AIBU to ask my sister to stop asking about the housekeeper?

I have a lovely housekeeper who comes every other day (not weekends). Yes, I know this might seem like a lot to some, but I don’t like cleaning. It is the last thing I want to do when I finish work. I like everything to be done so I can just get on with making dinner and spending time with my family.
Yet, every time my sister calls (we live in different parts of the country), she seems more interested in what my housekeeper has done today rather than me and her nephews. I just do not understand why she is so invested in it.
Would I be rude to ask her to stop asking about what the housekeeper has done? I just want to catch up with my sister, not talk about chores.

Out of curiosity - when you mean the OP doesn’t have a housekeeper what do you mean? That the OP is lying or your don’t think a housekeeper is a thing? Because again a house manager (where I live at least) is different than a housekeeper which is then different than a cleaner.

It’s been thoroughly covered.

And why do you assume my housekeeper doesn’t do these things plus more. I didn’t list everything and it varies greatly . I was giving a brief description as it has nothing to do with my OP . And I wasn’t asking people if I had a housekeeper or cleaner 🤣. Even tho that’s what this post has turned into.

Where have I assumed that your housekeeper doesn’t do those things? I merely responded to your post setting out what a housekeeper did, which was actually a list of things a cleaner does. For me, one of the things that the a housekeeper does is organise and manage the cleaners! If your list had housekeeper activities then my reply would have been different :)

As for your original question, I’m unsure what’s so difficult. Just tell your sister you have no idea what the housekeeper has done as the whole point of having staff is so that you don’t have to get involved in the detail ;)

They just want to knock you down a peg or two OP. It brings them great joy.

Cassiteiri · 27/09/2026 18:49

What's the back story op? You asked a question about why your sis was interested. No actual details other than that she's a housekeeper and not a cleaner by your def which seems to be extremely important to emphasise. Are you a nouveau riche? Is your sister not? Why do You think she's interested?

Backtothey2k · 27/09/2026 18:54

Maybe I should change the post to ,do I have a housekeeper or cleaner . 🤣 as the obsession is crazy. Glad this is only up for 24 hours and will no longer be replying to this madness . So please don’t tag me . Opinions do not replace facts I have said very little but the assumptions are crazy .🤪 😂. But apparently strangers on the internet. No what type of house I have , what job I have oh one even suggested my husband sleeps with the housekeeper 🤣. So maybe she’s not a cleaner or a housekeeper . (Because apparently she’s a prostitute) women supporting women as always . Some of you really need a break for mumsnet . We don’t all have the same lived experiences and it would be boring if we did .

Soo what does the housekeeper do every other day?

Jimmyjumpy · 27/09/2026 19:07

Just ask her. Why do you need advice on something so unimportant?

Because it's plenty for you, it should be plenty for everyone else?

Oh no, not at all. I'm just dead curious (and a little bit jealous 😁).

Moveoverdarlin · 27/09/2026 19:20

Ha ha! That’s a cleaner.

Teenybeen · 27/09/2026 19:23

I think if she wants to call herself a housekeeper and that’s what she advertised herself as it’s absolutely fine to call her that.

My cleaner started off as a cleaner and over time, especially since I had a baby she’s picked up more and more tasks. She comes 3 times a week to help clean, do washing, ironing, change the bedding etc. She doesn’t spend all day here though, and we pay her an hourly fee. Nobody really asks about her but she’s not here for 3 full days and we call her a cleaner. I think people would be more interested if she was here for full days and we called her the housekeeper though. Probably not enough to ask every time we chatted though!

She also isn’t just a cleaner, she has other clients whose dogs she walks, takes to the vets, does their food shopping, picks up prescriptions. I would say she’s more of a handy woman as she does a bit of everything and is absolutely fantastic. I think she just has an hourly fee she charges everyone for her time.

HRTQueen · 27/09/2026 19:25

I would be asking to so I could add to my daily daydreams of living such a life

It’s been thoroughly covered.

What’s been thoroughly covered? I asked for your take on it and you seem to disagree with the OP using the term housekeeper. I have had a housekeeper and a cleaner and I can guarantee you that the cleaners job is not as comprehensive as the housekeeper. And so other people on this thread have commented the same. So my question really was so do you think that OP doesn’t have a housekeeper as in because she’s lying or in your view a housekeeper is someone that only comes in 5 times a week? Because that is not the case anymore.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/09/2026 19:27

I bet OP calls the local cabbie her driver too. LOL.

Someone who comes to your house three times a week is a ‘housekeeper’?

I thought housekeepers lived in....

It’s the housekeeper in question who calls herself a housekeeper. I imagine if she called herself a cleaner the OP would also call her a cleaner.

Well perhaps she’s asking because she doesn’t understand the difference as I certainly don’t and it seems I’m not the only one!

I be a house keeper rather than cleaner who just cleans. I still call her the clraner but I know she isn't
She wakes irons, shops runs errands like taking things to the dry cleaning, she walks them dog at lunch time and she cleans. Why because I work ridiculous hours and like to have a tidy home. I would ask her why she is asling a nd if it is because she doesn't understand the difference then you can explain and stop the questioning

We had housekeepers when I was a child. They worked Monday to Friday and did cleaning and chores likes going to the post office, picking up milk.

My cleaner does all the things your housekeeper does. Maybe “housekeeper” just sounds fancier when she tells people what she does for work 🤷🏼‍♀️

Your sister is just curious what there is for her to do for all those hours.

You expect your cleaner to sort out food in the fridge, put your shopping away, be there when your children get home, wash, dry, iron and put away your families clothing?
Shameful if so.

Well yes and so did half the thread. OP simply listed cleaners’ duties. Not accused OP of lying. I don’t need you to guarantee me anything thanks.

AmnesiacDream · 27/09/2026 19:43

OP this is your sister. You are going to know better than any random poster on MN (and certainly better than some sort of crowd sourced average) what will come across as rude to her.

if this were my sister I’d just say “Of for gods sake, the same things she always does. Can we please talk about something more interesting?” And since I come from an informal family who often speak to each other like that if something has become irritating and no one takes offense, it would be fine. My DH’s family is a bit less candid with each other, especially with the women, so he could say that to his brother, but not his sister.

I'm not sure why it's same if that's what they agreed when she was taken on.

Our housekeeper costs less per hour than most cleaning companies we enquired with. We went with the housekeeper because they just offer a larger range of services which better met what we needed.

I know, I can imagine the outrage if someone posted ‘AIBU to expect my cleaner to be there after school to look after my kids while I’m at work?’. This thread is hilarious. So many people desperate to knock the OP down a peg or two.

SpookyHalloweenDeviledEggs · 27/09/2026 19:47

Going to admit it OP I just wish to be you when I am a real grown up. I am a grown up but I'm sure there's another level to be unlocked. Good on you OP if you can afford it your keeping somebody in some work.

I’m amazed how many people don’t know the difference between a housekeeper and a cleaner .
A cleaner , cleans your house
A housekeeper also cleans but also does other tasks. Irons , change bedding , washing , puts clothes away , empty dish washer etc

I'm a cleaner and do the cleaning, bedding, ironing, tidying. I would never call myself a housekeeper!
