AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

Why is the number of bedrooms always mentioned. Sometimes people want the reception/entertaing area .

Ilmiocompleanno · 02/10/2026 20:20

You say they are in their late twenties so maybe they are hoping to have a large family and that the house will be their forever home.

MrsKateColumbo · 02/10/2026 20:21

Very sensible to buy a family home before DC come along.

flourpetal · 02/10/2026 20:21

Yeah, how dare they prepare for children, guests or parents. Selfish. 🙄

I just feel a bit judgey about wastefulness. Heating a massive 5 bedroom house as a couple would feel wrong to me 🤷‍♀️ as would increasing competition for family homes when I would be perfectly fine in, say, a 2/3 bed.

Well it's a good thing you won't have to heat it then, isn't it?

They're a young couple who are likely planning a family. This thread is ridiculous.

WildlyInappropriate · 02/10/2026 20:22

AgeingMillennial · 02/10/2026 20:20

Of course it does as you have to heat and maintain it.

At our own cost. I’m not asking you to chip in for our roof maintenance! We heat the rooms we are in, so I’ll bet we use way less energy than a household with more than 2 members. Crap argument.

bugalugs45 · 02/10/2026 20:22

I live alone in a 3 bed , bought with my own money, does that make me selfish too ?

But it’s still using energy.

People regularly criticise the royals for having empty palaces, this is just the same criticism on a much smaller scale.

You need something more serious to get your knickers in a twist about. Jealousy is a terrible thing op. Such a strange reaction to something which is absolutely none of your business (unless you also put and offer in and are disappointed)

chirrupybird · 02/10/2026 20:23

Did they buy it or is it council? If it is their forever home perhaps they are assuming 3 DC. Or perhaps they are thinking DP may move in, none of your business really. It could also be they need two bedrooms as offices to work from home.

They look like they’re in their late 20s so I very much doubt they have adult kids boomeranging!!

maybe planning on having more than 1 kid. None of your business. Jealous much.

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

Most larger families cannot afford a five bedroom house these days. It does seem crazy but it’s all down to what you can afford, the markets move so quick people grab what they can.
It is going to get worse with house price increased and rents through the roof. The scenes in Madrid this week were crazy with mass evictions.
2025/26 in Ireland had the highest number of evictions since the famine due to government changed for investors. It’s insane.
I appreciate my tiny terrace.

Thisusernameisalwaysavailable · 02/10/2026 20:24

It's not like they're illegal migrants being given a 5 bedroom mansion over the homeless one armed pensioner who fought in WWII.

It's 2 people buying whatever property they want.

So what???

Should they only be allowed to buy a 1 bed house?

What happens if their 2 bed house is actually bigger than the 2 bed down the road? Should they be limited to square footage? After all, a family needs the space more than they do....

FedUpCelery · 02/10/2026 20:24

If we had 5 bedrooms I would foster, however we don't have 5 bedrooms because theyre not in our price range greedy fuckers have bought them all.

Is it silly season on here tonight? Because people in their late 20s are never likely to pop out two or three kids over a decade?

XenoBitch · 02/10/2026 20:25

This thread reminds of the film 'Beetlejuice', where the couple moving into a massive house get harassed by a neighbour too-gooder about how the house should "be for a family", and not a couple that have hobbies and want the space.

Stompythedinosaur · 02/10/2026 20:25

No, it isn't selfish. We're all allow to but the house we want if we can afford it.

So chances are they may well be planning on having children? Maybe they will have guests? Maybe they need a home office each? Maybe as everyone else has said it's nothing really to do with you.

MyLimeGuide · 02/10/2026 20:26

Maybe they have done well for themselves and have lots of friends/a big family that they would like to be able to stay over etc. Please explain why they are selfish?

Oh no! Imagine them having a corridor between those rooms too. Scandalous!

Snorlaxo · 02/10/2026 20:26

A couple who both work from home and have guests to stay could want 4 or 5 bedrooms. (2 home office and 2 guest rooms. )

Would it make you feel better if they knocked down some walls and made 5 bedrooms into 2 or 3 big bedrooms? A loft conversion could mean losing a bedroom to build some stairs.

How is it “wasteful” if they are choosing to spend their own money on it?
Which presumably they have been taxed on. And yes, you are being very “judgey”. Why do you think you know better than someone else? Would it be better for you if they lived in a 3 bed but had 6 cars and 10 holidays a year?
And no, if you live in a “massive” 5 bed house, with just two of you, most of the time, you don’t heat the whole thing. Thermostatic rad valves have existed for decades and most now have “smart” heating which is hugely efficient.

AgentPidge · 02/10/2026 20:26

KingOfPoundbury · 02/10/2026 20:19

Five? That sounds a little claustrophobic to be honest. One must assume that they have some further accommodation elsewhere?

It's actually only a three-bed but two of the bedrooms have been divided and are only 5 feet wide, so it's actually much worse than you could imagine.

WildlyInappropriate · 02/10/2026 20:26

AgeingMillennial · 02/10/2026 20:23

But it’s still using energy.

Of course it uses energy - about the same as we used to use in our previous 2 bed. Or should childless people not expect to keep warm? No room in my house is empty. They just aren’t all in use at the same time of day - probably much like yours.

What are you actually saying here, really. Do you think I should give my home to someone with children? Anyone who could afford it had the chance to buy it when we did. So how could anyone think we shouldn’t be living here? I am totally baffled by you, and the OP.
