AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

They look like they’re in their late 20s so I very much doubt they have adult kids boomeranging!!

Maybe they're planning on having children and didn't want to waste money on a starter home and stamp duty and moving costs and had lived with their parents so long they could jump to their forever home without having to move again.

And maybe it's none of your business what other people do with their money.

Then the family needing 5 bedrooms should have bought it.

Assuming they paid the going market rate, I can't see how that's of any concern or interest of yours?

Could be any number of reasons why they want a large home.

  • Both planning on working from home, and want separate office spaces.
  • Both have hobbies that require space/storage of resources.
  • Perhaps they're empty nesters planning for a haul of future grandkids.
  • Perhaps they want children in the future.
  • Perhaps they're thinking of fostering/adopting.
  • Perhaps there's aging parents who they want to move in.
  • Perhaps they just wanted a house to "grow into".

Honestly, none of your business.

Abustedflush · 03/10/2026 18:23

So a young couple, who can afford a 5 bed house, maybe both working from home most of the week, so need some office space, and possibly planning on having children in the future have secured their ‘forever’ home?
Well done to them.

Jealousy, pure and simple, get a job, get plenty of overtime in and buy your own big hse… absolutely pathetic..

WalmartWitney · 03/10/2026 18:35

Who are you to tell people what sized homes they should have. Get over yourself. Talk about entitled.

Sheepsmellnice · 03/10/2026 18:38

Why is it any of your business?

Cielovista · 03/10/2026 18:39

Five bedrooms for one couple is ok - maybe they work from home or are planning a family..
What is less understandable is the royal family who have numerous multi-bedroomed palaces most of which they don't even live in!

I live alone and I bought a four bedroom house. I have one bedroom for sleeping, one for crafts, one for my dressing room/guest room and one guest room. Do I need 4 bedrooms? Probably not, but I want downstairs space- large kitchen diner/ utility room/ loo/ sitting room. Or should single people or couples be consigned to live in poky places? If I could have three bedrooms and the same downstairs space I’d consider it.

I live alone in a 5 bedroom house. There are plenty of five bedroom houses available in my town . No one wants them.
I live ina dormer bungalow and don't use the two upstairs bedrooms because of disability.
I would be happy with a two bedroom bungalow but there aren't any round here.

Yes.

It's none of your business what they do with it, or their lives.

YankSplaining · 03/10/2026 18:42

They’re in their twenties. They’re probably intending to have kids. This is a nothingburger.

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

Dear Lord, not a conservatory too? I was on the fence till you mentioned that. Evict the greedy bastards!

ChequerToRed · 03/10/2026 18:44

If I can somehow drum up the cash there’s an 8 bed house on the market I want. I’ll lose three of the bedrooms to en suite conversions and a dressing room. It also has a 30ft formal drawing room and a galleried double hight hall.
There’s only three of us.

Bikergran · 03/10/2026 18:45

Unless it's a council house, anyone can move into any house of any style and size they want. If those "families struggling to find a house" could afford that house, they would be in there.

My husband and I have bought a 4 bed house, just the two of us with no children planned. We have our bedroom, an office each and then a guest room. If we did want children then a 5th bedroom would be helpful.

It’s absolutely none of your business though and you’re coming off as jealous.

Perhaps we should’ve bought a 5 bed so our dog could have his own room 🤭

Edited

lol! We have a 5 bed in south London! Slight after bit and it was just the three of us! Husband, and I and the dog… dog had/has her own room! Our children came 10 years after we bought the house, they have their own rooms here which they use when they are not at school!

I've always hankered after a galleried landing!

It's possible they both work from home and plan to have a couple of kids but whether that's true or not it is no one's business. I didn't know people thought about this stuff.

I live in a house which is 'too big' for me. I was planning to donwnsize when my son went to uni but I am now waiting until he has properly left home. When I bought the house 17 years ago, I was married and we coverted the garage and my mum came to live with us so we filled it up. After she died, we used the conversion as a home office for my ex. It is now my office as I WFH. All the rooms are used to a greater or lesser extent. Anyone who thinks I am selfish for living here and not moving sooner to somewhere smaller can fuck off. This is our home and it isn't like there is a shortage of houses for families to buy.

iloveanearlynight · 03/10/2026 18:52

I actually agree. Because of the pressure on houses, it's a real problem. It didn't used to be the case but it is now unfortunately.

Yeah, the first house we bought was a 4 bed/3 reception rooms. No kids at the time. We’d been living abroad for a few years and when we came home had saved a good deposit. We were planning kids so there was no point buying a starter home, as we’d only need to move again.
We now have 3 kids in that same house.

The pressure is mainly on smaller, cheaper house, not 5 beds.

Retired65 · 03/10/2026 18:56

We live in a four bedroom house, there are only two of us. The bedrooms are quite small, one is used as a study, one as a hobby room and the other one is a guest bedroom.

Iamgettingolderandgrumpier · 03/10/2026 18:59

How is this selfish? House was on market. Anyone could have bought it. Not as if they stopped families for offering for it.

Tigerraar · 03/10/2026 19:00

I live in a 5 bedroom house. 6 bedrooms if we're really pushing it. When we moved in we planned to have 2 or 3 kids but it took us five years to conceive and due to our ages and my husband's health we've decided to stop at one. Do we have to move out? What's the cutoff? If you could let me know. Thanks.
