AIBU to ask my sister to stop asking about the housekeeper?

I have a lovely housekeeper who comes every other day (not weekends). Yes, I know this might seem like a lot to some, but I don’t like cleaning. It is the last thing I want to do when I finish work. I like everything to be done so I can just get on with making dinner and spending time with my family.
Yet, every time my sister calls (we live in different parts of the country), she seems more interested in what my housekeeper has done today rather than me and her nephews. I just do not understand why she is so invested in it.
Would I be rude to ask her to stop asking about what the housekeeper has done? I just want to catch up with my sister, not talk about chores.

When I was a cleaner I did whatever my employer asked me to. Sometimes it was 'just' cleaning, sometimes it was ironing and bed changing, sometimes it was sorting out the food cupboards.

The only thing I didn't do was food ordering and cooking, so I assume that would be what a housekeeper would do.

I'm a Housekeeper. I'm never asked to do anything because I take full responsibility for the house. I don't turn up for work and get asked to change the beds today and focus on the bathrooms. My employers never give re-stocking toiletries, food etc a thought, as I run it all. I have access to their diaries, so I know when they're going away and get all their luggage packed in advance for them. There's different levels of Housekeeping, not just one set job description.

I would hate to have someone in the house who has access to everything in that way. I wouldn't want anyone to go through my cupboards. It feels too intimate and an invasion of privacy, not that I have anything to hide.

Everyone's different I guess. Loads of people are much more private. Many couldn't care less. There's a high level of trust. For my part, in the nicest possible way, I couldn't care less about anything I see. I'm not interested in people's lives. I never read letters or cards for instance. I see things as tasks to be completed, not opportunities for a nosy!

Your second description is actually a maid.

Housekeeper takes care of everything in the house like shopping, cooking, basically a housewife but as a job.

Housekeepers don't always cook. I don't. At all. Ever. They have a Chef for that.

Totally nosey question - do you work FT, how much do you earn (hopefully a lot as you sound fab)

Butchyrestingface · 30/09/2026 10:24

Must admit, I too am quite interested.

@Backtothey2k do you require a ladies maid in the near-ish future to take a tour of Europe with you?

I have always been drawn to this role and could make myself available. I am good at carrying baggage (literal, not metaphorical).

£50k+. More if I travel. So I'll travel ahead to other residence or hotels and unpack and get everything ready for their arrival. So all their food is in the fridge, makeup is laid out, clothes are in the wardrobe, dogs are there etc. They just turn up and seamlessly carry on.

This really takes the biscuit. Now you are telling OP who can look after her children. If she and the children are happy that's all that matters.
Incidentally, I think you would be hard pressed to find a nanny who would do housekeeping duties. Much easier to find a housekeeper who will look after the children for short periods.

I am not telling OP anything. I just thought that if you employed someone to look after your young children regularly you would probably want them to have relevant qualifications. It is a very different job.

Edited

I’m so glad you are not telling the OP anything. It sure sounded judgmental to me.

Exactly this. I am very private. But my housekeeper is a professional. She’s not rummaging through drawers and reading personal stuff. She is a life saver for us. And we have such a much higher quality of life because she’s a part of our life. My children love her (even though they are older and they need supervising more than actual child care) it’s not the same at all as a cleaner in terms
of profession.

When I had a cleaner I did leave a list of all the things I needed done and now I don’t have to worry at all. The only thing is she doesn’t pack for me (as I’m just too difficult) but she will pack the children and my husband.

Nofeckingway · 01/10/2026 14:36

Your sister sounds jealous . Or is she just trying to get you to justify having someone help you . Which you do not have to do . My sis was like this . I said that I didn't question her expenditures like smoking, drinking , beauty stuff , hairdressers , etc. so stop bothering me .

walrushurricane · 28/09/2026 10:39

Previously you just saud that they also do ironing, change bedsheets etc. You didn't mention childcare. Surely childcare should be done by someone qualified to do it?

The post was not about my housekeeper and more about my sister . so didn’t list her full job description . As it has nothing to do with my OP . Interesting you assume no other adults are in the house . You also don’t no the ages of my children . But ok 🤣. Is there anything else you would like to give your opinion on 🧐. Seems as you know all the facts and ins and out of my whole family apparently 😬😁.

What on earth does she find to do, every other day?
Do you live in a ten-bedroomed mansion?

Hello! I can answer that- Housekeeper here. I used to be a cleaner but as a Housekeeper you can ask me to do just about anything- I do the ironing, laundry (which a lot of cleaners won't) tidy up, organise cupboards and drawers, "reset" every room after it's been used, I repair clothes (I'm a seamstress so granted might not be every Housekeeper- though I'm sure many do things like basic repairs and sewing school labels), help to prepare or prepare dinner/lunch/lunch boxes. Walk the dog, pick up prescriptions/organise dry cleaning, do your food shopping.. I've even mowed lawns and helped kids with piano practise, babysitting, more or less anything that'll save you time and make life easier.
Oh, and cleaning.

I’m amazed how many people don’t know the difference between a housekeeper and a cleaner .
A cleaner , cleans your house
A housekeeper also cleans but also does other tasks. Irons , change bedding , washing , puts clothes away , empty dish washer etc

My cleaner does this. I might start referring to her as a housekeeper.

Same. She will be pleased to "upgrade" her title 🤣

TriciaA1991 · 25/10/2026 15:31

I wish I could find a cleaner who did more than hoover and throw toilet cleaner in the loo, and push a cloth round the washbasins. Have tried about 6 with costs between £28 and £45 an hour and none know how to clean. Given up now but maybe I will look for a housekeeper who can also manage my ineptitude at finding a decent cleaner.
