Neighbour’s car ruining neighbourhood

Would love to know what you all think of this. We live in a lovely little street, we all take pride in our homes. There is no off-street parking unfortunately. Recently an older man (early sixties?)left his car next to an embankment which faces our homes. The problem is, his car had broken down on a busy street and had to be towed somewhere. This was about three weeks ago. The man has been trying to fix it himself and has sometimes had the front grille off and even jacks under the front of the car (all wheels are on). A few of us have challenged him about it. One neighbour has explained that it looks unsightly and none of us here fix our cars in the street. His car is noticeably older than most in our street. His answer has been that there was no space for it to be left in his own road around the corner when the recovery vehicle rescued him. Three of us have challenged him. We asked him if he was even from our neighbourhood, as it’s just not done here! The latest time he got quite angry and said he was doing his best and was waiting for a part to arrive. We all feel he should get a garage to tow it away and fix it there. We have checked online and his vehicle is taxed, insured, and has a MOT. The repair he is attempting involves his getting under the car, but no noise involved, which is something I suppose! A few of us want to call the police about him. Three people have told him already that it’s unsightly with the grille removed, so he’s already been warned!

In my street I know at least two of the husbands that would help him. You sound like you live in such a judgy street, how sad for you.

Oh yeah absolutely, my husband would be out there trying to help.

There’s a Thomas the Tank Engine book where Gordon repeats “it’s not wrong, but we just don’t do it” about other people’s quirks/mistakes. The point of the book is that Gordon is being a twat and needs to stop. Same applies here.

I am surprised how many of you are in support of the man with the old car! Not sure how you would feel IRL if you had to look out onto a car jacked up with the front
grille missing for over three weeks. We’re not snobs, we just take pride in our neighbourhood.

No. You are a snob

How is fraud from parking a car ? Ya weirdo

Oh dear... it was heavy sarcasm 😂

If this had happened in our street, one of us would have been out with a cup of tea and biscuits, and asking if he needed a hand at all. I guess there is more than one type of neighbour...

Exactly!

BinNightTonight · 29/09/2026 08:54

Jesus. What has the age of his car got to do with anything?!

ScottBakula · 29/09/2026 08:54

UnwillingAdvocate · 27/09/2026 19:50

Are you even allowed to have broken down cars on the highway undergoing repairs?

How do you think the RAC , AA and Green Flag work ?

How do you think brain cells work? I mean leaving it on the road for weeks on end undergoing repairs. Not calling out breakdown and getting it running again straight away.

My Mum was reported to the council for having her own taxed, insured, mot'd campervan parked on her own driveway. Another resident said it lowered the tone.

Sometimes these people are actually real!

I'm told that my NDN hated it when we had a motorhome parked on our drive.

She must have had a lot of hate, we had it for 6 years!

It has already been moved following a breakdown. It was towed to the street near the owner's home. It wasn't left broken down for 72 hours.

Gossipisgood · 29/09/2026 12:48

Unsightly? It's a car that's legally on the road. Just coz it's older than you & your neighbours cars it's unsightly. You all sound like a bunch of snobs. Have you considered that he might not be able to afford to have it towed away & fixed at a garage. If it's so upsetting to you all why not offer to pay for it to be repaired then it'll be out of your sight & won't bother you anymore. He's not braking any laws so get off your high horse & leave the guy alone.

Suzjspik · 29/09/2026 13:31

You sound like a character from little britain and have you guys nothing else to do ?

Fedupcreative86 · 29/09/2026 17:21

It had been towed in a broken down state to this lady's road, why not did the car owner not have it towed to his own home? It is still broken down after 3 weeks! Of course she can report it and have it removed. I can't think many people want other people's broken down cars in front of their homes.

ThreadGuardDog · 29/09/2026 18:19

Because there was no space in his own road.

No she can’t. It’s taxed, insured and has an MOT. As long as he’s not breaching any road laws there’s nothing stopping him leaving it there. And he’s waiting for a part. What would she say to the police ‘please remove this vehicle because the sight of it offends me’ ? Get real.

I can't think many people want other people's broken down cars in front of their homes.

Wouldn’t give a shit under the circumstances. He’s an old man trying to run and fix his car as best he can within his budget. OP’s post reeks of classicism and snobbery.

ThreadGuardDog · 29/09/2026 18:22

sliverette · 29/09/2026 11:06

Precisely!

Nope. He’s not doing anything wrong. It’s taxed, MOT’d, insured and not causing any problem apart from to your clearly well developed sense of outrage.

I have to say I'm surprised that @sliverette admits to living on a mere "street" and not a lane or better still an avenue!

Oxo01 · 29/09/2026 21:00

I forgot to say in previous post
If you are that bothered how about neighbours offering a hand to fix it.
Even if not merchanics there is usuarly somone on every street that can help.
