AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

Haha hello person with divergent views from mine (that’s ok!!). Never said I was a judge - that’s your projection most likely. I’m just a citizen with an opinion/value judgment (also ok!) around over-consumption and greed. And to answer your other question with a question, do you think we live in a healthy society and do you feel positive about the long term future?

Overconsumption in every way is killing the planet. Yes, I can say that as I haven’t taken a flight in many years, don’t own a car and buy very consciously. It’s easy to excuse yourself as ‘just 1 person’ but the ocean is made of drops and it’s pointless being outraged by inaction on climate and sustainability if you won’t do your bit 🤷‍♀️

Sunbringer · 03/10/2026 21:03

Also my parents are just them two in a four bed. They like the spare bedrooms for when their grandchildren or children come to visit. Hardly difficult to understand.

If the families wanted those houses they should’ve bought them.

PinkMagpie · 03/10/2026 21:03

@wherethewaterisdarker nationalise the housing stock, essentially?

AgeingMillennial · 03/10/2026 21:04

PinkMagpie · 03/10/2026 21:03

@wherethewaterisdarker do you think society could be made healthier if we were told what we were allowed to buy based on how many people were occupying?

I think we may have to. We’re reaching a point where personal freedoms can no longer take precedence over sustainability.

PinkMagpie · 03/10/2026 21:06

@AgeingMillennial do you foresee any adverse economic effects of that policy?

I couldn’t agree more OP. I see it as an extreme example of how our greed and grabbiness and generally taking waaaay more than we need has absolutely destroyed us as a healthy society (not to mention a healthy planet). I couldn’t roll my eyes back further in my head at anyone defending a couple living in a five bed house and would assume we shared a radically different value system.

There’s no shortage of five bed houses. Can you tell us some areas that have a shortage, so we’re better informed.

It wouldn’t be a policy. I just think individualism and capitalism are killing the UK (and most of the west) and we will hopefully naturally move away from them. People need to take responsibility for not overconsuming.

Where would it end?
A childless couple not allowed to buy anything bigger than a 2 seater car? Not allowed to buy a family sized lasagne?

I know you’re trying to make light of it but you should seriously engage with the topic if you actually want to argue it.

Killing the UK and the West how?

This place is weird at times.
Many posts on multiple threads about how it is selfish to have more than 2 kids.
So who is rightfully allowed to live in 4/5 bed houses? Because not filling every room with a kid is selfish, yet having the kids to fill those rooms is selfish too. Arg!

This thread is a piss take and the epitome of how bizarre some people are about things that do not affect them.

Mad isn’t it. There’s an abundance of five plus bed houses on the market on Rightmove. No one who can afford to buy a big house is being deprived of the opportunity.

I thought your lasagne comment was funny 😁

According to a PP, there are families living in Air BNBs because selfish couples are hogging big houses.
I really do not think so.

That’s bollocks isn’t it. If they can afford a five bed house they can’t possibly be otherwise almost homeless.

tothemoonandback345 · 03/10/2026 21:23

We sold up our home on a large block of land and ‘downsized’ to a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom high rise apartment.
We still need the 3 bedrooms as both our son, dtr and their families live hundreds of miles away.
They come to stay often and there is no way we could have them all sleep at our apartment if we didn’t have those extra rooms.

Also as we now live on the coast our friends from here and overseas are always welcome to come stay with us.

OP - Surely if folks are buying their own homes they are entitled to have as many spare bedrooms as they want. It’s not as if they are taking up a large rented Council house that someone else might need.

Its all about living in a democratic society where folks have freedom of choice.

JadeMonkey · 03/10/2026 21:27

Maybe they’re buying a family house to grow into? Maybe they’re planning on having housemates till kids come along? Maybe they’ve got a lot of exotic pets? Maybe they just want a nice big house? None of these things are selfish.

WhatNextImScared · 03/10/2026 21:32

I was going to say YANBU until I saw they were in their twenties. Every chance they are planning to have 3 or 4 kids.

Bubbles90 · 03/10/2026 21:38

It's not actually any of your business is it.

Do you always make such moronic queries, or is today a special day?

Why would there be a problem if they are older?

Do you really want to live in an economy that polices who can buy houses?

Capitalism is killing the UK? Ok, what would you prefer? Communism? That hasn’t been widely successful elsewhere…..
