Neighbour’s car ruining neighbourhood

Would love to know what you all think of this. We live in a lovely little street, we all take pride in our homes. There is no off-street parking unfortunately. Recently an older man (early sixties?)left his car next to an embankment which faces our homes. The problem is, his car had broken down on a busy street and had to be towed somewhere. This was about three weeks ago. The man has been trying to fix it himself and has sometimes had the front grille off and even jacks under the front of the car (all wheels are on). A few of us have challenged him about it. One neighbour has explained that it looks unsightly and none of us here fix our cars in the street. His car is noticeably older than most in our street. His answer has been that there was no space for it to be left in his own road around the corner when the recovery vehicle rescued him. Three of us have challenged him. We asked him if he was even from our neighbourhood, as it’s just not done here! The latest time he got quite angry and said he was doing his best and was waiting for a part to arrive. We all feel he should get a garage to tow it away and fix it there. We have checked online and his vehicle is taxed, insured, and has a MOT. The repair he is attempting involves his getting under the car, but no noise involved, which is something I suppose! A few of us want to call the police about him. Three people have told him already that it’s unsightly with the grille removed, so he’s already been warned!

You and your neighbours sound like arseholes.

Hth.

Just came on because I think this needs to be repeated.

I'm not doubting you but every time I read a thread like this (and I agree with the 'leave him alone' posters) I'm reminded of what happened to me years ago as a student. I had a beat-up mini which I'd left parked for some time in the same spot and residents complained to the police. They paid me a visit and I asked directly - it's a public road, it's parked safely and there are no parking restrictions; am I not allowed to park there? The policeman claimed that no-one had the right to park indefinitely on a public road. Still unsure if I believe him.

He was lying, but probably because it was easier to bully you into backing down than tell Hyacinth to wind her neck in.

"Ruining the neighborhood"? Really? Ffs.

Namemechangey · 27/09/2026 22:36

Please tell me the street so I can put it on my, never move to this street because of the neighbours are batshit and nasty list.
for context I live on a street with nice houses on it, we would all have made friends with him and he probably would be on our street WhatsApp by now with Sandra doing a bake sale for money to help with the parts, Eric out there with his tools trying to fix it with him, Edwina would be petitioning the government for free breakdown services for the over 60s by now. Someone would likely be worrying about the squirrel that hid his nuts in that spot which would create a riot on the WhatsApp and then Peter would probably state there should all wake up and vote reform as they would help him and the squirrel, then he’d get asked politely to leave politics out of the group chat and he would apologise.

Have you been able to identify a law / rule / bye law that he’s broken?

“Unsightliness”?

sliverette · 28/09/2026 09:58

I am surprised how many of you are in support of the man with the old car! Not sure how you would feel IRL if you had to look out onto a car jacked up with the front
grille missing for over three weeks. We’re not snobs, we just take pride in our neighbourhood.

GasPanic · 28/09/2026 10:19

Have you offered to help him push it back round when a parking space is available ?

I'm sure he would much rather do the repairs close to his house, and if his house is just around the corner ...

Well, you could draw the curtains. Or you could go out for the day. The fresh air and contact with the real world would do you no end of good.

Would like to think this is a joke but sadly I have just moved from a street exactly like this. My poor neighbour has had no end of abuse because she has been fixing up her car, even though most of the time she's doing it inside her own bloody garage and is so quiet you barely know she's in there! He dp even got racial slurs thrown at him! Some people are seriously unhinged!

My first reaction was to think it was a joke, but otoh i have an aunt who i can see complaining exactly like this so it's plausible its real

OP - I live on a nice quiet street of detached houses, and three doors down there is actually a van up on bricks, not sure how long its been there for. It has not occurred to me to phone the police.
The only thing worrying me is that I've seen someone has been working under it and it may not be completely stable on said bricks 😬

Not many people are supporting the situation. The point is there is nothing you can do. It’s just one of those things and neighbours ganging up on him and calling the police is what makes you unreasonable.

He’s not breaking any rules, so you just have to accept the situation.

Oh you are snobs.

SecretDressAgent · 28/09/2026 10:45

It's like those Housing Association (HOA) stories written by AI on YouTube.

You could offer him a cup of tea, perhaps a Tunnock. Whatever that is.

I’ll ask you again, what have you or any of your neighbours done to help him?

you are a massive snob.

Morecoffeeneedef · 28/09/2026 10:47

What's with this 'elderly man (early sixties)' dig? He isn't particularly old and the point is that he's not getting on with his repair as quickly as you'd like. This habit of casual ageism is getting alarming.

Morecoffeeneedef · 28/09/2026 10:51

dramalessllama · 27/09/2026 21:57

"Ruining the neighborhood"? Really? Ffs.

This must be a joke surely? One car being repaired has ruined a nice neighbourhood.

Pinkflamingo10 · 28/09/2026 10:52

His car is older than the others on the street?! Outrageous!
I wouldn’t stand for this at all. Absolutely phone the police for that alone !

ItsAlwaysTwins · 28/09/2026 10:55

I assume this is a silly attempt at a wind up.

If not, you know there’s absolutely nothing you or the police can do.

RoastLambs · 28/09/2026 10:55

Of course you are snobs you loon.

Itsasecretnow · 28/09/2026 10:57

But…it’s unsightly, dontcha know?? 😂

Slightyamusedandsilly · 28/09/2026 10:59

What a bunch of unpleasant NIMBYs. Is he legally parked? Then leave him alone or he could considering making a complaint about harassment.

borborygmus1 · 28/09/2026 11:05

Wow, you all sound like small town cul-de-sac knobheads. Why so judgemental about someone's older car? I drive a car worth about £200 but have a paid off mortgage, fully funded public sector pension and can save upwards of £80000 annually. I'd hate to park on your road with all the judgement that would come my way! It's a public road, it doesn't belong to you.

Dontcallmescarface · 28/09/2026 11:17

If it bothers you all so much, have a whip round and pay for a mobile mechanic sort it. The more you bother him, the longer it will take, your choice really

Seawolves · 28/09/2026 11:29

Just you wait until he takes the hubcaps off too..

LowlandLucky · 28/09/2026 11:38

Who the fuck are you ? The Queen ? If the car is taxed, mot'd and insured it is nothing to do with you unless it is parked on your land or in the gated community you live in.

Eristealviper · 28/09/2026 11:45

And just WHO do you think is even looking at your precious tidy Street?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
