AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

OP posts:

@activedough

They sound sensible!! If they can afford to buy a home that’ll last them a few decades without moving again, that’s a very good idea!

user1492757084 · 04/10/2026 08:23

Their choice if they paid for it.
Can each have an office.
Can let two rooms out to a lodger.
Can have family to stay.
Can be a long term investment to pay off while they are young.

TheRealSmurfette · 04/10/2026 08:24

I think someone like Elon Musk is selfish. Having bazillions and not doing anything positive for the world.
Not a young couple buying a house.
Get over it OP. Seriously.

They look like they’re in their late 20s so I very much doubt they have adult kids boomeranging!!

Well maybe they are planning for a future because they are an age where they may start a family.

Thing is nobody should be imagining this 5 bed house to be a mansion, there are 5 bed new builds and the rooms are all small! My partner and now live in a 4 bed detached House that was converted by previous owners from a 3 bed, the resulting box room is now an office, I have a room with gym equipment in and two bedrooms.
People don't just buy based on bedrooms either, I moved to a lovely area in 2024 to get away from noisy neighbours and noisy main roads so people will buy houses based on area as much as anything else.

At the end of the day nobody is going to allow their property to go up for sale for a lower figure than it's worth and stop anybody viewing it that's not a family with kids at home! It's no fun having a house on the market, people just want it sold so they can move on, they aren't going to turn down offers just because it's not somebody with kids. I never lived in a 5 bed house as a kid in a family of 4 either!

I agree with you OP although I can see we are very much in the minority here 😬 but then I find anyone using far more than they need in any sense to be a bit wrong. It’s not that I would ban it, but inwardly I find it a bit cringey when 2 people rattle around a 5 bedroom house with 5 acres, ‘because we need the space’

My partner and I are child free by choice and we climbed the property ladder and got ourselves a 4 bed detached House in 2024 - it was a 3 bed that someone converted so lots of bedrooms doesn't mean they are necessarily big rooms either. But the point is, my house was on the market about 6 months before we put an offer on it, there's a house on our street that's been up for sale for about 6 months, he is asking a bit much for it but none of us are sat at the estate agents waiting to steal the bigger houses the second they've come on the market, families have had months to put offers in. We sold a 3 bed semi to move here and it was ideal for good schools and it still took us 4 months to sell it and yeah went to a grown man and his mum to get a first mortgage together.

TiggyTomCat · 04/10/2026 08:46

We bought a 4 bed house in a cul de sac when we were in our 20's without children. I remember going to a party and a guy quizzed me on it saying it just didn't "add up"... he didn't know and I didn't enlighten him as it was none of his business that we were having fertility issues. After 5 years in that house we had twins. Never assume someone's story.

Mcdhotchoc · 04/10/2026 09:17

Lol.
Invesrment. Space for hobbies, space for visitors.

Tigerthebreadroll · 04/10/2026 09:22

Interested why the OP hasn't been back on her own thread to defend herself. Is she a fully working and paying citizen thinking its about morality and sustainability or about benefits and people using more than they need meaning there is less to benefit from . Speaks of jealousy either way. Plentry of 4 bed plus where I live on sale not selling. It's about affordability

LouH1981 · 04/10/2026 09:27

The day we moved in to our house a very nosy neighbour said exactly this to us! ‘Why do you two need such a big house?’
We were newly married at the time. 12 years, one Labrador and two children later hopefully she’s worked it out 🙄
Not that it was any of her business! We paid for it, end of.

I know a young couple who moved into a five bedroom house when they got married because they intended said house to be their forever home. They didn't see the point in having to move house x number of times.

This is what my neighbours did, they lived with her parents whilst they saved for a deposit, then married and had kids. The house is the same as mine 3 bed with a 4th bedroom /spare on the ground floor, they use that as a play room. I did the same and turned it into a bedroom eventually so my 3 kids could have a bedroom each. Neighbours have said its their forever home and were actually openly upset when I said I may downsize as they hate the thought of new neighbours they dont like replacing me bless em.

My mother in law has downsized from a 4 bed house to a 3 bed bungalow recently, just her now. Her daughter and family emigrated years ago and so her family stay with mother in law when they visit, as do their now grown up children and great grandchildren. By this posters logic the mother in law is incredibly selfish having a 3 bed bungalow but she spends a lot of time having over night visitors.

Having said all of that, I would have no idea how most of my neighbours use their houses or how many people live in them, because I just wouldn't notice or care. This post is baffling tbh hense my original jokey response of perhaps they're opening a brothel lol

pinkypoo8 · 04/10/2026 09:37

Quite honestly its none of your business. And even if I did think that I probably wouldn't be posting it on mn

ChoppyWalters · 04/10/2026 09:38

There is a particular trait in this country of envy of people who are doing well. I can’t afford a house at all, but good luck to those who can. However many bedrooms and lack of people.

Takeapause · 04/10/2026 00:34

Is it a council house? If it’s a council house then it’s stupid if the council:

If it’s private they can spend their hard earned cash as they want. There are plenty of houses around, it’s all just a question of affordability.

It's never going to be a council house. The very, very rare stock of 5 bed social housing definitely wouldn't be allocated to two people.

Happytaytos · 04/10/2026 10:13

Late 20s, so prime time for starting a family.

OP you're crazy.

I believe the original poster. A couple I know in their 60s moved into a 5 bedroom very large property.

Good for them!

I’m sure they’ll all be devastated that you find their choices cringey.

Madmanc · 04/10/2026 10:41

Just DH & I but decorated rooms for our grandchildren who stay frequently plus guest room.
if anyone queries why I had a big house I would say WTF has it got to do with you!😂😂😂

They can buy what they want

AbraCaStabYa · 04/10/2026 14:24

I don't think this went the way you intended 😂

AbraCaStabYa · 04/10/2026 14:26

Minasama · 02/10/2026 20:08

Perhaps they want children.

I live in a six bedroomed house and I fully plan to stay in it after our kids grow up. Having lots of space is nice 😀

Or they don't, like us. Plenty of things people need spare rooms for, gym, home office, studio, guest room for parents, etc etc

user1476613140 · 04/10/2026 14:39

It makes complete sense. If they plan more than 3 children then they don't need to move house again. They're all sorted.

I’m no fan of Elon Musk but a quick google suggests he’s donated $8.5 bn dollars to charitable causes.

MadKittenWoman · 04/10/2026 15:55

We have a 5 bed house with a connected basement flat. One DS who now lives in London. We use one bedroom, another is our son’s when he visits, one was my office when I was self-employed as is now a craft room, one was DH’s study before he retired and is still his to listen to music or faff on his computers and the smallest one is my dressing room and clothes storage. We rent the basement out but DS lived in it a couple of times. It’s none of your business why people want lots of rooms. Our next door neighbour lives in virtually the same house by herself.

MightyCarrot · 04/10/2026 15:59

Maybe OP knows me?

I live in a 5 bed detached house with my DH.

I know people judge us, it's not nice.
