Where do you think Jewish people come from?

Antisemitism is at full volume at the moment and I caveat this post with saying that I have absolutely no wish to make Jewish MNers feel uncomfortable but as an an atheist with no connection to Israel this really makes my blood boil.

I see so many SM posts about the Jews having 'colonized' Israel and Judea & Samaria, not having any claim to the land, not being indigenous and of course being 'Europeans settlers'.

They can't answer where they actually come from though so I thought anyone on here who shares their views might be able to give an answer and how they came to that conclusion.

I understand that Jews are an ethnicity with Judaism as their religion. Being Jewish is not a religion. Jews are still today spread out all over the world with the majority living in Israel and the US.

This has come into focus since the UK Government sanctions on Jewish businesses in Judea & Samaria recently with Jewish communities living there classed as 'illegal settlers'.

It's almost as if Jews and Judea have no connection at all.

So AIBU to ask where the Jews originated from if not from there?

I don't feel this belongs on the CITME board as although the war in Gaza has amplified beliefs, this not directly about that.

How is that relevant? The question is about Jews.

It's relevant because the only true ancestral homeland all humans have got is Africa. To try to claim that one particular group of humans subsequently migrated to one particular spot on the earth before anyone else did and that this dubious claim somehow gives their possible descendants special rights over that patch of land is specious.

Judea, also Jews have lived there forever, I know a Palestinian whose grand parents lived next to Jews in Jerusalem ages before everything kicked off. She said they were friends. In 1900 Jews made up 50% - 60% of Jerusalem.

Theres this weird idea that a bunch of Jews turned up from europe and just stole land. Half of Jewsih Israelis come from places like Iraq, Iran, Yemen etc. Vast majority of land was bought from landowners at ten times the price it was worth according to British newspapers at the time.

I'm ethnically Indian but I don't have Indian citizenship. I can't live in India without a residence permit of some sort.

More importantly, I think you are conflating two issues quite disingenuously actually. I am sure you are aware that the sanctions are against illegal settlements in occupied territory. They are not against businesses operating in Israel.

What has India’s citizenship rules got to do with Israel?

Jewish people are not a single ethnicity, but the original (2000+ years ago) population was from the area around Jerusalem - that population did spread out and will have married locally so there’s no single ethnicity for all Jews. There are Jewish people all over the world in fact and of many different ethnicities. Ultra Orthodox Jews tend to have a very specific lineage, but I know quite a few converts to Reform Judaism

Judaism is an ethnoreligion.

mindutopia · 23/09/2026 20:47

It’s worth pointing out that being Jewish is much more about being part of a culture than an ethnicity. I think the argument you’re making oversimplifies things a bit and misses the heterogeneity of Jewish people.

I’m Jewish, but I’m not ethnically Jewish as in I’m not someone who can trace my lineage back to the Jewish diaspora. Well, or at least no more than Bob my neighbour, who is Christian can. I am religiously and culturally Jewish, but I do not have proper Jewish ancestry in an ethnic sense (because I’m the result of conversion to Judaism). There are lots of people like me for whom that claim doesn’t quite make sense. I don’t really know where I came from. The African continent, I suppose? But best I can tell, for many centuries, it’s England. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That doesn’t mean my ties to Jewish culture are not strong.

Germany has paid reparations for the holocaust, I just googled it:

By 2018, the German government had paid roughly $86.8 billion in restitution and compensation, and total disbursements have since surpassed €80 billion. 1, 2]

Germany continues to refuse legitimate reparations claims from Poland and Greece. It also continues to be insincere in its response to reparations claims from Africa.

MaidsRoom · 23/09/2026 20:48

Well the literal answer to your question, if you believe the Jewish Scriptures, is Egypt.

YANBU for using the terms Judea and Samaria which as I’m sure you know are heavily loaded terms, not recognised by Palestinians, and pre-suppose an answer. Those are the terms used by the Hebrew people who lived there 2000 years ago. They were largely evicted by the Romans, dispersed around Europe and the Middle East, and later North America, and miraculously maintained a distinct ethnic, cultural and religious identify over two millennia despite living as minorities amongst non-Jews, often under severe persecution. This was in large part due to their successful preservation of a rich written scriptural tradition including a detailed history stretching back to the Bronze age.

But that doesn’t mean they have more claim to the land than the myriad of other peoples who have lived there over the last 2000 years. Under UN Resolution the State of Israel has a right to exist within its pre-1967 borders. It has no right to land beyond those borders, especially if it involves people with no identifiable personal or familial link to that land kicking out families who have farmed a particular place for generations and have nowhere else to go.

Perhaps they would if an Austrian psychopath hadn’t murdered 6 million of them.

I wonder why Austria/Germany isnt held to account for the holocaust? Maybe some reparations are due?

Germany did pay reparations. Google it

The best evidence available so far is that homo sapiens originated somewhere in/near modern day Ethiopia. Everything past that is migration.

Have to say, this is what I was going to say!

It doesn’t really matter if those Jewish people moving into/ establishing illegal settlements had roots on that land at some point in their ancestry. That land was legally designated as Palestinian - as belonging to Palestinian people who will also have ancestors who lived on that land.

My matriarchal ancestry is Norwegian (if you go back as far as I’m able to entirely on the female line, as you would in Judaism). Doesn’t give me the right to go and take someone’s house in Norway.

I totally agree with Israel’s right to exist but within legal limits and hopefully in time with a viable two state solution, so alongside a viable Palestinian state. Not by just killing all Palestinians and bulldozing their homes.

I don’t think OP is arguing for the illegal settlements. She’s arguing for the state of Israel.

I don’t think the Jewish scriptures say that plus even the koran identifies judea as the land of the jews, it even says god gave them that land.

Theres absolutely shit tons of archaeological evidence of Jewish habitation in Israel.

Haffiana · 23/09/2026 20:52

I am Jewish, and my mother and her mother's family came from a place called Safed in what is now Israel (it was called Palestine when my mother was born, and was in fact under British rule or mandate. It was also called Palestine when my grandmother was born, but was then under Ottoman -Turkish - rule. My grandmother was a child when the British liberated Palestine from the Turks in WW1 and she actually witnessed when General Allenby marched into Jerusalem) . Her family tree goes back many hundreds of years, all recorded as living in and around that area of the Galilee.

Ticktockk · 23/09/2026 20:55

HermioneWeasley · 23/09/2026 20:12

It’s bizarre isn’t it?

I come from that general area (but not Israel or Gaza specifically) and my family are Muslim though I am an atheist.

it seems to me indisputable that Jews originate from that land. The Al Aqsa mosque is built on top of the temple of Solomon - how on earth can Jews returning to their ancestral land (having survived an actual genocide) possibly be regarded as colonisers?

What do you mean by an “actual” genocide?

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 23/09/2026 20:57

I keep referring these ignorant people to Life Of Brian that explains a lot of this situation very well imo.

You can really bamboozle people by discussing Rastafarianism.

I think she means jews being hunted down, herded in camps and then being killed in a systematic way entirely on the basis of their ethnicity. 6 million men women and children, taken to camps, possessions stolen, experimented on, enslaved and murdered. No particular reason for it though.

Any Jewish person has an automatic right to move to Israel and claim Israeli citizenship, and many do alongside their European citizenship. What is wrong with that?

Well there’s been cases of American Jews moving to the West Bank. These settlers can cause issues and harass the Palestinians living there. https://www.businessinsider.com/60000-american-jews-live-in-west-bank-settlements

The U.n say such settlements violate international law.

The Jewish settlers 'living the American dream' in the West Bank

US-born settlers are "overrepresented" in the occupied West Bank, which has seen a surge of violence against Palestinians since the October 7 attacks.

I don’t really know . DNA test came back as 100% European Jewish. Grandparents all came to the UK from Lithuania. But did their ancestors originally come from elsewhere? I’ve no idea. We certainly don’t look typically European . Appearance-wise we look more Mediterranean - very dark hair, olive skin. I identify as a British Jew. Whether the last few generations on our family originated from somewhere other than Eastern Europe I’d like to know.

Being Jewish is not an ethnicity.

I'm Jewish and I'm British, my parents are British, my grandparents were British, my great grandparents were British.

Sure, the Jewish people came from Judea/Israel. The problem is that the Jewish diaspora happened in AD70 and since then other people have lived there. We don’t normally go round allocating land on the basis of who lived there 2000 years ago, even if they were unfairly pushed out. The people whose ancestors lived in Israel 100 years ago feel that they have been unfairly pushed out. Who has more right to live there now?

Thank you!

We can argue this about Native Americans and Aborigines. When will they get their own lands back and rule over their lands? Quiet the opposite they been told to shut up and sit down.
In fact in the mid 1900s White colonozers in native lands of Americias took Native children to camps to remove their language, identity and religions. But thats ok? right? Not at all illegal or antisemitism?! Becuase not the right kind of "people".

We can not have one rule for "them" and another rule for everyone else.
We would then need to see mass migration of white folk back to Europe from Australia and Americas. Soooo unless thats gunna happen.... Everyone needs to settle down.

AgnesMcDoo · 23/09/2026 21:05

I have some Jewish friends in my social circle. Most of them come from Glasgow and a few from London.

Where do you come from OP?
