Where do you think Jewish people come from?

Antisemitism is at full volume at the moment and I caveat this post with saying that I have absolutely no wish to make Jewish MNers feel uncomfortable but as an an atheist with no connection to Israel this really makes my blood boil.

I see so many SM posts about the Jews having 'colonized' Israel and Judea & Samaria, not having any claim to the land, not being indigenous and of course being 'Europeans settlers'.

They can't answer where they actually come from though so I thought anyone on here who shares their views might be able to give an answer and how they came to that conclusion.

I understand that Jews are an ethnicity with Judaism as their religion. Being Jewish is not a religion. Jews are still today spread out all over the world with the majority living in Israel and the US.

This has come into focus since the UK Government sanctions on Jewish businesses in Judea & Samaria recently with Jewish communities living there classed as 'illegal settlers'.

It's almost as if Jews and Judea have no connection at all.

So AIBU to ask where the Jews originated from if not from there?

I don't feel this belongs on the CITME board as although the war in Gaza has amplified beliefs, this not directly about that.

Being Jewish is not an ethnicity.

I'm Jewish and I'm British, my parents are British, my grandparents were British, my great grandparents were British.

Being Jewish is an ethnicity. Just not for you.

MixedBananas · 23/09/2026 21:09

I am Moroccan Jewish and Arab but religiously Muslim. I am semetic both sides. I am not hounding the whole world and offing babies right left and centre and crying wolf every second of each day.

We forget about mass genocide of other natives but we favourite another. All I can do is laugh now. What about natives in Australia and Americas?
Until we see an equal approach to this with natives then it is a big ploy to push an agenda. And we know what that is. Securing the middle east from Iraq to the Nile in Egypt - the promised lands for the Zionists.

Each step of the way be sure to cry wolf.

Any Jewish person has an automatic right to move to Israel and claim Israeli citizenship, and many do alongside their European citizenship. What is wrong with that?

Roman Abramovich Oligarch and Chelsea owner did just that. Quite a lotvof Russian Jews have moved to Israel over the years

ZemblanityZen · 23/09/2026 21:09

I thought the majority came from the Crimean peninsula

Ketzele · 23/09/2026 21:11

Of course Jews originate from the Levant, and it is remarkable how genetically tight Ashlenazi Jews remain as a people despite hundreds of years of exile in Europe. Most Israelis, though, come from other countries in the region - and were driven out. Anti zionists who suggest Israelis should just 'go home' are ignoring the fact that, for most, there is no other home.

But "who lived there 2000 years ago" doesn't get you very far, in Israel or anywhere. Palestinians have an equally valid claim, and solutions will only be found by looking forward, not back.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/09/2026 20:50

Have to say, this is what I was going to say!

It doesn’t really matter if those Jewish people moving into/ establishing illegal settlements had roots on that land at some point in their ancestry. That land was legally designated as Palestinian - as belonging to Palestinian people who will also have ancestors who lived on that land.

My matriarchal ancestry is Norwegian (if you go back as far as I’m able to entirely on the female line, as you would in Judaism). Doesn’t give me the right to go and take someone’s house in Norway.

I totally agree with Israel’s right to exist but within legal limits and hopefully in time with a viable two state solution, so alongside a viable Palestinian state. Not by just killing all Palestinians and bulldozing their homes.

Edited

The two state solution which Palestine rejects.

ScholesPanda · 23/09/2026 21:12

So your argument is that if my ancestors lived in the land your house stands on, I can demand it back and drive you away with force if you won't give it to me.

Ok then.

Mrschickenlady · 23/09/2026 21:12

Well far enough back we can all trace our roots to other places. If you have ginger hair for example, far enough back you probably descended from Vikings but I don't think you'd expect to have a right to go and live in Sweden. So the ancestral argument doesn't have a lot of sway with me when we're talking about people who have lived in other places for hundreds or even thousands of years.

This is not me being anti-Israel by the way. I just think the ancestral homeland stuff is bull. To me the more immediate and pragmatic argument in favor of Israel's existence was and still is that it's been well proven for hundreds of years the Jewish people are not safe unless they have their own country with the political, economic and military power that comes with it.

Regardless the Israeli government needs to live peaceably with their neighbors and that means getting settler violence under control and working with the Palestinian leadership on a path to long-term peace.

I do wonder where some think the Israeli Jews should live? My friend's family was forced out of Iraq in the early 1900s. Aside from being in Israel for several generations now, there isn't an Iraq for them to return to, since they were unfairly pushed out of there too. They consider themselves Israeli. What's the answer?

Well they found other places to live in the intervening 2000 years.

If you found out that you distant ancestors where Danish, would you then start to think of Denmark as home? Would you force a Danish family out of their home, so you could take it?

Do some research.

Surely this thread is/ is part of the OPs research?

AirborneElephant · 23/09/2026 21:15

JimBobsWife · 23/09/2026 20:51

I don’t think OP is arguing for the illegal settlements. She’s arguing for the state of Israel.

No, I think she’s arguing that any Jewish person occupying any land in what was historically Judea or Samaria has more right to that land than the current occupants who have been there for many generations. And invoking the holocaust to justify current day atrocities is disgraceful.

Supersimkin7 · 23/09/2026 21:16

Everyone’s got one date in history they can pick where they were on top. Pleasing, but probably not grounds to sustain an argument.

Eyesopenwideawake · 23/09/2026 21:17

It's not something that ever crosses my mind. But I do wonder why some (I stress, some) Jewish people feel that their heritage is superior to that of other ancient religions.

The same reason that some people from every single ethnicity/religion/nationality/tribe think they are superior to others.

She is explicitly supporting the illegal settlements.

doodleygirl · 23/09/2026 21:20

@Eyesopenwideawake which Jews in particular are you talking about? Is this a scientific study or something you’ve made up in your own head?

BrummieKara · 23/09/2026 21:20

No, but neither would I suggest that someone whose great grandparents moved to Denmark and whose family has remained there for the past 100+ years doesn't belong there and should go somewhere else, no matter what their ethnic origin.

JustAlice · 23/09/2026 21:20

bridgetreilly · 23/09/2026 20:17

Sure, the Jewish people came from Judea/Israel. The problem is that the Jewish diaspora happened in AD70 and since then other people have lived there. We don’t normally go round allocating land on the basis of who lived there 2000 years ago, even if they were unfairly pushed out. The people whose ancestors lived in Israel 100 years ago feel that they have been unfairly pushed out. Who has more right to live there now?

+1
And by the way, can Turks or Greeks claim Crimea if they were there before Russia? Ukraine was not even an entity until XX century.

bestchooseanother · 23/09/2026 21:21

Judea, obviously. It's remarkable how strongly they have maintained their ethnic and cultural cohesion after 2,000 years, despite being attacked in every place they've ever tried to settle.

I'd also be very interested to know where people think the majority of 'palestinians' come from.

Jewish absolutely is.

And yet according to the last census the largest ethnic group in the UK is “white British”.

Good job I'm an atheist with no fixed nationality then.

TheEasterPangolin · 23/09/2026 21:23

‘Being Jewish is not an ethnicity.’

Ancestry.co.uk stated my ethnicity as 100% Ashkenazi Jewish. Not just European with a list of European countries, but Ashkenazi Jewish with a region around Lithuania, Belarus and Latvia circled . I was brought up as an atheist and do not have any religious beliefs. I did not expect Jewish to appear on my DNA test as my ethnicity.
