AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

Who or what is stopping these 'struggling' families from buying a big house? You have a weird thought process.

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

Once again. So what.
My Dsis’s front sitting room is bigger than my entire downstairs in her three storey house with one child and a home gym.

It's not like they're illegal migrants being given a 5 bedroom mansion over the homeless one armed pensioner who fought in WWII.

It's 2 people buying whatever property they want.

So what???

Should they only be allowed to buy a 1 bed house?

What happens if their 2 bed house is actually bigger than the 2 bed down the road? Should they be limited to square footage? After all, a family needs the space more than they do....

Nobody seems to be proposing changing the law, it’s just a casual observation. People judge all sorts of things. I just think living in an enormous house as a couple is a bit gauche.

And?

Statsquestion1 · 02/10/2026 20:28

Yeah we had this when we bought our 5 bed…even though we have two dc! Neighbours asked were we expecting and I said “lord no we are done”, so she then proceeded to tell me we are wasting two bedrooms that someone else could put to use. Em…ok but we do use them! One as an office and the other is my dh’s den so 🙌

LoughboroughBex · 02/10/2026 20:29

I moved last year from a small 3 bed to a reasonable sized 4 bed - about 50% bigger in square footage. However, the new house is far more energy efficient/better insulated so our heating costs have actually reduced.

Can anyone tell me if this is acceptable or do we need to sell up immediately and move into our car? Although perhaps that’s a bit too big as it does have five seats and there’s only two of us 🤣

I agree with you OP although I can see we are very much in the minority here 😬 but then I find anyone using far more than they need in any sense to be a bit wrong. It’s not that I would ban it, but inwardly I find it a bit cringey when 2 people rattle around a 5 bedroom house with 5 acres, ‘because we need the space’

Me too. However having had to move and pay stamp duty each time our family grew, I can see the advantage.

wishfulthinking25 · 02/10/2026 20:30

Maybe they plan to have 3/4 children? Or none at all, or what business is it of yours? If they are buying a property and are not council tenants please tell me why you think it should be ‘going to a family who needs the space’ ? Nothing is going anywhere, they’re not being handed the house, they’re paying for it (presumably). Are you more upset that 20 somethings could afford to buy it?

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 02/10/2026 20:30

Perhaps they're planning on employing staff and need a room for the butler, one for the chef and one for a little man who will power a boiler using a stationary bicycle in order to save on heating costs.

LoveHearts69 · 02/10/2026 20:31

Haha I would love a five bedroom house for our family but as the mortgage and council tax on that is out of our price range they’re welcome to it.

For what it’s worth one of my neighbours is in a large property like that and bought it with inheritance when they were a couple in their late 20’s and now have two young children.

I think you having that opinion is “gauche”. It’s not your money, it is not your choice, it is literally and absolutely nothing to do with you. Our house was for sale for more than 2 years before we bought it. Plenty of time for people with multiple children to buy it. They didn’t.

They look like they’re in their late 20s so I very much doubt they have adult kids boomeranging!!

Not that it’s your business or matters about their age… but this makes your post even more batshit!! Maybe they are prepping to have a family?! Or maybe they just want to fill the 4 rooms with their hobbies which is a-ok too as long as it’s not a council house 🤣

DontTellMeWhatICantDo11 · 02/10/2026 20:32

My husband and I bought a 4 bed house when we got married. Hoped for at least 2 children. Ended up with none. Just 4 miscarriages instead over many years. Should we have to move because we are infertile?? To be honest if someone fancies passing the stamp duty for us then we would consider it…..

localnotail · 02/10/2026 20:32

The are going to do some vigorous shagging to fill it up. Wind your neck in.

I actually agree that there needs to be a bigger conversation about the amount of unoccupied bedrooms in this country. Where I live nimbyism re: new house building is rife, but most of it comes from retired couples occupying 1 bedroom of a 3-5 bedroom home. I don’t blame the individuals, there is absolutely zero insensitive to downsize in this county - if anything there are many incentives not too.

But a couple in their 20s is hardly awful is it? They might be imminently about to have a load of kids!

But does it have a swimming pool and room for a pony?

localnotail · 02/10/2026 20:34

Actually, thinking back - I lived in a 4 bed with my ex. One bedroom for us, one my walk-in wardrobe (box room), one guest room and one office. Was pretty comfy.

So future planning then for the 2 kids they’re planning then . 2 kids they’re hoping to have in the future and a spare room for guests. Literally non of your beeswax and sounds perfectly reasonable Yabu.

Unless this is a reverse and you’re worried about people judging you in having a five bed house. In which case crack on

Of course it’s nothing to do with me. I’m sure you also mildly judge, in passing, things that are nothing to do with you. Such is human nature.

EllaPaella · 02/10/2026 20:35

Our neighbours are selling their 4 bedroom house (semi detached to ours). I’m hoping and praying a nice quiet elderly couple buy it!

I don't. If you can afford more than you "need" then it really is not a problem.

They are not private renters and owners all sleeping in one room because a couple dared buy up a 5 bed house.

We sold our 6 bedroom town house to a single woman

i did think it’s a big house for one person to clean,

other than that it’s not my business and I don’t think it’s weird!

Gauche really? And not all 5 bedroom houses are huge often the bedrooms are mainly pretty tiny. And as said above many people work from home these days so one or two bedrooms may actually be used as offices. And people might be intending to have children and friends and family to stay.
