AIBU to ask my sister to stop asking about the housekeeper?

Backtothey2k · 27/09/2026 12:52

I have a lovely housekeeper who comes every other day (not weekends). Yes, I know this might seem like a lot to some, but I don’t like cleaning. It is the last thing I want to do when I finish work. I like everything to be done so I can just get on with making dinner and spending time with my family.
Yet, every time my sister calls (we live in different parts of the country), she seems more interested in what my housekeeper has done today rather than me and her nephews. I just do not understand why she is so invested in it.
Would I be rude to ask her to stop asking about what the housekeeper has done? I just want to catch up with my sister, not talk about chores.

I'm a cleaner and do the cleaning, bedding, ironing, tidying. I would never call myself a housekeeper!

Why wouldn’t you? What’s wrong with calling yourself a housekeeper when you’re doing the job of a housekeeper?

LaurieFairyCake · 27/09/2026 19:58

I think this thread has just totally illuminated why your sister is obsessed with it since everyone else seems to be 😂😂😂

I don't know to be honest. I think a housekeeper sounds more grandiose than what I see myself doing 🤣

Ha ha! That’s a cleaner.

Well aren’t you original.

I know, I can imagine the outrage if someone posted ‘AIBU to expect my cleaner to be there after school to look after my kids while I’m at work?’. This thread is hilarious. So many people desperate to knock the OP down a peg or two.

It's so transparent though 🤣 jealousy is a hell of a drug as they say.
Makes people type all kinds of shite.

LadyMuckNot · 27/09/2026 20:18

I have a full time Housekeeper, they live in. They do everything I would have traditionally done as a the full time housewife and mum to many children I was for decades. Now there’s no need for me to do it all so I don’t but Im still hands on and I like to cook a lot of my meals myself. I have a full and busy life and I’m a very hands on granny, I’m also a full time caregiver to one of my children.

As for running my house I only ever do enough nowadays to put my mark on it.

RampantIvy · 27/09/2026 20:23

Well, this has been an entertaining and informative thread.

Marieb19 · 27/09/2026 20:25

It would appear that your sister is as myopic and jealous as some MN posters. I loved the post suggesting you give your housekeeper's phone number to your sister, so she can check her daily activities directly, as she is so interested.

Well yes and so did half the thread. OP simply listed cleaners’ duties. Not accused OP of lying. I don’t need you to guarantee me anything thanks.

Didn’t mean to upset you. I also didn’t say you accused the OP of lying. I’m simply trying to understand your thinking and where your opinions are coming from. Just engaging in a debate. You’re not interested in that. That’s fine. I won’t ask you any further questions.

I’m not upset in any way. 😂

Yogafiend · 27/09/2026 21:08

Glad to hear that - as that was not my intention. Just the “I don’t need you to guarantee me anything” comment came across as upset - which glad to hear I interpreted wrong.

Aluna · 27/09/2026 21:10

I just meant I know what a housekeeper is…

Sounds to me you had a choice a house keeper or paying for care and respect for choosing to care for your child yourself.

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 27/09/2026 22:43

She's jealous and trying to work out if she can afford to have one too.

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 27/09/2026 22:49

For those of you objecting to the OP using the term housekeeper, I think there is a real difference, at least I hope there is. I have had many cleaners over many years and not one of them has run my home in the way I would have expected from a housekeeper.

It's obvious that a cleaner wouldn't look after children though. Not sure why they wouldn't iron if that is the agreement

Obviously if that's the agreement, but most cleaners won't agree to ironing. They don't see it as a cleaning task.

Why not? I know people whose cleaners will do some ironing. It depends on how much time they have rather than whether they are called a housekeeper.

Aluna · 27/09/2026 23:17

I’ve employed cleaners for 30 years, only had one in that time who didn’t iron.

Ohdearnotthisagain · 27/09/2026 23:19

I think the suggestion of “given you’re so interested shall I give you her number so you can ask all your questions” is a good one.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/09/2026 23:49

BugJuice · 27/09/2026 19:32

It’s the housekeeper in question who calls herself a housekeeper. I imagine if she called herself a cleaner the OP would also call her a cleaner.

I bet she wouldn’t. She’s argued with everyone on here who said she sounds like a run of the mill cleaner. Hence why her sister is very intrigued with the fact she has a housekeeper.

I’ve had four cleaners, they all have ironed. And most say it’s their favourite job as it’s not particularly strenuous.

My Mum had a cleaner for years when we were young and she’d come once a week and ironed all my Dad’s work shirts and mine and my 3 siblings school shirts so it worked out at 5 shirts x 4 people so 20 shirts.

Ponoka7 · 28/09/2026 01:22

@LadyMuckNot housekeepers don't have to live in.
My BIL/SIL had one. It was her that arranged the window cleaning, the pool maintenance and paid them. It was the days of cash. She'd sort the dry cleaning. Take stuff to the charity shop. Post letters, get travel money. Help pack for holidays. Get jewellery cleaned. Clothes/shoes mended etc. Run errands. Get fresh flowers. My SIL liked to shop, so she did some shopping. My BIL liked to oversee the gardeners, so he did that. The housekeeper also did the cleaning and tidying. She'd wrap presents, help at parties and as said, run the house. She had the use of a small car. When she retired my B/SIL decided to downsize.

walrushurricane · 27/09/2026 13:20

I'm confused too. If everything is done why are you cooking dinner for everyone. What is there to do other than a bit of cleaning?

There is always cooking, laundry, ironing, filling and emptying dishwasher (or hand washing this), emptying bins, feeding the cat.....the list is endless and never ending!
