AIBU to ask my sister to stop asking about the housekeeper?

I have a lovely housekeeper who comes every other day (not weekends). Yes, I know this might seem like a lot to some, but I don’t like cleaning. It is the last thing I want to do when I finish work. I like everything to be done so I can just get on with making dinner and spending time with my family.
Yet, every time my sister calls (we live in different parts of the country), she seems more interested in what my housekeeper has done today rather than me and her nephews. I just do not understand why she is so invested in it.
Would I be rude to ask her to stop asking about what the housekeeper has done? I just want to catch up with my sister, not talk about chores.

Just say "oh this and that, you know how it is. Now tell me what you and your DC have been up to recently?"

A housekeeper traditionally wouldn’t cook.

Mrs Doubtfire did 🤣

That’s what my cleaner does 🤷‍♀️

Mine doesn't. She cleans. Strangely enough it's why she calls herself a cleaner.

I’m amazed how many people don’t know the difference between a housekeeper and a cleaner .
A cleaner , cleans your house
A housekeeper also cleans but also does other tasks. Irons , change bedding , washing , puts clothes away , empty dish washer etc

My cleaner did all that!

poetryandwine · 27/09/2026 13:43

Hi, OP - Lucky you! My friends pisted overseas have sometimes had the same arrangement as you and I confess to envy, but I’ve never wasted much conversation on it. I do think it sounds delightful.

There is another current thread about someone advertising for a cleaner and being ghosted. She wants someone to do exactly what your housekeeper is doing for you. Bur only twice a week. Most responses are pointing out, some more nicely than others, that her advert is misleading: they all say she should be advertising for a housekeeper, and point out that housekeepers are a step above cleaners.

It seems people lucky enough to be in your position can’t win.

But I would just redirect your sister’s conversation, consistently.

MrsClatterbuck · 27/09/2026 13:43

Ignore all the goady posts. There is another thread about the £110M lottery win and I bet some of these posters would love a housekeeper if they were to win it.
How you spend your money is no one else's business except you and your dh or partner if you have one. I would tell my sister that the housekeeper is not up for discussion. End of. If I had the money I would certainly do the same.

Backtothey2k · 27/09/2026 13:43

People that are still confused what a housekeeper is Google is free 🤣😫

I would call that a cleaner, not that it matters. The housekeepers I know are employed full-time and are responsible for all aspects of running the house.

im delighted to know I apparently also have a housekeeper.

Viviennemary · 27/09/2026 13:48

I'd want to know what your housekeeper does that a cleaner wouldn't. She doesn't appear to do the cooking. Some cleaners will do washing, ironing. folding clothes, changing beds, tidying up. Not met one who did cooking though. Shame!

AgnesMcDoo · 27/09/2026 13:51

I very jealous- I’d love a housekeeper. Sounds amazing.

As for your sister - just tell her to pack it in.

Hurrah, I have a housekeeper too 😁👍🏻

My friends one, cooks too!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/09/2026 13:54

It sounds like bliss. You would not be rude to tell her to mind her own business. If she is interested in how it works she should hire a housekeeper for herself so she can watch her work.
I know a few housekeepers that work for medical professionals and solicitor’s etc. I live close to a lot of hospitals and law firms, they don’t live there, they’re there from 7 to 7 mainly for the children and preparing dinner, cleaning up, It’s a handy number.

I'm confused why you’re confused I don’t have a chef so I come home and cook dinner

Would a housekeeper not also prepare the meals?

Tablo · 27/09/2026 13:55

I would just say ‘the same things she does every time you ask me. It’s not that interesting’

I can see why anyone would be initially curious but asking every time you speak seems odd. I’m not surprised it annoys you @Backtothey2k

EmpressStorm · 27/09/2026 13:56

I’m also curious, how many kids do yo8 have and how many hours a day does she spend ?

Theotheron · 27/09/2026 13:58

Thought-provoking thread.

Maybe I should get some footmen.

Gemilo · 27/09/2026 14:01

If only I had only that to worry about.

Backtothey2k · 27/09/2026 14:02

As a lot for some strange reason seem confused,( I honestly don’t no why)
when a cleaner ,actually does what the title suggests
yes my house keeper would cook if I asked her I like cooking . ( yes she puts shopping away, that I order)
it’s like anything you discuss and pay for what you would like done .
if your cleaner likes being called a cleaner and does all the extra well done 👍 good for you🤣.
my housekeepers job title is housekeeper that’s what she advertises as and that’s what I hired her as. I’m not going to call her a cleaner because strangers on the internet. Don’t understand the difference

How many hours a week does she come for?

OP I think YABU, because I’m sure most people would find it baffling that there was enough to do to occupy a housekeeper 3 days a week in a normal house. So unless you live in a stately home, I’d probably find myself asking you questions too.

DidYeAye16 · 27/09/2026 14:04

To be fair to your sister I'd likely want to know to, because it sounds like an absolute dream! I'd just say she does the same every time she comes.

CatherinedeBourgh · 27/09/2026 14:05

There's plenty to do. When I grew up (not in the UK) most houses around us had housekeepers who lived in. At one point we had two. I can tell you that they were plenty busy! They cleaned, one cooked, they helped take care of the dc, they watered the plants, they did some local shopping but not the big shop, they dealt with minor life admin stuff, and they were generally around to make sure the house was never empty (security risks).

just tell your sister

I pay a housekeeper to do the chores I hate, so I don't want to talk about the chores I hate either

every time she asks about the housekeeper

CitizenZ · 27/09/2026 12:57

She's probably confused as to why you are referring to your cleaner as a housekeeper.

Cleaners and housekeepers have different roles. And I don’t know the OP but if she comes 3x a week it’s more likely she is doing housekeepers roles rather than just cleaning.
