AIBU to think a couple moving into in a five bedroom house is selfish?

AIBU here??

I’ve noticed that a couple have recently moved into a 5 bed detached property in my area. They don’t have any children…

I honestly don’t understand it. Why on earth would two people need five bedrooms?! Surely a house that size should be going to a family who actually needs the space?

It just seems incredibly selfish to me when there are families struggling to find suitable homes.

I agree with you OP although I can see we are very much in the minority here 😬 but then I find anyone using far more than they need in any sense to be a bit wrong. It’s not that I would ban it, but inwardly I find it a bit cringey when 2 people rattle around a 5 bedroom house with 5 acres, ‘because we need the space’

You think life should be we all can only have whay we need, not what we wish, there are countries like that, I don’t suspect you’d wish to live there.😂

I actually agree that there needs to be a bigger conversation about the amount of unoccupied bedrooms in this country. Where I live nimbyism re: new house building is rife, but most of it comes from retired couples occupying 1 bedroom of a 3-5 bedroom home. I don’t blame the individuals, there is absolutely zero insensitive to downsize in this county - if anything there are many incentives not too.

But a couple in their 20s is hardly awful is it? They might be imminently about to have a load of kids!

I agree too. But it sounds like money talks!

No I specifically said I acknowledge people can do as they please, I wouldn’t want to change that.

You'd hate living in my village then.

People live in fucking massive 6+ bedroom houses round here.

My daughter's friend is an only child of 8, living with Mum and Dad in a 7 bed house with a bathroom in each bedroom, and two downstairs toilets, and a shower room.
Her other friends bedroom is bigger than our living room. Two kids in that house.
One friend has a kitchen bigger than the footprint of our entire house, and again, 2 kids.

Why would I hate it? Much the same around me. I love my village.

Or… maybe I’m just posting on a discussion thread and happen to have a different opinion to you?

There’s having an opinion and then there’s being judgemental and accusing people of people responsible for the housing crisis because they could afford a big house. 🤷‍♀️

TheFairyCaravan · 02/10/2026 21:11

DH and I live in a 4 bed detached that we bought after the kids left home. We have our bedroom, a spare double, a dressing room and an office/spare single. We don’t live near our children so we need the extra space for when the come to visit. Even if we didn’t, families had as much chance as we did to buy it when the house was up for sale.

TheLemonLemur · 02/10/2026 21:11

Nothing to do with you. Maybe both wfh, planning a family, home gym lots of reasons for extra bedrooms

No it isn’t. Houses are expensive because of competition. Trickle down economics are a thing. If fewer people offer on bigger houses they get a bit cheaper. The people in average size houses then leave and free up the average size houses for people in tiny houses. Less waste. Nobody should have 3 or 4 spare bedrooms, it’s immoral.

Houses are expensive because people can afford them. If people couldn't afford them there would be vast numbers of un-sold houses, and there are not. If you want houses to be cheaper, give people less money. Be careful what you wish for...

It’s bedrooms PLUS 2-3 sitting rooms, 3 if you count the conservatory.

If they're in their 20s and can afford a 5-bed house, good on them. They won't have to make multiple moves as their family grows. You are just envious obviously.

Yep, families cramped in an Air BNB because my ex had a music studio and home office 🙄

Those same families could have bought the house instead. But they didn't.

This jist makes no logical sense, no housing is free in the uk. There is no shortage of five bed houses, if you need one, buy one, and if you can’t it’s not becaude this couple took the last one from you it is because you can’t afford it.

honestly jealousy isn’t pretty but at least try ti make your argument logical,

weetumshie · 02/10/2026 21:12

I live alone and I bought a four bedroom house. I have one bedroom for sleeping, one for crafts, one for my dressing room/guest room and one guest room. Do I need 4 bedrooms? Probably not, but I want downstairs space- large kitchen diner/ utility room/ loo/ sitting room. Or should single people or couples be consigned to live in poky places? If I could have three bedrooms and the same downstairs space I’d consider it.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 02/10/2026 21:13

If late 20s there’s a good chance they are thinking about having children in the next few years. And if not, they might want a couple of work from home rooms, spare room for guests, or room for hobbies

HotSauceNow · 02/10/2026 21:13

We bought a 4 bed which we did a loft conversion to become a 5 when we were late 20s/early 30s with no kids. Because we wanted kids shortly and given stamp duty doing it in stages didn’t make sense to us when we could go straight there. Now every bedroom is in use as a full time bedroom or study.

pixlchix · 02/10/2026 21:14

Bought? No it’s not selfish they can buy what they like it’s their money? No-one was stopping a family buying it, they just got there first 🤷🏼‍♀️

Council property? Arguably yes, although that would never happen due to bedroom restrictions so it’s a moot point really.

notacooldad · 02/10/2026 21:15

My kids have left home and we are in our 60s.
We are looking at upsizing from a 3 bed semi to 4 bed detached. So what?

If I had to guess why they wanted so many bedrooms I woukd say w
2 could be WFH rooms, one for them and guest bedrooms.

CheerfulBunny · 02/10/2026 21:15

Sorry, OH and I live in a 5 bed without children but we didn't check with you first. We both work from home so have treated ourselves to an office each. Mind you, our house is very old and crumbly and quite unsuitable for children. Perhaps this makes it ok.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/10/2026 21:15

Oh come on op, you are jealous and/or being deliberately goady. Some of us like space. I have a decent sized house (four beds, three reception, etc) just for me and my pets. I use all the space. These days people often work from home. I like to have a separate dressing room. I don’t have a lego room, and I don’t know if Opsiedasiy is being facetious but I do have a friend who has one.

Wetblanket78 · 02/10/2026 21:15

They can afford it they can live where the fuck they want. It's nobody else's business they might have a lot of family who stay with them at Christmas etc. But it's really nobody else's business. A relative of mine lives in a 4 bedroom. They did want to have children but it just never happened.

Honestly what am I reading, so the small houses become the most expensive ? And you can buy a 5 bed for less? 😂

AMarkAMissionABrandAScar · 02/10/2026 21:16

They're building 4 and 5 bed "executive" homes at a rate of knots. I'm sure all these large families who have the money for a 5 bed but just can't seem to stumble across one won't have long to wait.

ThatMintMember · 02/10/2026 21:16

YABU.

My husband and I bought a 4 bed detached house just for us 2. We nearly bought a 5 bed detached first though. We wanted to buy a home to grow into without having to move again. 6 years later we've got a business where we both work from home, a child and another on the way. We've filled the space as we knew we would, it makes good financial sense to buy what you can afford at the time as we couldn't afford this house now as it's worth more now. Would hate to have to pay stamp duty, solicitors fees etc to move into something bigger at this point.

BunnyLake · 02/10/2026 21:16

5 bed houses tend to be in a price bracket where potential buyers are not suffering from a lack of choices.

Gingercatlover · 02/10/2026 21:19

@AgeingMillennial
what is being “wasted” though a new build will be the most energy efficient house available?
What is it that is actually wasteful?

GiveMeWordGames · 02/10/2026 21:19

What a bizarre thing to be worked up about.
