Neighbour’s car ruining neighbourhood

Would love to know what you all think of this. We live in a lovely little street, we all take pride in our homes. There is no off-street parking unfortunately. Recently an older man (early sixties?)left his car next to an embankment which faces our homes. The problem is, his car had broken down on a busy street and had to be towed somewhere. This was about three weeks ago. The man has been trying to fix it himself and has sometimes had the front grille off and even jacks under the front of the car (all wheels are on). A few of us have challenged him about it. One neighbour has explained that it looks unsightly and none of us here fix our cars in the street. His car is noticeably older than most in our street. His answer has been that there was no space for it to be left in his own road around the corner when the recovery vehicle rescued him. Three of us have challenged him. We asked him if he was even from our neighbourhood, as it’s just not done here! The latest time he got quite angry and said he was doing his best and was waiting for a part to arrive. We all feel he should get a garage to tow it away and fix it there. We have checked online and his vehicle is taxed, insured, and has a MOT. The repair he is attempting involves his getting under the car, but no noise involved, which is something I suppose! A few of us want to call the police about him. Three people have told him already that it’s unsightly with the grille removed, so he’s already been warned!

How are we supposed to help him? None of us have any experience of repairing
cars. Besides, we are a younger age group who work in full-time professional roles with families to look after. The man with the car got quite angry with one of the neighbours when he was (politely) challenged. All he did was ask how much longer the car would be there for!

If I was already dealing with the stress of my car being broken and trying to do everything I could to fix it and I kept being challenged I’d probably get angry too.

Life must be pretty sweet for you if a car near your house is all you have to worry about.

How much is your pretty street worth to you?
Club together to pay for his car to be fixed.
It's the decent thing for decent people living on a decent street to do.

i opened this thinking it was a typo and it was a CAT - which oddly would make more sense than this drivel

LaurieFairyCake · 28/09/2026 17:48

What I would do?

nothing 🤷‍♀️ people are allowed to be poor and have no money

JapanesePotWeed · 28/09/2026 17:51

I don't know if anyone here has read my "living next to asylum seekers" thread...
But I feel better now. Imagine living next to OP!

JapanesePotWeed · 28/09/2026 17:52

Balance. We have lost all balance!

Wow what a joy you and your neighbours are!
You come across unbelievably entitled saying how you have 'Challeneged' him. His car isnt parked in your private drive and the poor chap is trying to get it fixed and maybe cant afford a newer car. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to pay for their car to be towed away and then repaired at a garage. Leave him be you busy body!

Skates · 28/09/2026 18:50

Omg. You all sound like petty minded little hitlers. He’s trying his best to get it fixed. Maybe if the men in your street was to offer to help him instead of you lot constantly complaining about it.

Give your head a wobble, silly silly woman.

Mumofoneandone · 28/09/2026 20:01

I think your issue is actually he doesn't live on that road and has had his non working car 'dumped' there. Basically, he should have had the car left as close to his own house as possible ie same road or taken to a garage for repair.
Am surprised a tow vehicle is allowed to leave a vehicle randomly rather than at the owners address or at a garage.
Difficult to know what to suggest, as how long is the situation going to continue, is he insurance actually valid if his vehicle is stored away from his address and is it going to potentially attract trouble? Is the vehicle actually causing any access issues/blocking the road etc.

sliverette · 28/09/2026 20:18

Yes this has been our concern, thank you for understanding. The car couldn’t be left at his address round the corner because there was apparently no space. We suggested to the man he gets the towing truck back to take it to his road. I’m sure if they waited for a while, a place would become available. It is a busier street there. Still think he could have had it towed to a garage though; we did suggest options to him. Like I’ve said before, he wasn’t receptive to our suggestions. Interesting thought about
the validity of his insurance though!

You don't own the public highway. Leave him alone.

Can we have a diagram of where the offending car is, and where all your houses are?

His insurance will be fine.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Just fucking leave him be. I'm sure he is as unhappy about his car being there as you are and, unlike you, he has an actual reason to be unhappy.

Shade17 · 28/09/2026 23:22

And how do you know it’s insured?

Oxo01 · 29/09/2026 01:32

As others have said he probarly cant aford another tow or fix it at a garage but you dont care as long as your veiw is great sod anyone else.

If I was him I would tell you all to
P / off and when I had fixed it i would leave it there longer just to annoy you more.
Snobs the lot of you.
My Sxxx dont stink comes to mind

Greenmouldycheese · 29/09/2026 04:41

Who do you and your neighbours think you are? Leave the man alone.

Wordsmithery · 29/09/2026 04:46

He leaves his jalopy on a public street where you and your family might see it? He even leaves jacks under it and takes the grille off?
This is horrific.
Report to the police and take legal action. You should also shop him for benefit fraud as he's probably at that too.

Maisymouse2 · 29/09/2026 05:12

Get real. Maybe he enjoys it as a hobby.
Go wash your net curtains🤣

How is fraud from parking a car ? Ya weirdo

andfinallyhereweare · 29/09/2026 06:21

Unless it’s a private road where you all chip in for the maintenance op @sliverette then it doesn’t really matter “what you all feel” about the situation, his cars broken down, he’s fixing it- annoying yes, hardly the end of the world. No noise- what’s the issue? Just get on with your life instead of looking out the window so much.

He will of course have thought of these things himself and won't require your suggestions. Your suggestions sound expensive, and he's not doing anything wrong leaving it where it is. I can't believe the investment you and your neighbours have in this. It's a minor issue.
