AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

Really? This has surely got to be a wind up,?

MidnightPatrol · 02/10/2026 20:06

None of your business…!

People are free to buy the homes they like - if they can afford plenty of space, that’s up to them.

FlippingGiraffe · 02/10/2026 20:06

So you buy it then? Idiotic post.

HelpMebeok · 02/10/2026 20:07

Wow! If they can afford it they can do what they want. None of anyone's business how they spend their money.

Brendayouknowthatyouremuchtoolazy · 02/10/2026 20:07

Presumably all those families had a equal opportunity to buy the house also.

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 02/10/2026 20:07

I assume you are talking about a property with the couple has paid market price for and owns, and which a family could also have paid market price for and bought?

andfinallyhereweare · 02/10/2026 20:07

If it’s not a council property I don’t see how it’s selfish.

Hankunamatata · 02/10/2026 20:07

Because they purchased it?

SpiritAdder · 02/10/2026 20:07

Maybe she’s pregnant with triplets. Maybe they have aging parents who will need to move in. Maybe their adult DCs are boomeranging home with partners and grandkids. Maybe they want to run a B&B.

Totally agree op. Everyone should run all their purchases past you first 🙄

Minasama · 02/10/2026 20:08

Perhaps they want children.

I live in a six bedroomed house and I fully plan to stay in it after our kids grow up. Having lots of space is nice 😀

Morecoffeeneedef · 02/10/2026 20:09

It's hard to find a buyer for a big house these days. That couple living somewhere smaller wouldn't mean that a family would get the 5 bed.

InterviewGhost · 02/10/2026 20:09

LOL what???

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 02/10/2026 20:09

Need the rooms for a weed farm ?
Don't even bother saying it's a council house.

LoughboroughBex · 02/10/2026 20:09

My husband and I have bought a 4 bed house, just the two of us with no children planned. We have our bedroom, an office each and then a guest room. If we did want children then a 5th bedroom would be helpful.

It’s absolutely none of your business though and you’re coming off as jealous.

Perhaps we should’ve bought a 5 bed so our dog could have his own room 🤭

dreamingofgoodhair · 02/10/2026 20:10

There are approximately 1000 reasons why a couple may have bought a 5 bedroom house.

HettyTagliatelli · 02/10/2026 20:10

Families could have bought the house if they’d wanted to.

There is a shortage of decent, smaller properties so child free couples don’t often have much choice.

SunSparkle · 02/10/2026 20:11

we did this. Because we planned for two kids and we need two home offices/spare rooms. Stamp duty makes buying properties every couple of years impossible now so often the advice is to buy the largest home you can stay in the longest for with people getting on the property ladder later and later

AgeingMillennial · 02/10/2026 20:11

I agree with you OP although I can see we are very much in the minority here 😬 but then I find anyone using far more than they need in any sense to be a bit wrong. It’s not that I would ban it, but inwardly I find it a bit cringey when 2 people rattle around a 5 bedroom house with 5 acres, ‘because we need the space’

Sososadaboutmytree · 02/10/2026 20:12

Ooh it's me! Except our house isnt detached so its not me. 1 main bedroom, 1 spare, 1 office, 1 hobby room for DH, 1 as a walk in wardrobe for me. Every single room used.

BendingSpoons · 02/10/2026 20:12

Maybe they are planning lots of kids.
Maybe they already have lots of kids and grandkids who visit.
Maybe they have lots of hobbies that they want space for.
Maybe they have lots of visitors staying.
Maybe they work from home and need office space.
Maybe they just really liked the house.

Smartiepants79 · 02/10/2026 20:12

Presumably this is a privately owned property not social housing?
They can pay for and buy whatever the can afford. There are many possible reasons why they might want that space.
The house was sold on the open market?? Any of these families you speak of could have bought it if they so wished.
Social housing is an entirely different thing.

CremeDeMure · 02/10/2026 20:13

Unless they are being state funded to move in there, it is nothing to do with you.

Do you think couples should move house when their kids grow up ane leave home?

Maybe they plan to have kids? Or have big house parties. Or both work from home and have home office each? Or a hobby room each? Any number of reasons that are still none of your business.

AgeingMillennial · 02/10/2026 20:13

They wouldn’t if they couldn’t afford it; and a lot of competition for properties means the price will inevitably go up. It’s a shame because where I grew up a lot of big families lived in nice family homes, now they’re all in 2/3 beds while elderly couples live in the houses meant for big families (and struggle with them).

Sorry there is me and DH in our new house, I need one room to use as a wardrobe, one for my Lego collection, an office for him, our bedroom and the guest room. The dining room is going to be the room for then ten cats we are moving in with.
