Neighbour’s car ruining neighbourhood

Would love to know what you all think of this. We live in a lovely little street, we all take pride in our homes. There is no off-street parking unfortunately. Recently an older man (early sixties?)left his car next to an embankment which faces our homes. The problem is, his car had broken down on a busy street and had to be towed somewhere. This was about three weeks ago. The man has been trying to fix it himself and has sometimes had the front grille off and even jacks under the front of the car (all wheels are on). A few of us have challenged him about it. One neighbour has explained that it looks unsightly and none of us here fix our cars in the street. His car is noticeably older than most in our street. His answer has been that there was no space for it to be left in his own road around the corner when the recovery vehicle rescued him. Three of us have challenged him. We asked him if he was even from our neighbourhood, as it’s just not done here! The latest time he got quite angry and said he was doing his best and was waiting for a part to arrive. We all feel he should get a garage to tow it away and fix it there. We have checked online and his vehicle is taxed, insured, and has a MOT. The repair he is attempting involves his getting under the car, but no noise involved, which is something I suppose! A few of us want to call the police about him. Three people have told him already that it’s unsightly with the grille removed, so he’s already been warned!

I am surprised how many of you are in support of the man with the old car! Not sure how you would feel IRL if you had to look out onto a car jacked up with the front
grille missing for over three weeks. We’re not snobs, we just take pride in our neighbourhood.

Well I’m surprised not one of your so wonderful neighbours hasn’t gone out to help the guy with his charming antique; .…which is what would happen in our street.

You are clearly a snob

Get together and help him. Then you can take genuine pride in who you are as people.

Your home and your property is your business.

Stop trying to micromanage other people. It makes you look like a busy body who has nothing better to do.

If this man was constantly doing this, yes I’d be a bit peeved but it’s a one off. Look the other way and be patient.

I have saved all my life to be able to buy my own property and I have to deal with people using the end of my road as a continual drug pick up spot. Be grateful your problems aren’t bigger.

What's with this 'elderly man (early sixties)' dig? He isn't particularly old and the point is that he's not getting on with his repair as quickly as you'd like. This habit of casual ageism is getting alarming.

She said older not elderly.

Oh hello is that the Police? Can you come round and tell this scruffy old man to move his car as we don't want to look at it anymore?
Jesus Christ

Tillow4ever · 28/09/2026 12:49

OP, you absolutely are snobs. The only reason to have an issue with this would be if it were causing an obstruction.

ShowGirI · 28/09/2026 12:52

sliverette · 27/09/2026 18:22

While not causing a nuisance as such, we feel three weeks is too long to have the car parked there. It has even been left over night with the grille taken off. Yes he did say he wanted to repair it himself and “was doing his best”. One of the neighbours advised that “doing his best” would be getting it towed to his own street round the corner!

You sound like a see you next Tuesday

It's like those Housing Association (HOA) stories written by AI on YouTube.

You could offer him a cup of tea, perhaps a Tunnock. Whatever that is.

and? you all sound very judgemental and up your own arses. Leave the man alone.

A man camped outside our house in a campervan for weeks. I think he was on holiday. It was before we all had to pay to park outside our homes.

And that situation is similar to this situation how exactly?

He’s part of your neighbourhood, he lives around the corner doesn’t he? Pride is expressed in many ways - treating people with a sense of community spirit is always much higher on my list in terms of local pride than being excited to have a piece of car-free tarmac that you don’t own anyway. But yeah, ignore the people and just focus on how big your dahlias are I guess. Priorities…

Isobel201 · 28/09/2026 13:45

He's not blocking anybody's access, he is using the road same as everybody else. I would leave him to it.

WaneyEdge · 28/09/2026 13:47

Please phone the police, they could probably do with a laugh!

ScottBakula · 28/09/2026 13:50

Marieb19 · 27/09/2026 19:46

You are not be unreasonable! Your road is not a garage. I would suggest you contact the council, who can contact the owner to have the car removed as it is not roadworthy and unsafe. I can't beleive that previous posters would be happy to have other people's cars repaired outside their homes.

@sliverette did you know your nighbour is on mn ?

But his age is beside the point! This is ageism.

I’ll ask you again, what have you or any of your neighbours done to help him?

you are a massive snob.

How are we supposed to help him? None of us have any experience of repairing
cars. Besides, we are a younger age group who work in full-time professional roles with families to look after. The man with the car got quite angry with one of the neighbours when he was (politely) challenged. All he did was ask how much longer the car would be there for!

If you work full time and have homes and families to take care of then the amount of free time you have available to watch a bloke repairing his car will be limited. Just use your free time more productively.

snobby. Leave him alone

Skibbgirl · 28/09/2026 16:09

For goodness sake - he may be in a financial state which means that he has no option at the moment other than to try and sort it out himself. It's not as if it's a flaky heap of rusting metal with flat tyres, is it! Please stop being such a prima donna about the situation - you and your neighbours. Perhaps if some of you offered to help him, the vehicle would be moved on from your obviously prestigious road sooner! Give the guy a chance .. or give him a helping hand.
