AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

Bedroom each (they might have medical issues or snore or just like a peaceful sleep), office each and a guest room. Doesn't seem out of order if they can afford it.

Who are you to be judgemental? They may be planning a large family. Working from home, looking after family

Kayleighfish · 03/10/2026 19:06

Someone in front of me bought the last two sausage rolls in Greggs last week.

Bugbognor · 03/10/2026 19:09

if it’s social housing you might have a point. But if it’s a private purchase they can spend their money however they want to and do not need your permission.

If they buy a 7 seater SUV will you be complaining her that they only need 2 seats?

Go and find something better to be bitchy about that you might get some more support for here.

That’s actually traumatic though!

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 03/10/2026 19:11

Who do you think they should give it to? How will they decide who is deserving enough to have the house they have worked for and paid for.
Fortunately in this country we are still allowed to do what we like with our own money - what little the government leaves us with of course.

I live alone in a 3 bed , bought with my own money, does that make me selfish too ?

Me too!! I'd have been happy with a two bedroom but in my town a lot of smallish terraces come with extra attic rooms. I'm very happy with my three bedrooms and two bathrooms!!

Pogue4Life · 03/10/2026 19:14

Are you being serious??? What’s it got to do with you what they spend their money on. Surely you didn’t put any money towards buying the house or their solicitor fees or the surveys they’ve had done.

They look like they’re in their late 20s so I very much doubt they have adult kids boomeranging!!

If they're late 20's then they are probably planning on a family and getting their housing situation sorted ready. Very sensible really.

We moved from our tiny mid-terrace to our 5 bed (albeit 1 room is so small it could barely be a nursery let alone an actual bedroom) when we were actively trying to start a family. We knew we didnt want to move when pregnant or with a newborn so we cracked on with it. Got pregnant about 6 months after we moved in.

Now you'd probably judge us for being a 1 child family in a 5 bed house, but we regularly have guests and we had hoped to have more children but it didnt work out that way. We also anticipate a parent moving in long term so the extra space will be needed.

They aren't doing anything wrong by buying a larger house and I really think you avoidakkng judgments on other people's choices.

My beautiful, childhood home, which is a five bedroom, farmhouse (complete with out buildings, that have the potential to be made into separate living areas), as well as some land, was bought by a lovely gay couple, in their thirties.
They were very clear that children were not in their future.
However, they adored animals, and wanted to make use the other grounds for growing their own food, chickens. beekeeping, and adding to their four legged friend family.
Both men were very handy, and clearly enjoyed handy work, and serious gardening. From the onset, they were planned for the house to be their forever home, and already had drawn up plans for both sets of parents to be able to live there,
My previous house, seemed to be one of those places, as my parents spent 40+ years there, as did the the previous owners.
Children are not the only reason to have a large home! Also, I have known families with 4-5 kids, and the minute they hit adulthood, they emigrate or choose never to return.
I was just so pleased to sell to someone who came across as loving my home like I did, no Air BnB plans or turning the outbuildings into glorified holiday lets/ or some big agency deciding to by up the whole thing and parcel all the bits of the farm off separately (which as happened a lot, where I live).
If you work hard, and can afford it, then why the Hell can people not buy what suits them?!

Ohcrap082024 · 03/10/2026 19:24

I’m confused…do you mean a 5 bedroom house that they have paid for with their own money/ mortgage?

Or a 5 bedroom house that they have obtained through the council or housing association through deception?

EmmaJane57 · 03/10/2026 19:25

Has it occurred to you that the two people intend to get busy in the future, making more people to put in the other rooms?

Basically, mind your own. Why they need five rooms is not your concern.

you sound jealous

Single50something · 03/10/2026 19:30

If I was well off I would be tempted to have a much larger house. Only me and child but I wfh and have a business. He has hobbies that take up space. A 5 bed would be amazing for us :) plus the downstairs foot print that much bigger too. If can do it..do it..and you dont know id they wfh or run a business or have a gym or large lego collection etc :)

TunnocksOrDeath · 03/10/2026 19:30

Firstly it’s none of your business.
Secondly, it’s unusual to find a house with a lot of kitchen utility & reception-room space that a well-off couple might want that doesn’t come with several bedrooms. If they both wfh they might even want 2 studies.

If it’s not a council property I don’t see how it’s selfish.

And it won't be a council property or it wouldn't have been given to a couple without kids...

I actually agree. Because of the pressure on houses, it's a real problem. It didn't used to be the case but it is now unfortunately.

What pressure on five bedroom houses? Can you explain your comment more please?

You agree it’s selfish for someone to buy a five bedroom house if they don’t have X amount of children? As I understand the private housing market demand for five bedroom houses is much lower than for smaller homes. If you bared single people and smaller families from buying these houses how would that help?

DanNW2025 · 03/10/2026 19:36

Ha ha socialism at its finest. They might have two offices and a laundry room. Give ya head a wobble

DangerousLesions · 03/10/2026 19:42

None of your beeswax. Are you a curtain-twitcher?

JerryGiraffe · 03/10/2026 19:43

Perhaps they enjoy entertaining? Perhaps they're planning a big family? What's a definite is that it really isn't any of your business, comparison is the theory of joy, and jealousy is mighty ugly

YABU. Evidently they make use of the space. My friend is a single woman, no children who recently purchased a 4 bedroom house and she makes use of the full house. She can afford it and needs the space.

junecat · 03/10/2026 19:44

We have five beds. Just me and my husband, no kids.

we each have an office and we have a yoga / mini gym room.

it had been on the market for a year before we bought it 🤷🏽‍♀️

Ally886 · 03/10/2026 19:45

Maybe if they didn't have kids they could afford a 5 bed eh?

stample · 03/10/2026 19:47

Good lord it doesn’t really matter. I actually rent a 5 bed but we are a family of four, our landlord did ask us if it was too big, but at the end of the day we are good tenants, they get their money, it doesn’t matter. One bed is a spare, the other a home gym btw…

Is that why 9 houses over two recently finished new build estates near me sit unsold?

Both 4 and 5 beds that are not selling. Kind of contradicts the pressure you mention no?
