AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

So when your kids move out, you will down size? After each one moves on?

This is a good point.
I'm currently trying to downsize but am a keen gardener. Finding a small bungalow with a little garden is not easy at all where I live. There are flats but I would not be able to grow my veg and sit outside.
I could move out of the area but my voluntary job, friends and clubs are all here and I might be unable to drive to them as I get older..

So here I sit in my three bed house looking on Rightmove without luck and they are currently building a 4/5 executive home estate on farmland near me.

It's not just starter homes that are needed to make the system work it's little homes, on little plots for people who want to downsize.

It's not just hard to leave the house where 40 years of all your memories are, it's physically hard to find somewhere.

Seems pretty sensible to buy a family home if they intend to start a family and whilst they have no chidlren and can both start overpaying the mortgage, prior to maternity leave and things.

Who has DVDs any more?

We do. We still have several hundred vinyl records as well.

Your life must be very simple and easy if this is all you have to worry and gripe about FFS.

Of course. I think everyone should be mindful of waste and overconsumption. I also judge people who own second properties they only use twice a year. I’m not jealous, I live in a perfectly nice 4 bedroom house. But I have kids so each bedroom is occupied by a person.

I think you are jealous, seeing all these couples with all that spare space that you don’t have.

We do. We still have several hundred vinyl records as well.

Yeah, same here. 500 vinyl albums, 450 vinyl singles, 1000 DVDs, 200 blurays, around 450 CD albums, 150 or so CD singles, and around 200 books.

DD loves DVDs, and has about 250 of them. Even though she is a millennial. So odd to assume no-one has or buys DVDs. They are still for sale. Streaming is all well and good, until stuff is taken off. DVDs give it you forever.

Also, we have all of the original unedited uncensored versions of everything, before they were snowflaked, and butchered within an inch of their life, so as not to offend the 'professionally offended...' 🙄

We have loads. Moved a lot across to blu ray but basically, yes, I'd rather own something properly rather than wonder when Amazon will delete it.

Also the compression a lot of streamers use rubbishes the quality and especially the sound.

sunandpeonies · 02/10/2026 21:48

Jealousy is such an ugly emotion OP. We are all free to make our own choices.

MrsShawnHatosy · 02/10/2026 21:48

We live in a slightly more spacious than average three bed semi. We’ve added a garden room on to the back and converted the garage to a home office. We fully intended to have children when we bought the house but it never happened. Should we have moved into a smaller house when I passed child bearing age?

latetothefisting · 02/10/2026 21:48

Struggling to see how this couple viewing the property somehow stopped a family with four kids also viewing it and putting an offer in?

My husband and I have bought a 4 bed house, just the two of us with no children planned. We have our bedroom, an office each and then a guest room. If we did want children then a 5th bedroom would be helpful.

It’s absolutely none of your business though and you’re coming off as jealous.

Perhaps we should’ve bought a 5 bed so our dog could have his own room 🤭

Edited

Same same.

MN is ludicrous sometimes. We like the space and room for guests too.

I suppose we should cram ourselves into a 1 bed flat because that's all we can justify as a couple without children 🙄

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

Blimey if you’re outraged by them, you’d be shocked by us. 7 bed, 5 bath, 5 reception rooms and just me and autistic DD most of the time and DH at weekends - though it did used to house 6 of us when both my kids and foster boys lived with us. 8 when elderly relatives came for extended stays to give a bit of respite to SiL.

But don’t worry - if you have a few million, can cover the utilities and council tax - oh and the mansion tax - do feel free to make us an offer. Perhaps you could convert it into an HMO for several families and allow them to live in it for free while you pick up the tab? Goodness, the garden is pretty substantial, perhaps you could offer tent pitches to refugees?

It’s not jealousy. I could buy a bigger house, but I prefer a smaller mortgage. I dislike waste. I think it’s good to only use or take what you need, within a bit of reason. 1 person rattling round an 8 bedroom house is a bit mad, sorry.

TheBers · 02/10/2026 21:56

Stompythedinosaur · 02/10/2026 20:25

No, it isn't selfish. We're all allow to but the house we want if we can afford it.

But isn’t that that the definition of selfish? Doing things because you can, rather than whats morally right?
I don’t think we are are at that point yet where private housing is a moral choice but I can see it might be in the near future. Second homes as an investments is already a bit debatable

Yepo · 02/10/2026 21:57

I live in a five bedroomed house and I’m not a couple. It’s just me but I do have a cat and they like to choose where they sleep each night so I vote unreasonable.

Ek1234 · 02/10/2026 21:58

My DW and I were one of those "selfish" couples who bought a 5 bed house for just two of us. We like to entertain and enjoy having room for family and friends to stay over. We also both work from home so one of the bedrooms is a home office. And as it happens 2 years into living in our lovely house we had the first of our two children.

GetAbsOrDieTrying · 02/10/2026 22:01

This is the stupidest post I have ever read! Young people buy homes so that they can start a family and have space to grow. Why should this young couple not have a lovely 5 bedroom property?! Most sensible people get an education, a good job, find a partner, fall in love, get married, buy house and have a child. We had a child and then bought our first 5 bedroom home. Nothing selfish about it. We now have another child. Both kids are different genders so they have their own rooms. We often have guests and love having a 5 bedroom property. Unless it is a council home it is no one’s business!

CunningLinguist2 · 02/10/2026 22:01

How (the fuck) is this any business of yours?

SleeplessRoads · 02/10/2026 22:02

AgeingMillennial · 02/10/2026 20:11

I agree with you OP although I can see we are very much in the minority here 😬 but then I find anyone using far more than they need in any sense to be a bit wrong. It’s not that I would ban it, but inwardly I find it a bit cringey when 2 people rattle around a 5 bedroom house with 5 acres, ‘because we need the space’

We have two home offices, a bedroom and a dressing room (because why would I get dressed while someone is trying to sleep in the same room). Another room for our home gym stuff would be nice. We’re not rattling around, we’re using the space. I don’t understand why anyone would want to be cramped and not have designated spaces for the different things they do in their home 🤷‍♀️

Are you well ?? Its got nothing to do with families struggling to find homes. Its affordability and cost !! Most families might need a 5 bed but can't afford 500k plus for the house. If someone can afford it they are welcome to buy it. And no the council idbt going to give you or a family needing thst space s house thst size. 🙄

But why do you need to take a house that has four bedrooms? Why can’t your children share? Why is it not selfish to have a four bedroom house but it is selfish to have one if you have children?

When you move three times as they move out, why is that not wasteful?

Doesn’t make you less selfish because others can’t afford it.
No different to having a full table, fridge and pantry full of food you don’t eat whilst others go hungry. If you don’t need it, it is selfish to let others go without.

Wasteful when they could be sharing. That's a want not a need, you voild definitely downsize.

According to another thread…two!

So a four bedroom house. And two children. Selfish and wasteful. You have to heat it you know!
