AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

We bought a five bed as a young couple. All bedrooms now full with young adults who cannot possibly hope to get on the housing ladder

Yep, families cramped in an Air BNB because my ex had a music studio and home office 🙄

Those same families could have bought the house instead. But they didn't.

Exactly!
We use every room in our house. Both of us having our own home office is a luxury (we acknowledge that) but it does make our lives easier and pleasant.
We both have to WFH frequently and I need a space to write where I won’t be disturbed. We got to a stage where we could afford it so we did.
There is nothing wrong with that.

If they paid good money for it then it’s absolutely none of your business and YABU
If it is council or housing association then YANBU

Why didn’t the struggling families buy the house then? Or do you mean that big properties should be seized by the state and transformed into social housing? Or that people should sell their properties at submarket values? Or that couples without children shouldn’t buy big homes?

What exactly do you want?

Starzinsky · 02/10/2026 21:21

No shortage of 5 bedrooms home for sale here as no-one can afford them or the stamp duty. Could be many reasons why they need the space. And extremely sad when we now begrudge someone for having a family sized home.

Mirsine · 02/10/2026 21:21

And sound very jealous and bitter 🤣

They may have their own businesses and need office spaces, or a home salon.

They may have children from previous relationships who would like their own rooms there.

The woman might be pregnant. Or planning on becoming pregnant soon.

Or they might just want more rooms to use as a guest room, walk in wardrobe, gym, games room, or whatever the hell they want them to be.

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

Mind your own business you judgemental, nosy, busybody.

VerityMarch · 02/10/2026 21:24

They can live where they want.
You don't know their dynamics, the dynamics of extended family, if they plan to have kids or adopt or foster... Nothing.
None of your business. People can do what they can afford.

Are you jealous they can and you can't? If not surely you have better things to do than worry about what others do that doesn't affect you.

Seriously people in this day and age are so nosey always up in people's business not only judging but posting ridiculous threads.

Some thoughts don't need to be public.

BatchCookBabe · 02/10/2026 21:26

LOL, jealous much @activedough ?!

My DD and her husband have a 4 bed detached (just the two of them.)

Their bedroom, an office, a guest room, and a room for all their books, and DVDs, and a large walk in wardrobe for all their clothes and shoes. (Also has a single bed in it, in case they have extra guests.)

They have 3 bathrooms too. Grin

Shortbreadel · 02/10/2026 21:28

That's like calling someone selfish for eating out at a nice restaurant because someone else might want to but can't afford it...

I agree with you OP although I can see we are very much in the minority here 😬 but then I find anyone using far more than they need in any sense to be a bit wrong. It’s not that I would ban it, but inwardly I find it a bit cringey when 2 people rattle around a 5 bedroom house with 5 acres, ‘because we need the space’

I have a relative living in a three storey five bedroom house with their partner and one child. Would you similarly judge them or think that’s ok because they are a family? They definitely won’t be having any more by the way.

APlagueOnBothYourHouses · 02/10/2026 21:29

My friends have just bought an absolutely enormous house. They have loads of money because they don’t have any children.

I just think less competition would help so many people. I just fundamentally disagree with having way more space than you need when so many people have fallen on hard times and their kids are living like sardines

Do you apply this logic to wealthy celebrities? the aristocracy? CEO’s of major corporations? Investment bankers? Or is it just ordinary people who should be allocated square footage depending on how many kids they reproduce? It’s always, always “ordinary” people who are berated for doing well for themselves by people like you, why is that? In my opinion it’s because they are in your orbit, unlike the wealthy people mentioned above, it smacks of jealousy because you can see the ordinary people buy the detached five bedroom house across the street from you and that smarts.

Of course. I think everyone should be mindful of waste and overconsumption. I also judge people who own second properties they only use twice a year. I’m not jealous, I live in a perfectly nice 4 bedroom house. But I have kids so each bedroom is occupied by a person.

Thisusernameisalwaysavailable · 02/10/2026 21:32

Lol... OP, how many bedrooms and reception rooms (including conservatories) have you got in your house?

And how many people live there?

Who has DVDs any more?

I do have a friend who is a DVD collector. He does have an entire room dedicated to it. Mostly horror/sci-fi films and series.
He does have a point when he says he will always own the content though. You never do if you stream or have a subscription. Plus, you get extra content on DVDs.

Well, surely if you cared about overconsumption, the kids would be sharing.... And I fact you wouldn't have had kids in the first place....

Livelovebehappy · 02/10/2026 21:34

Behave….maybe they wfh and need an office each, and intend to start a family. Maybe they’re moving in aging parents. Maybe they’re going to use it as a HMO. Is it your opinion that they should only buy a bigger house after they’ve got children?

So when your kids move out, you will down size? After each one moves on?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 02/10/2026 21:35

Why didn’t you buy it op? Are you jealous?

AllIwantForChrismasIsAKitchenAidStandMixer · 02/10/2026 21:36

You sound extremely bitter and jealous OP. Should everyone only be assigned the exact right size property to meet their requirements? Should DH, I and our one DC have a two bedroom home not a 4 bed because that’s all we currently need. Never mind that we might have more children and DH and I both work from home a lot?

You’ve got a four bedroomed house! That’s more children than average for a start and you are going to have to move house three times to ensure you don’t have an empty bedroom. What a way to live.
