AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

We live in a 6 bed house and there's just 3 of us. I wanted two guest bedrooms, one bedroom as an office, and one as a games room (a very small bedroom I might add). We don't need any of it, but we could afford it and wanted it.

What's the problem?

Elfie1976 · 03/10/2026 23:58

I think the only mistake they’ve made is living near you ….

covilha · 04/10/2026 00:07

So, what do you suggest?
They obviously work hard to afford it so pay a load of taxes.
In view of the fact that they are thriving therefore do you think they should buy it then let a struggling family line in it rent free?
what I find selfish currently is the level of sheer joblessness verging on destruction with which this country seems to respond to it’s citizens success.
its as though they are determined to destroy the economy by making that which was previously obtainable with graft inaccessible.
i find the begrudging of others success selfish, not just because the jealousy poisons the lives of those it’s aimed at but its toxicity poisons the environment that creates success to the point that it becomes unobtainable for most ordinary people

Should they donate that house to a family or if it’s on rent, downsize and supplement a family’s rent from their saved rent? Because I am guessing they didn’t stop another family to rent that place.

Notbridezilla · 04/10/2026 00:15

😂😂😂😂

Tbh posts like this are the reason I’m super glad to live in the kind of street where we don’t know or ever speak to our neighbours. You’d think we’re selfish too OP. My DH and I are childfree by choice and recently moved into a 4 bed house. That means our room, our study, and 2 guest rooms (we both have a lot of family who don’t live locally and wanted space for them to be able to visit/stay for a few days in comfort).

You need to find something else to occupy your time OP.

Eigen · 04/10/2026 00:25

I did this. The Edwardian houses with driveways and decent gardens in zone 3 tend to be 5 bed semis.

Two bedrooms are offices, one is my dressing room, and it’s so nice being able to sleep 10 people and nearly everyone has a proper bed. Two living rooms as well, one with room for a baby grand and one which has the TV in it.

I agree with you OP although I can see we are very much in the minority here 😬 but then I find anyone using far more than they need in any sense to be a bit wrong. It’s not that I would ban it, but inwardly I find it a bit cringey when 2 people rattle around a 5 bedroom house with 5 acres, ‘because we need the space’

But maybe that couple thinks by not having children they are helping the environment. Does it then even out their negative impact on the society?

What is wrong with 5 acres anyway?
I know a couple who have land... land is not for kids. It is for animals. They have horses.

Takeapause · 04/10/2026 00:34

Is it a council house? If it’s a council house then it’s stupid if the council:

If it’s private they can spend their hard earned cash as they want. There are plenty of houses around, it’s all just a question of affordability.

OpenGoose · 04/10/2026 00:59

We just bought a 2600 (3400 with garages and outdoor buildings) sqft house with 5 acres just because we like the space. It's just me and my husband. It doesn't feel excessively big, one living room will be an office and 2/4 of the bedrooms will be for my aquarium hobby and the other a room for our cats 😀3/5 of the acres will be a little wildlife area.

I'm coming from an 800sqft terrace and felt horribly cramped but there are people on my street with 3+ kids and I find it horribly irresponsible. Large families aren't entitled to a house just because they chose to have children. There are plenty of big houses out there, they should work on affording them before having children if they feel cramped in a smaller house.

They wouldn’t if they couldn’t afford it; and a lot of competition for properties means the price will inevitably go up. It’s a shame because where I grew up a lot of big families lived in nice family homes, now they’re all in 2/3 beds while elderly couples live in the houses meant for big families (and struggle with them).

We are not living in a socialist country or a country where state decides where you live. It’s free market. You made an ageist comment. I am also millennial but grew up living close to my grandparents, so I am not allergic to elderly people like many of millennials like you.

As people grow old, life in general becomes harder in many ways, health and social isolation are the biggest issues. So let them live their lives comfortably and in a way it makes them happy: Maybe they worked hard to get that home. They may have their children, grandchildren visiting and spend time there. Even if that’s not the case, it’s a free country. If we lived in a world, people care for their elderly neighbours, visited them every evening to have a chit chat and check how they are doing, perhaps then it would have been okay to expect them to be so thoughtful to worry about housing market inflating and make sacrifices for random people. But that’s not the case.

You problem should be with random foreigners who don’t even live in the country and only buy properties for investments or run Airbnbs.

Your point about grandchildren is a good one.

One of my cousins has a large house so that she can help out with the grandchildren. She's had a wet room fitted so that she can give respite to a family member caring for a child in a wheelchair.

I reckon they are both in a rock band. 2 of the rooms are going set up for rehearsal, a huge drum kit, electric guitars with 100w Marshall Stacks, and a bass rig that goes to the ceiling. Maybe they'll put small gigs on there too.

FFSItsTooHot · 04/10/2026 01:46

If they have the money to buy it,what's it got to do with you anyone else?

ElectricLegs · 04/10/2026 01:50

It's going to be a drug rehab centre?

AlansFiveBedroomBastardHouse · 04/10/2026 02:04

No, this wouldn’t bother me. Everyone should be entitled to enough room to swing a cat (or a tiger… You wouldn’t want to though, not unless it’d been stunned. Even then, it’d weigh the best part of a tonne).

Itsalmost2027 · 04/10/2026 02:42

I just realised how selfish I am… I bought a 5 seater car for myself and I should have brought a motorbike as me buying that car means that all those families of 5 are missing out!

Bubblesoffun · 04/10/2026 03:06

Bought, not brought.

ThatLemonBee · 04/10/2026 05:00

Maybe they bought it as their forever home and want a large family ?

ThatLemonBee · 04/10/2026 05:03

We live in a house with 3 living rooms , 4 if you count the observatory a kitchen with breakfast room and 6 bedrooms and a converted very large attic room . We are a family of 6 , so according to you we are selfish

Tanjamaltija · 04/10/2026 05:24

Did they ask you to pay their W&E bill, or do their chores for free? For all you know, they are turning 2 of the rooms into separate offices, or they will eb havbing guests / relatives in to visit. And even if not... it is not a concern of yours, because the couples stuggling to find homes may or may not be able to pay for a similar one to theirs.

SquashPenguin · 04/10/2026 07:14

Wow jealous much?!

We bought a five bed house as a childless couple. It also has three reception rooms. We had to beat off all the four child families queuing up out the door when we viewed it though. I mean it had been on the market for nearly a year, they had their chance…..

Just when you think you’ve read it all on mumsnet and think it can’t get more ridiculous, it does.

Chickadee001 · 04/10/2026 08:19

If they've bought or are renting it's their own business, can't see a local authority or housing association doing this - if they have there must be a reason!

Here is a radical idea …. Mind your own business. People have reasons for needing extra space - working from home, hobby space, room for future children they might have…. The list goes on.
