Pregnant, moving in together but I cannot stand his dogs

I’m three months pregnant and currently do not live with my partner. Since becoming pregnant, I really cannot stand the smell of his dogs. I also really hate the fur everywhere.

One of these dogs is quite elderly and realistically won’t be around in spring next year when I am due. I think this is a really smelly one as he doesn’t take it to be groomed as they are so old.

His house at the moment really smells of dog and I decided as of last night that I’m not going to his house anymore. He can’t stay at mine because he has to go back to his to look after the dogs.

He has given notice on his flat and will be moving back to his mum’s for a few months to help her as she’s old with Health Issues. The plan for December January times was for him to rent a place for both of us. I really do want to live with him, and I know at that point of my pregnancy. I will really need him around and want him around. However, I cannot stand the thought of his stinky dogs being in the house and the fur everywhere.

The thought of having a child and having fur all over their baby clothes really stresses me out. When I go over to his house now I literally have to hold my nose and he does try his best to clean mop etc but on some occasions it is really strong smelling. He is his nose blind to this and doesn’t realise and I’m sure he thinks I’m exaggerating.

I am bothered by this so much that I actually wish I could turn back the clock and not get pregnant because he does come with the dogs as a package. Obviously, I can’t do that and I’m not going to terminate, especially at this point, but I just feel so stressed out and down about this.

I’m considering maybe we just don’t live together once we have the child so I don’t have to be around the dogs but when I broach this with him, he was offended and did not agree at all with the idea.

I can’t tell him not to keep his dogs and I wouldn’t say that because one he would resent me and two he had them first, but I just cannot see a world where I am happy with having these two dogs or even just one of them around.

He has said that when we get this place together, he can section off areas for the dog/s to be, But I still think the house is going to stink and the fur will still get everywhere. I want my baby to be able to crawl around and not have fur all over them.

I don’t even know what I want from this post, but has anyone been in this situation and has it got better? Or am I just doomed? Has anyone decided to live apart from their partner.

You are a sociopath. Unhinged to boot

I think the same about people who would prioritise an old mutt over a baby

No one is coming to your front door to kill your cat! Calm down!

There is no need or justification for a reaction like this.

Where exactly? You think pets are as important as people. I fundamentally disagree. Believe you are the one who started throwing insults.

Kittensinthecorner · Yesterday 22:40

OP don't move in with him, at least not until/ unless you want to. You clearly don't want to
He can't tell you you must / make you
You can't completely control his reaction

You're the person that said I should get my 20 year old cat put to sleep

That’s not quite accurate is it? I said the OPs partner could get the elderly dog put to sleep. You asked about your 20 year old cat and I responded that if it was causing a problem then yes. It’s not causing a problem so you wouldn’t. Why do you care what I think anyway?

OneFastPinkTraybake · Yesterday 22:45

You didn't see people egging the op to get the dogs put to sleep. Maybe read the full thread before typing

You're a nasty person. All you have said is about killing pets

Yes I can imagine shouting into a vacuum must be quite time consuming.

Also not true. Still doesn’t explain why it bothers you that a stranger on the internet has a different opinion to you? I’m not coming round to murder your cat in the night am I? I’m just saying that old pets that are causing issues in relationships can be put down, and others rehomed.

I would say I am house proud and I love my dog to bits but I did struggle during pregnancy, so here my suggestions.

  1. Automatic hoover (I still need to get this!)
  2. Also hoover a few times a week (my husband does this thanks to his OCD)
  3. Reed diffuser, as your sense of smell is heightened due to pregnancy
  4. Do they go on sofas? Get a sofa cover and wash regularly along with cushions
  5. Wash bedding weekly, that’s a given anyway
  6. Pay for the dogs to be groomed regularly if you or your partner don’t want to wash them
  7. Id get a cleaner too if I could afford it
  8. Stair gate to keep dogs downstairs
  9. Baby playpen to keep toys and baby away from dogs

Having said all the above, I hope your partner will accept you don’t want to be looking after the dogs when you move in…

Throwaway65131 · Yesterday 22:51

I too cannot abide that dog smell - but I’ve noticed dogs that are kept clean and well groomed have much less of a smell. Why does the older dog being old mean it cannot be well groomed?

PyongyangKipperbang · Yesterday 22:51

In answer to @fluffypillowspls I would think that the best thing to do at the moment is to "live together apart". It clearly isnt going to work with you at his and vice versa, full time so thats really the only option.

Oh and I'm being reported. Out. Fine for people to say my cat should die because hes 20 and he's too old to live. Report away. Smug faces. Smug tons. Smug faces

Middle class smug faces

What on earth does being middle class have to do with anything? 🤣

My mum broke her back 3 month's ago and when they scanned her they found out she's got cancer. So too right my 20 year old cat isn't an inconvenience. I'll be deleting this account tonight.

Fuck off. To the reporters
