AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

You sound very jealous.
How is it stopping others from buying it? Most people don't have enough money to buy a 5bed.

Gosh. I live in a 3 bed terrace house. And there’s just me. Should I live in a 1 bed flat???

Same here.
How selfish of us 😆

I half agree, but with the notion that the whole house is heated. That means it's an unnecessary carbon footprint issue. Otherwise I don't think it's selfish.

I‘m sure they know how to switch radiators off in the rooms they’re not using.

Lordofmyflies · 03/10/2026 16:38

We have a 6 bed for 3 of us. Master bed, my office, DH office, DC1 room when he comes home, DC2 room and a guest room. Is that ok with you?
We use the Hive app to heat particular rooms at a set time so heating is low.

godmum56 · 03/10/2026 17:06

looks like we have another goad and go poster

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

They've obviously got loads of money to spend on a property. I assume that they have bought such a large house in anticipation of having a family and maybe they plan to do lots of entertaining and having friends to stay.

MammarOfOne · 03/10/2026 17:38

Absolutely nothing to do with you or anyone.
As long as they can afford it they can buy/rent anything at all.

Jealousy is a very unattractive trait.

OneSunnyGoldDreamer · 03/10/2026 17:49

I’m in a couple. Four bed house no kids
we have pets
one bedroom we converted to an utility room
one is our shared office
one is my art studio and spare room
we can afford it so why not??? Me not buying it hasn’t made any difference to the housing stock for people with kids in my area. Still plenty for sale.

Stelladid · 03/10/2026 17:51

@activedough your comment is not only unreasonable, but idiotic. You don’t know this. Couple’s circumstances. They may each need a home office, have guests to stay sometimes and may want a home gym. Irrespective of this, it’s none of your business.

JadeWriter · 03/10/2026 17:53

Jealousy isn't good for you.

PetuniaT · 03/10/2026 17:55

No - it's jealousy

DrKartz · 03/10/2026 17:58

Mind your own business.
They paid fir it.

LibertyLily · 03/10/2026 17:58

Agree with other posters that you sound jealous OP.

We bought a six bed (3500 sq ft) house when DS was little. We had no more DC and never planned to do so.

Since then we've owned - two five beds, a four bed and we're now in a three bed (just me and DH) which, tbh, feels too small so we'll probably upsize again in the next couple of years.

We enjoy decorating and always buy projects that we DIY. I get bored when our latest project is finished. We've always found uses for all the rooms (office, music room, book room, art studio etc).

JadeWriter · 03/10/2026 17:59

I've got friends who are very wealthy, and I drive round in 2012 car, because I can't afford a new one.

Im really happy for them because they are wonderful people who've worked very hard.
I honestly feel sorry for jealous people, because they will never be happy.

Washingupdone · 03/10/2026 18:02

Extra rooms for: working from home, future proofing for looking after elderly parents, children there own or adopting , extended family visits or starting up a drug plantation, giving shelter to homeless people, breeding animals…..

If they paid the price, not you business

cramptramp · 03/10/2026 18:03

So why didn’t a family buy it?

Greenshed · 03/10/2026 18:03

It is none of your business, frankly, OP.

cramptramp · 03/10/2026 18:06

My child and their partner have 2 children and live in a 6 bedroomed house. Is this ok with you @activedough?

Stelladid · 03/10/2026 18:07

This is another one of those where someone asks if they are being unreasonable. Everyone tells them they are and the only posts they reply with argue with them 🤷‍♀️

gardenflowergirl · 03/10/2026 18:07

We can all do what we like with our money, buy what we want if we have the money.
Maybe they both need an office to work from home and do work calls, meetings on teams online etc.

2 home offices, bedroom, guest room and maybe they need a nursery in future? I couldn't get worked up about it tbh

Kellph83 · 03/10/2026 18:11

This post Is weird and comes across as jealous and bitter.
if they are late 20s maybe they’re planning to start a family.
its none of Your business though, and not really selfish if they’ve bought it fair and square!

Hotterthebetter · 03/10/2026 18:11

I suppose you think my husband and I should move out of our 4 bedroom house, which we extended ourselves to buy when the children were small, as it’s just us now?

UniquePinkSwan · 03/10/2026 18:12

They can buy what they want. Can’t stand people who are jealous of people with more money than they.

RoseThorne · 03/10/2026 18:19

It is none of your business how they choose to spend their cash. Why don't you get a job that will fund the 5 bed house you appear to crave
