, dippy lentil weaver, the sort who sprouts her own seeds, soaks her own chickpeas to make humous and of course I bake my own sourdough bread. However cheap white bread with lashings of butter is my guilty pleasure and I love it when I'm at my parents with a big mug of builders tea. I wouldn't enjoy the whole loaf so I never buy it for myself but I do enjoy a few slices, takes me back to my childhood!

tillyandmilly · 03/10/2026 21:18

Very kind of neighbour but white bread has no nutritional value - and is very unhealthy as it has refined grains and is linked in some studies to an increased risk of weight gain and type 2 diabetes. I only eat Jason’s bread - the protein one - I am on a low wage but don’t scrimp on food

nomoreraintoday · 03/10/2026 21:30

Cheap white sliced bread has its own appeal. It shouldn’t be in the same category as fancy sourdough or whatever but it has its place! Particularly when recovering from a hangover or a minor illness.

alcovecupboards · 03/10/2026 21:42

Because it's all they can afford. Stop being so awful about your neighbour's kind gesture. Having said that - it is bloody awful. One of the major benefits of lockdown was the rise of sourdough. Much nicer.

oviraptor21 · 03/10/2026 21:47

Ugh - sourdough - funny vinegary taste and dry.
Cheap white - nice enough and keeps well.
Nice bakery bloomer, sliced thickly and spread with butter - now we're talking 😋

Hear me out. Smoky bacon crisps, cheap white bread, plenty of butter.

Can’t argue with that

It’s the only bread for a proper bacon buttie or fish finger sarnie 😄

It’s also the only bread for a peanut butter sarnie!

TheRealSmurfette · 03/10/2026 22:16

Agree with you about the bread. But then you’re being very ungrateful. So YABU.

OonaStubbs · 03/10/2026 22:24

When my brother was in the army based in Belgium he used to say that a lot of the soldiers would only eat Mothers Pride white sliced bread which was brought over the UK in bulk and frozen, rather than the local fresh French bread.

I think we need to explain to her what a "weekend" is.

That sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone putting crisps in sandwiches.

Oooh la-di-da 😂

When I was a child, back in the dark ages, a favourite lunch for me and dsis was a crisp sandwich. My mum was a single parent and had to work. In school holidays we were at home alone and for lunch we'd butter two slices of white bread, crunchy up a bag of Bovril crisps and spread across one slice of the bread. Then a sprinkling of white sugar. Slap the other slice of bread on top. Food of the Gods! An even better treat was to toast one side of the bread. Spread butter on the untoasted side and add a generous tablespoon of sugar. Place under the grill until the sugar has melted!
My ds loves all the 'healthy' breads, but due to his bowel disease is only allowed cheap white stuff, otherwise he is trapped in the bathroom and in pain for hours.

Finally, @Lomonald if you like tinned tomato soup try this:
2 500g cartons of passata
1 tin of tomatoes
Milk (I usually fill the empty tomato tin)
2 vegetable stock pots
1 tablespoon sugar.
Put everything in a large pan and heat for around 20 minutes. I try to keep it just below boiling point. Blend with a stick blender. At this point it can be frozen. I usually add a small pot of cream at this stage. Black pepper to taste. This makes sufficient for me to take a generous portion to work every day for a week and will keep nicely in a container in the fridge from Sunday to Friday. Tastes as good as a tin and much cheaper

Are you related to the original poster?

You seem to look down upon people enjoying their food.

staceyflack · 03/10/2026 23:09

Omg 😲 Some of the shit people question on here. Its wild i realise, but shock, horror some people dont even like bread! Not me, unfortunately, I love it any and all of it. But I fully comprehend that different people like different things...its very simple ffs.

Bigcat25 · 03/10/2026 23:12

I mean, dry toast is never gonna be the best tasting. If it was toasted with butter and cheese it would be yummy.

Thanks for the idea. I’ve just had this. Delicious!

staceyflack · 03/10/2026 23:12

Ps. Crisp sandwich 🥪 "disgusting" 🤣 I can only assume that youve never had one @user1497787065 You're proper missing out 😋

GlosGirl82 · 03/10/2026 23:15

I love it - never have it but if I do - it’s such a treat!

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 03/10/2026 23:21

It is rumoured that in some areas of the UK, that buying cheap white bread is an offence punshable by the death sentence.

If it isn't. I think there are some people wish it was. Oinks and Chavs finally eradicated. A Triumph

PruLeithsNecklace · 03/10/2026 23:27

I like soft white bread, better than the whole meal stuff my parents made me eat when I was growing up. Similarly I sometimes like to eat a McDonalds or Burger King. So it’s not the fanciest, most nutritional food you can buy but it’s soft, easy to eat and you know exactly what it’s going to taste like when you buy it.

FairViewRosie25 · 03/10/2026 23:39

Christ now your talking mince and onion in white with butter 😍😍

ByWittyLimePoet · 03/10/2026 23:46

Zzzzzzzzz

harbourlightsbaby · 03/10/2026 23:47

Absolutely love the stuff, never eat it now though, because I know how unhealthy it is. But I could eat a whole bloody loaf toasted with loads of butter on top and then just a little bit of marmite.

We get the Aldi essentials white bread so the cheapest of the cheap!

Thanks. I didn't know that was soya free.
