AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

The term "five bed" can also be misleading. Our fifth bedroom is an office, you can squeeze literally a single bed in there, but that's all the floor space, it's also a walk through room/corridor.

Didn't stop the estate agent advertising as a fifth bedroom.🤣🤣

I remember viewing a "4 bed" house that had clearly had one barely double room partitioned to create two tiny single bedrooms.... and I think I am being generous with that. Maybe a tiny nursery and somewhere to keep the hoover.
When we were there, their neighbour got raided by the police. Red key, loads of cops... the whole lot.
We didn't put an offer in.

If they bought it then it is up to them. We are a couple in a 4 bed house we have lived in for almost 40 years and now own mortgage free. We use one of the bedrooms as a spare room in case we have a visitor or one of us is I’ll. the other two bedrooms are hobby rooms. One for each of us. How is a couple buying a big house selfish? If families are struggling to find homes that is not the fault of the couple in the large house. None of your business why they need 5 bedrooms. Maybe they have a large family and want to be able to host them.

This government has committed £39bn to the building of new social housing. So yes, new social housing is being built. It isn’t anywhere near enough, but it is a start.

That’s good to know. Hope it will be fairly distributed.

I’m going to really annoy you with this one, OP.

We live in a road of 5 bedroom detached houses.

Our next door neighbour lives there alone!!

She used to live there with her husband and he’s died so now she’s on her own.

And to really rile you, there’s only 3 of us in our house! 😆

They’ll spend it all on meetings and never build anything.

They look like they’re in their late 20s so I very much doubt they have adult kids boomeranging!!

Ok so they don’t have adult kids but other scenarios are still possible for a couple in late 20s - could be pregnant with triplets, can have aging parents or large families or they are both working from home, maybe they are artists and need big studio space etc etc.

I am very curious how many rooms your house has and how many people occupy your place?

BadLad · 05/10/2026 03:51

Sorry, no. I'm not confining myself to some sad bedsit while you enjoy a nice house with a garden just because you've produced a child and I haven't.

35 pages of comments an the OP has never returned... I think this was surely some sort of piss take.

Maybe her new neighbours threw a massive house warming party, and OP has been stuck in their 5 bed maze of a house ever since 😆

ToadRage · 05/10/2026 14:07

Maybe they have a large family (parents, siblings, cousins) who like to visit. Maybe they enjoy entertaining or plan on having lots of children in the future. Maybe they plan to convert bedrooms in to a study, home gym, cinema room etc. You know nothing about their circumstances, if they can afford it why shouldn't they buy the house they want.

it probably was, however the majority of comments show that people are pretty much in agreement that if people own their large house and are able to pay for it, it is absolutely nobody’s business how they use the five bedrooms.

No way. My DD is returning to work after maternity leave in few weeks and we have planned to give her house a deep clean and have a good ‘sort out’ whilst we’re at it. I wouldn’t dream of doing this without her there .

Wrong thread?

Copperoliverbear · 05/10/2026 17:49

How is it selfish they’ve paid for it and may have a lot of visitors or depending on their age planning for children, it’s really nobody else’s business.

Unicornsbumhole · 05/10/2026 18:05

Jealous much??? We are a single child family who have just upsized to a beautiful 5 bed with space to spare.
You just have sour grapes, work harder then maybe you can afford a 5 bed too

Wadsworthy · 06/10/2026 14:52

Oh @activedough you'd love to judge me. Single person in a house with 3 reception rooms and four bedrooms. I use all the spaces in my house - I love it! I work very hard, save hard, and like to live in a big house. All.By.Myself.

And furthermore, this particular house had been lived in by a family who let it go to wrack & ruin. It's a beautiful historic house, and they pretty much wrecked it. I spent shedloads of my hard-earned salary to renovate it and save it.

Couldn’t you have got a grant of some kind to help if it’s of historic interest?

Wadsworthy · 06/10/2026 16:31

I asked, but the local council didn't fund that sort of thing. I don't mind - I could afford it, and I have a lovely house, saved from developers turning it into flats or an HMO (see the AMA HMO thread on mN - horrible fate!). And I'll sell at a profit if I ever need to downsize.

It is indeed. Was wondering where it had gone 😁

wendlene · 06/10/2026 21:35

Good luck to them. Hope they thoroughly enjoy their space!
We have a 4 bed house with two reception rooms both large enough to be lounge/diners and soon our only child is likely to be moving out. We will not be!
Situations change and over the years we have had family members move in with us for various periods of time but now we can just enjoy our peace and quiet.
