Where do you think Jewish people come from?

Antisemitism is at full volume at the moment and I caveat this post with saying that I have absolutely no wish to make Jewish MNers feel uncomfortable but as an an atheist with no connection to Israel this really makes my blood boil.

I see so many SM posts about the Jews having 'colonized' Israel and Judea & Samaria, not having any claim to the land, not being indigenous and of course being 'Europeans settlers'.

They can't answer where they actually come from though so I thought anyone on here who shares their views might be able to give an answer and how they came to that conclusion.

I understand that Jews are an ethnicity with Judaism as their religion. Being Jewish is not a religion. Jews are still today spread out all over the world with the majority living in Israel and the US.

This has come into focus since the UK Government sanctions on Jewish businesses in Judea & Samaria recently with Jewish communities living there classed as 'illegal settlers'.

It's almost as if Jews and Judea have no connection at all.

So AIBU to ask where the Jews originated from if not from there?

I don't feel this belongs on the CITME board as although the war in Gaza has amplified beliefs, this not directly about that.

Golders Green 😀. If you mean historically, Israel, Judea etc then I tend to think of Lviv/Odessa, Prague, Vienna, Poland, Germany, France…

Well they found other places to live in the intervening 2000 years.

If you found out that you distant ancestors where Danish, would you then start to think of Denmark as home? Would you force a Danish family out of their home, so you could take it?

Gonna guess you've not studied much history. Expulsions and exoduses of Jews - Wikipedia

I don’t think OP is arguing for the illegal settlements. She’s arguing for the state of Israel.

I thought she was saying that UK was wrong to sanction businesses etc on illegal settlements?

I thought the majority came from the Crimean peninsula

Then you thought wrong.

Good job I'm an atheist with no fixed nationality then.

That does not make someone immune to tribalism, which was the issue referenced. It just means the "tribe" isn't based on religion or nationality. People are tribal about everything from politics to TV shows to football to fandoms.

Well.... DHs jewish grandpa was from poland and the family had lived there hundreds of years.

My jewish friend at work was born into a family who have lived in the uk since the early 1900s, before that germany & france.

Most of the jewish people i know have strong connections/family background somewhere in europe. I think theres a semitic "origin" in the middle east generally in ancient times but few modern "peoples" originated in solely one place! "British" people are a mix of ancient bronze & iron age britons, romans, french norman settlers, vikings...

No fixed nationality? Your are stateless?

The pseudointellectuals like to think of countries as being completely artificial constructs and that people should be able to move around freely and live wherever they want...

... oh wait, that doesn't apply if white Europeans were to suggest going somewhere else and taking land, because that's colonisation of course.

It's all whataboutery. Mass starvation and bombing of civilian children is a genocide and needs to stop.

The question was about where Jewish people come from - and you start on about Gaza? Like literally there can't be a discussion about Jews without them being collectively blamed for what, btw, is not a genocide anyway.

‘Being Jewish is not an ethnicity.’

Ancestry.co.uk stated my ethnicity as 100% Ashkenazi Jewish. Not just European with a list of European countries, but Ashkenazi Jewish with a region around Lithuania, Belarus and Latvia circled . I was brought up as an atheist and do not have any religious beliefs. I did not expect Jewish to appear on my DNA test as my ethnicity.

Same for my partner. Eastern Europe circled. Dark hair, jet black eyes and skin which tans easily.

PetiteParakeet · 23/09/2026 21:29

OP has put quote marks around “illegal settlers”. I’m sorry, but the settlers in the West Bank (against whom the sanctions are directed) are living in illegal settlements no matter where their ancestors lived 2000 years ago.
You don’t have to do any complicated research, just look at something like Wikipedia - confiscation of Palestinian land to build settlements, eviction of communities, restrictions on movement of Palestinians within the West Bank, attacks on Palestinians harvesting olives, widespread destruction of olive trees, violent attacks by settlers…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israelisettlement
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israelisettlerviolence
These aren’t sanctions against all Jewish businesses in Israel they are specifically aimed at settlers not only illegally occupying land but with an ideological mission of continual expansion to ultimately take control the whole of the West Bank, supported by the current Israeli government.

Everyone knows that Jewish people originally come from the Judaea area. The clue's in the name. They may have been born and raised in London or wherever, but that region is their ancestral homeland.

The region is also the ancestral homeland of many Arabs/Muslims too, of course, although their origins are spread over a much wider geography.

What's that got to do with the thread? Not that there's a genocide anyway.

canklesmctacotits · 23/09/2026 21:30

It's a nonsense question. Do all Muslims come from and have a right to live in Saudi Arabia? What about the inverse - do all holders of the Shinto faith HAVE to live in Japan?

There are plenty of current and historic examples of politics driving religion, even if we tend to frame these arguments in the inverse. Some might argue they are one and the same. Today's Jewish settlers in the West Bank is just another example.

Neither did Palestine. It was all part of the Ottoman empire.

The two state solution which Palestine rejects.

I didn’t say the Palestinian authorities were right either!

I’m pro the ordinary people who live there - Palestinian and Israeli both - who want to live normal, peaceful lives, not either government/ leadership. Anyone who falls into the “wanting to live ordinary peaceful lives” category and understands that everyone has a right to this is Ok with me.

Perhaps they would if an Austrian psychopath hadn’t murdered 6 million of them.

I wonder why Austria/Germany isnt held to account for the holocaust? Maybe some reparations are due?

think they did pay reparations, but to the allied governments, not the Jews.

Two thirds of European Jews were wiped out in the Holocaust, the treatment of Jews in the Middle East was hardly amazing either, and you wonder why they feel the need to have a homeland?

True. I am delighted every time Ireland stuff England in the 6 nations. And I can tolerate that Lewis Hamilton is driving for Ferrari. Even though he continues to whine.

But I don't have any time for people who think their imaginary friend is better than another person's imaginary friend.

BlessedIsTheFruit · 23/09/2026 21:34

Well some people just can't help themselves can they?

Not all Jews are Israeli and not all Israelis are Jews.

With reference to Judea & Samaria which a poster took offence to, it was only after Jordan took control and illegally occupied the area in 1948 that it was renamed the 'West Bank'. Literally meaning the west bank of the Jordan river.

Prior to that even the UN referred to the area as the 'hill country of Samaria and Judea', as it was known for thousands of years, in the Partition Plan, so the international community has adopted a name that a country that invaded and illegally occupied for 19 years, renamed it to. Again rather perverse.

Up to 40,000 Jews who lived in the area, including the Jewish Quarter of Old Jerusalem, were driven out, killed or taken prisoner and property destroyed or confiscated.

Yes I believe making the area Jew free (as Palestinian towns and villages are) is perverse and it is Jews who own Jewish businesses in Judea and Samaria so it is Jews who have been targetted.
