AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

OP, if you're really that bothered about the housing shortage for families, why not try doing something about it. Campaign and lobby the government to build more council properties and affordable homes, instead of hating on a young couple. Be happy for them and try helping out the other young people who are struggling.

When I was in my final year at Glasgow Uni, I rented a bedsit near the uni...

After a few months, we discovered that we were living in a former brothel. That would explain that cupboard full of size 16 miniskirts and Jackie magazines. Yeuch.

I was not even allowed to breath my own air.

BreathE. Breathe is what you mean. Breath rhymes with death, so your sentence sounds very odd.

You obviously figured out what she meant though, as you said ‘breathe is what you mean’, so you are being a pedant for the sake of it.

I doubt more council properties will be built. The whole point of selling them off was because the government didn’t want to be responsible for their maintenance.

Yes, a lot were built just after the Second World War and were getting expensive to repair.

I was brought up in one and after a few years of living there our entire road was kitted out with lovely new kitchens and central heating. It must have cost an awful lot as the houses covered quite a big area.

Maybe OP knows me?

I live in a 5 bed detached house with my DH.

I know people judge us, it's not nice.

The absurdity of people thinking you have somehow taken something from someone else as if all of those families didn't have the same opportunity to buy the same house. It's absolutely idiotic.

I’m no fan of Elon Musk but a quick google suggests he’s donated $8.5 bn dollars to charitable causes.

Compared to what he’s worth, that’s roughly the equivalent of having 20 grand and giving away about 200 quid of it to worthy causes whilst keeping the rest ie not particularly impressive. Elon Musk can piss off.

That's true, but the various governments since then have ended up costing themselves more in the long run. Its a lot cheaper to maintain existing homes, than it is to house tens of thousands of families in temporary accommodation due to a lack of suitable housing. But my overall point was that the OP is acting as if the nationwide housing shortage is somehow the fault of this young couple buying the 5 bedroom house, which of course it isn't.

Naturally I figured it out. It's not hard. However it's not at all pedantic. It's pretty basic, primary school English and important to get right. No need to be offended others' behalf.

You have not contributed anything apart from being a pendant. You knew what I meant, and I did not notice until it was too late to edit anyway.
MN is for discussions. It is not homework getting marked by a teacher.

I have a 5 bed house. 2 adults, 1 full time child, 1 part time child.

we’ve worked hard to have what we do and enjoy having the extra space. We use 3 rooms as bedrooms and the rest are used as office, kids lounge, games room etc.

the houses around me of similar size are all child free (or grown up and moved out)

Theotheron · 04/10/2026 17:02

I hope four bedrooms and two public rooms is OK!

SENsupportplease · 04/10/2026 17:11

My in laws have no children at home any more and still have a 5 bed, perhaps they should have put the house up for sale as soon as their last child was no longer there and taken the stamp duty payment for them to have to move? Lose their neighbours of 30 years? Have no space for us to visit with our children. Because it’s selfish for them to have a 5 bed?

Get a grip of yourself OP

My aunt and uncle had a 5 bed house and one child. It didn’t once occur to me they were being selfish. It also meant others (like myself) could stay over when we visited.

Well that’s governments for you. Wanting a quick money saving fix without looking to the future consequences.

No, this wouldn’t bother me. Everyone should be entitled to enough room to swing a cat (or a tiger… You wouldn’t want to though, not unless it’d been stunned. Even then, it’d weigh the best part of a tonne).

and think of the shed fur.....

This government has committed £39bn to the building of new social housing. So yes, new social housing is being built. It isn’t anywhere near enough, but it is a start.

how wasteful and entitled.

A studio flat at best, but a garden shed is more suitable, clearly 😂
