AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

OP posts:

They are paying for it i cant see how it as anything to do with you..
Im single and childless by choice and live in a 2 bed.

AnswerIsNo · 03/10/2026 19:51

I agree, very selfish

They should have bought a camper van, or maybe just a large tent

The moral thing to do would be for them to rent out 3 rooms at bargain basement prices and if they ask for references, they are just entitled

Daftypants · 03/10/2026 19:52

Sometimes you have to buy a house with more bedrooms than you need to have the living space.
Next door neighbours where we last lived had a 4 bed house.
only the 2 of them .
They wanted a decent sized dining kitchen and 2 living areas which any smaller house didn’t have .
Round where we live now a couple in their 50s who have no children are in a large 4 bed house that has 2 living rooms and a large kitchen/ dining room.
They have a bedroom each for better quality sleep , a guest bedroom and another bedroom is an office for one of them .
Downstairs the 2nd living room is another study / office since both work from home some days

Dear Lord, not a conservatory too? I was on the fence till you mentioned that. Evict the greedy bastards!

exactly, you can squeeze an entire family in that conservatory - sleeping bags, camping mats, cassette toilet and drink the water from the roof gullies, or find a local stream

get a catapult for the squirrels and that's breakfast, dinner and tea

OP you are very confused as to how house buying works 🤣

Do you think we get allocated bedrooms based on need?

None of your beeswax. Are you a curtain-twitcher?

Some people really missed the Covid lockdowns, and it shows.

Really? This has surely got to be a wind up,?

Yep, definitely attention seeking. Strange....

PinkMagpie · 03/10/2026 20:02

You’d lose your mind over me OP. DP and I are in a 7 bed

They look like they’re in their late 20s so I very much doubt they have adult kids boomeranging!!

If they're in their 20s hasn't it occurred to you they might want children soon and are just buying the "family home" in advance?

Having said that my child-free brother and his wife (who aren't having children) have a 5 bed house and the biggest house of the siblings (who do have kids). However they're in the country, like hosting big family gatherings and friends, they both have their own big office for WFH and a nice big garden for the dogs and are just enjoying the countryside and space.

They didn't buy the house out of spite, they had a tiny house (that you would have approved of) for most of their marriage and then because of promotions etc got a 3000sqft house when they hit middle age.

We're a family of 3 but I would also be able to fill a house that size and make use of it if we won the lottery or we got mega promotions. (I'd love a dedicated art studio and a games room!)

Whatinthedoopla · 03/10/2026 20:04

You know homes aren't actually selling at the moment as much as they should be....

yummyscummymummy01 · 03/10/2026 20:07

Something like 65% of privately owned property is under occupied by two bedrooms or more. It is an issue and when stamp duty is eventually addressed hopefully they’ll be a bit more movement in the market, but they’ll always be people who can afford it anyway and I’m not in favour of stopping people buying what they want.

hoxtonbabe · 03/10/2026 20:07

This is the most bizarre post I’ve seen this year. If they can afford it, why not? I don’t see how it’s anyone’s business or how anyone can be so nosey to care.

I have a neighbor 3 doors down either side, both have 3 storey Edwardian houses 4/5 bedrooms one of the couples moved in about 10 years ago, have never had children and won’t considering they are both early 60s and the other are a young couple moved in about 4 years ago and probably purchased with long term family plans. The older couple aren’t even living there half the time as they also have a house in Cornwall they also go to.

Good on them if they can afford it, it’s not as if they are taking away from social housing where 3+ bedrooms are difficult to get, so if you are a single person or a family on 10 and you want to buy a 1 bed or 10 bedroom house then mazel to you I say!

At that age I’d assume they are planning a family. With stamp duty being what it is, it’s sensible to minimise the number of moves so if they’ve been able to afford a large forever home, why wouldn’t they?

maxslice · 03/10/2026 20:10

It’s really none of your business. There are people like this in my neighbourhood too. I don’t get it, but I assume they have their reasons. Maybe they each have a home office, an exercise area, and a guest room. Maybe they’re breeding guinea pigs, maybe they plan to have children or to host exchange students, or to have live in help.

But as in your case, it’s not my business.

dh280125 · 03/10/2026 20:11

Are you joking? At one point I was one person with five beds and five baths. Should I have moved into a studio?

Sueandthegoldfish · 03/10/2026 20:13

I live alone in a four double bedroom Victorian end terrace. I am divorced and my children are adults. Shall I move out?

teacupmadam · 03/10/2026 20:14

YANBU. A couple with NO CHILDREN living in a FIVE BEDROOM HOUSE? I’ve contacted the council, my MP and, frankly, the Archbishop.

One room is apparently a “study”, another a “guest room” and another is for “storage”.

STORAGE?!

I think childless couples should be legally restricted to one bedroom and a communal cupboard for coats. If they have guests, the guests can sleep in the bath.

Five bedrooms between two people. Frankly, I hope they enjoy mowing that garden while knowing somewhere a family of six is crying into a Greggs sausage roll.

Selfish doesn't even begin to cover it.

It's absolutely none of your business.

MarriedTwiceOneGrownUpDaughter · 03/10/2026 20:14

Maybe they're swingers and intend to hold orgies. Be nice and they might send you an invite!

teacupmadam · 03/10/2026 20:17

activedough · 02/10/2026 20:24

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

I completely agree. Five bedrooms for two people?! Absolutely, utterly obscene.

I lived in a one-bedroom flat with 17 children, 4 Labradors and a retired traffic warden. We sleep in shifts. I haven’t seen the floor since 2019.
And you know what? We were lucky.

My parents brought me up in a shoebox in a canal. Sixteen of us shared the lid. We considered ourselves extremely privileged because the shoebox had a corner.

Kids today expect bedrooms. Bedrooms! We used to dream of having a cupboard.

And don’t get me started on people with TWO bathrooms. What do they think they are, the royal family?

Cadeaukatze · 03/10/2026 20:19

AgeingMillennial · 02/10/2026 20:11

I agree with you OP although I can see we are very much in the minority here 😬 but then I find anyone using far more than they need in any sense to be a bit wrong. It’s not that I would ban it, but inwardly I find it a bit cringey when 2 people rattle around a 5 bedroom house with 5 acres, ‘because we need the space’

Same here.

And OP, you'll probably find they have a second home somewhere too. (edited - perhaps not, if they are in their late 20s - maybe she is genuinely pregnant with triplets!)

But even worse to me is when people buy a 2 bed house and turn it into a 4 bed house. Yes I know they can. I know the council has allowed it. But it makes no sense to make what was an affordable home into an expensive one.

Mind you, a 5 bed house would be good for DH and me. We have a boomerang son back from uni - and loads of books! A room for Lego wouldn't go amiss either.

But just because you can and because you afford it doesn't make it morally right when we're concreting over the countryside. But then people don't care. They soon forget about our over-hot summer and book their ski-ing holidays and buy their next SUV.

Totally agree op. Everyone should run all their purchases past you first 🙄

🤣

amraa · 03/10/2026 20:21

Well if they’re in their late 20s clearly they may plan on having children at some point and don’t want to move again so bought a large enough house for when they begin to have a family. Seriously get a life instead of watching a couple buy a 5 bed house and then going online to moan about it.
