AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

Do you literally only have what you “need”. One pair of shoes? One coat? One pair of knickers because you can wash and dry them overnight can’t you? Oh….but you mean OTHER people. Who have more than you.
I guarantee someone else will look at what YOU have and think it’s more than they would ever “need”.
We live in a capitalist society. And, thank god, because a variety of countries have tried communism….and it ain’t all that.

Nobody else is desperately short of knickers, we don’t have a knickers crisis in the UK do we?

AvidHazelFox · 02/10/2026 20:41

Good on them. I hope they're happy in it.

Asosbabe · 02/10/2026 20:42

We bought a five bed when we got married and had three kids and property was soon ful, with us, the kids and older relatives who needed us

2 home offices and a music studio is a bit of waste IMO!

It is not a waste because they were actually using them.
What rule says a room has to have someone sleep in it?

JLou08 · 02/10/2026 20:43

You said they're in their 20s. It's pretty normal to buy a house to accommodate your children before you have them. Who wants to be moving during pregnancy or with young DC?
Even if they don't want children they can buy whatever house they want.

Decorhate · 02/10/2026 20:44

What an odd post. If they are in their late 20s they are very possibly planning to start a family soon. They may need a live in nanny depending on their jobs. Their extended family may live far away so they need guest rooms for when they visit

At the end of the day it's none of your business. Who made you in charge of housing allocations?

If it’s not a council property I don’t see how it’s selfish.

They wouldnt get a 5 bed council house. In fact they probably wouldnt qualify for any social housing unless disabled and even then they might be waiting years

BammBamm · 02/10/2026 20:45

I think first time buyers are just skipping the usual first and second properties and going straight to larger homes if they can afford it. We lost out to a house once, as although our offer was higher, they were chain free and this is what the estate agent told me and it makes sense. They may (or may not) be planning a family but moving is expensive and a huge amount of stress and upheaval so people are avoiding it where they can.

Oriunda · 02/10/2026 20:45

YABVVU. After our wedding, we bought a large house in DH home town. We’d hoped to fill it with children. Sadly we only managed to have the one, so it’s far too big for us, but it’s still our home, nevertheless.

This couple have every right to buy whatever size house they want, with their money.

Mapleunicorn · 02/10/2026 20:45

You would hate me. I own a 5 bed house. I have a DD but she lives with her dad 50/50 so half the time it is just me!

localnotail · 02/10/2026 20:37

Why is it anyone's business regarding how many bedroom people have? Unless its a council property. Are you aware that there are thousands of second homes in, for example, Mayfair - 4 storey 8 bedroom houses owned by one person - and they use it for a few months a year? These people pay millions for them, and to the staff keeping them clean and ready. What are you proposing to do? Expropriate?

Jesus, when did ‘maybe making it easier for people to downsize if they want to might be a good idea’ become ‘we should forcefully remove property from people’? Clearly not what I said.

Excellent way to miss the point. As you well know. You know absolutely that YOU personally have more than you “need”. You just don’t want your own judgment to apply to you. It’s flawed logic.

We have two home offices (one is an office/library - my dream!) and a games room. All rooms get used regularly so how is that a waste?

I volunteer in a clothes bank. We don't hand out old knickers but companies donate unsold new underwear which we give out to those in need.

One house will only house one family whether it s a 3 bed or a 5 bed and if they need office space or are thinking of increasing their family so what. Anyone else could have bought the house if they wanted to. If you are desperate for a 5 bed house buy one. Or do you expect one free?

I assume you are talking about a property with the couple has paid market price for and owns, and which a family could also have paid market price for and bought?

Exactly this. If the family wanted it, why didn’t they buy it?

Jimmyjumpy · 02/10/2026 20:47

If they bought it then why is it selfish? You are just jealous!

hourglass2 · 02/10/2026 20:47

BendingSpoons · 02/10/2026 20:12

Maybe they are planning lots of kids.
Maybe they already have lots of kids and grandkids who visit.
Maybe they have lots of hobbies that they want space for.
Maybe they have lots of visitors staying.
Maybe they work from home and need office space.
Maybe they just really liked the house.

Exactly! And it's none of the OPs business

InveterateWineDrinker · 02/10/2026 20:47

I imagine they posed as a couple so the vendor would agree the sale... now they're going to market it as either a 'party house' Air BnB or turn it into a HMO without planning permission.

Obviously it is so they can host swinger’s parties, set up a hydroponic grow, install servers to mine bit coin and provide extra workspace for their cats.

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

You sound jealous...

I just think less competition would help so many people. I just fundamentally disagree with having way more space than you need when so many people have fallen on hard times and their kids are living like sardines

SooPee · 02/10/2026 20:50

Perhaps they're planning to open a Brothel?
