AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

I bought some food today, just checking this was ok???

FOOD?! For YOURSELF?! I genuinely don't know how you can sleep at night.

I hope you’re prepared to explain yourself at The Hague, because frankly this level of unchecked personal consumption cannot continue.

YANBU. A couple with NO CHILDREN living in a FIVE BEDROOM HOUSE? I’ve contacted the council, my MP and, frankly, the Archbishop.

One room is apparently a “study”, another a “guest room” and another is for “storage”.

STORAGE?!

I think childless couples should be legally restricted to one bedroom and a communal cupboard for coats. If they have guests, the guests can sleep in the bath.

Five bedrooms between two people. Frankly, I hope they enjoy mowing that garden while knowing somewhere a family of six is crying into a Greggs sausage roll.

Selfish doesn't even begin to cover it.

🤣

All the houses on my little road have 6 bedrooms and we’re the only ones with children. The rest are all inhabited by older couples. The only thing I think is how I really couldn’t be arsed to clean all those rooms when no one was even in them!

Well if they’re in their late 20s clearly they may plan on having children at some point and don’t want to move again so bought a large enough house for when they begin to have a family. Seriously get a life instead of watching a couple buy a 5 bed house and then going online to moan about it.

Exactly…DD has done just that. Bought a large house so that they do not have to move again with a growing family and go through all the stamp duty and fees again.
We have also decided not to move out of our large house as moving would cost us £100000 in stamp duty so no incentive to move. We’re in the SE so any move is going to cost.

I expect you’d soon have something to say if it became an HMO too! And yet that is the most efficient way of housing people. Maybe you should mind your own business.

JustAnotherWhinger · 03/10/2026 20:29

You sound like one of my DSS’s new neighbours. Nosy to the point of rudeness about he and his other half could afford their new house at their age and why they need so much space.

Been strangely quiet since they told her they met at a club for children who’d lost a parent young - both lost their mothers very young, DSS wasn’t even 2 - and “selfishly” spent the inheritance/insurance money they both got on a house they plan to live in forever. They both WFH and plan children.

PinkMagpie · 03/10/2026 20:32

Anyone who asks how I afford my house gets told I live on the proceeds of crime. I don’t of course, but it gives them something to talk about

ByHeartyHiker · 03/10/2026 20:33

Or sensible to buy a forever home and avoid paying 2 lots of stamp duty, 2 extra legal bills, another removals fee and estate agents commission if they bought small now and had to move again later if expanding their family

Lunchtimehelp · 03/10/2026 20:34

Good for them.

I even bought more for than one day and then decided to go mad and buy 2 cartons of yoghurt - I mean was clearly going to hell anyway !!

You've probably exceeded your square-foot per person quota

Air will be re-instated once you move to a bedsit under the stairs

sweetpickle2 · 03/10/2026 20:45

My DH and I live in a five bedroom house- we each have an office, we have a designated spare room, and I have a walk in wardrobe. No children (and no plans for any) but my shoes need lots of space 😀

Yourcatisnotsorry · 03/10/2026 20:50

We bought a 5 bed aged 28 with no kids. 15 years later still here with 3 kids. Ever heard of forward planning?

I couldn’t agree more OP. I see it as an extreme example of how our greed and grabbiness and generally taking waaaay more than we need has absolutely destroyed us as a healthy society (not to mention a healthy planet). I couldn’t roll my eyes back further in my head at anyone defending a couple living in a five bed house and would assume we shared a radically different value system.

Why are you the judge of what people should buy?

And in what way has it destroyed us as a healthy society?

riceuten · 03/10/2026 20:53

I assume there should be some kind of law disallowing childless couples from buying anything other than a lean to in the nastiest part of town.

People that have more bedrooms than people tend to use those rooms. Either as home office if WFH, a craft room, a home gym.
I doubt a couple with 4 extra bedrooms is just leaving them empty and bare. They are using them... just not to sleep in.
Many small businesses are ran from people's homes, or started at home before they expanded into a workshop/shop/big office.

And as been said several times, there is not a shortage of 5 bed homes. Many are on the market for a long time. Anyone is free to buy them.

Yes but they’re the same people who think homeless people should be in Buckingham Palace, nobody should fly via private jet and that everyone should share their earnings to support a generous benefit system etc 🥱

YAB(unbelievably and incredibly)U!!

If they can afford to buy it or rent it privately, then it's entirely up to them whether they do so or not! I'm a single woman living on my own and if I could I'd be buying a 4 or 5 bedroom house because I have a LOT of hobbies and would like the room. What other people do with their money is none of your GD business! Hope you feel better with all the attention your ridiculous post has garnered you....

Haha hello person with divergent views from mine (that’s ok!!). Never said I was a judge - that’s your projection most likely. I’m just a citizen with an opinion/value judgment (also ok!) around over-consumption and greed. And to answer your other question with a question, do you think we live in a healthy society and do you feel positive about the long term future?

Sunbringer · 03/10/2026 21:02

We’re a couple in a 5 bed. We plan to become more than two people though this magical thing called reproduction. You see the birds and the bees…

PinkMagpie · 03/10/2026 21:03

@wherethewaterisdarker do you think society could be made healthier if we were told what we were allowed to buy based on how many people were occupying?
