Where do you think Jewish people come from?

Antisemitism is at full volume at the moment and I caveat this post with saying that I have absolutely no wish to make Jewish MNers feel uncomfortable but as an an atheist with no connection to Israel this really makes my blood boil.

I see so many SM posts about the Jews having 'colonized' Israel and Judea & Samaria, not having any claim to the land, not being indigenous and of course being 'Europeans settlers'.

They can't answer where they actually come from though so I thought anyone on here who shares their views might be able to give an answer and how they came to that conclusion.

I understand that Jews are an ethnicity with Judaism as their religion. Being Jewish is not a religion. Jews are still today spread out all over the world with the majority living in Israel and the US.

This has come into focus since the UK Government sanctions on Jewish businesses in Judea & Samaria recently with Jewish communities living there classed as 'illegal settlers'.

It's almost as if Jews and Judea have no connection at all.

So AIBU to ask where the Jews originated from if not from there?

I don't feel this belongs on the CITME board as although the war in Gaza has amplified beliefs, this not directly about that.

I don’t think the Jewish scriptures say that plus even the koran identifies judea as the land of the jews, it even says god gave them that land.

Theres absolutely shit tons of archaeological evidence of Jewish habitation in Israel.

They do indeed say this. Genesis 37-50 plus the first bit of Exodus. Whether it’s true or not is another matter (the archaeological and non-Hebrew documentary evidence is sparse - possibly it’s an origin myth).

Nobody is disputing that the Hebrew people (nb this is the correct term for the period) lived for around a thousand years in the lands we currently know as Israel and Palestine - as you say the archaeological evidence is overwhelming. It’s not even a question.

But my slightly flippant answer to the OP’s question is true. The Hebrew Scriptures are clear that it was in Egypt that a single family became an ethnic people, which subsequently left and moved to Canaan, later known by the Hebrews as the lands of Judea and Samaria.

I seem to remember reading that ethnically there is little difference between Jewish and Arabic people. What I find ridiculous is that a group of people can claim a land on the basis they were given it by god thousands of years ago Whose god I wonder?
what would the world look
like today if countries were all restored to how they were 2 thousand years ago? Well goodbye Mr Trump to start with

That's incorrect and there is plenty of genetic evidence showing both Jews and Arabs as distinct ethnic groups.

Your post makes it sound like all the Jews left 2,000 years ago and then randomly decided to go back (not to mention belittling people's religious beliefs). That is incorrect. There have been Jews living as a minority in what is now Israel and the surrounding areas since the times of ancient Israel.

Given how living as a minority has usually resulted in persecution/expulsion/mass murder there was a growing movement to become independent (Zionism).

The right to self-determination is enshrined in the UN Charter for all peoples. That's all Zionism is; Jewish self-determination.

I used Ed Sheeran as an example of the Gaza situation presenting itself in forums unrelated to politics.
Macklemore should have kept his mouth shut.

Macklemore is just another two bit rapper who is involving himself in something he's not part of. Jewish people's right to exist means naff all during these wankers' morale crusades. Big gobs wearing keffiyehs aren't going to solve an unsolvable centuries old problem.

Why the inflammatory thread title?
Because here we have another person who hates Jews.

You could have just read my OP in the time it took you to type that.

To save you being confused, I stand with the Jews.

They didn’t self-determined. UN brought Jewish ppl there after WWII and gave them land, because there was no better option.

LivingTheDreamish · 23/09/2026 22:55

I'm sure this is an imperfect over simplification (so happy to be corrected on any point), but if you read the history of the Jewish people in the bible, they came from that general area but never had a homeland, until God gave them Israel and Judea as their possession (the story of Moses etc.). They were never a people group based on where they lived, they were Jewish by dint of being the descendants of Abraham. Many centuries and the Jewish diaspora later, the State of Israel was created and those lands were given back to the Jewish people as reparation for the holocaust and to provide them with a safe homeland. Both times it was indeed a rough deal for the people who were living there at the time, but who is to argue with (1) God and (2) the Allied Powers.

As an aside about Germany, whenever I meet a German and they realize i am British (I live abroad) without fail they mention the war and their sense of national shame and remorse. These are young men in their 20s and I find it moving. I can only hope that if they encounter a Jewish person they do this x100.

For all this talk of anti semitism I've literally never encountered it IRL. Only people complaining about Muslims/Pakistanis and occasionally Romanians etc.

Indeed, it was a quick fix that created a long-lasting territorial conflict (to add to many others created by Big Powers all over the world).

CrazyMidget · 23/09/2026 23:01

I'm not well-versed in the topic, so I appreciate I'm probably naive, but I think Jews and Palestinians should share the land equally. And not with people of different factions all shoved in ghettos. Everyone should be able to live wherever they want, like in the UK. They need to start again. A new country, a new name, (Israelistine?) and everyone to be equal citizens.

Told you I was naive.

@NancyThompson Israel existed as far back as the Iron Age. Not in today's 1948 format, but before the concept of modern countries as we know them. Israel existed as a collection of small kingdoms (as did what's now the United Kingdom, around that time). Modern Israels occupies a significant proportion of the same land as ancient Israel. So, all things considered, it's inaccurate to say that Israel didn't exist before 1948. That's why there are so many references to Israel and the Israelites in the Bible. And Jesus was from that area, obviously, and he was Jewish.

But in between the Iron age and 1948 theres a lot of history and a lot of different people! Jewish & israeli, muslims, christians, The assyrian empire ...then the babylonians.... persians & seleucids... The romans. Byzantine. The ottoman empire. British mandatory palestine .....

Its a very, very complex region that a lot of different groups consider to be a homeland. None of them trump the others.

I actually meant to reply to the poster that @NancyThompson was replying to, who said that Israel didn't exist before 1948. That reply has been deleted though, so I don't know who made it.

Why do you say that? Would that not be a good solution? Just because it's never gonna happen, doesn't mean it's not a good idea.

Basically NATO decides, which ethnicity trumps the others.

What do you mean by an “actual” genocide?

Possibly the attempt to industrially exterminate them as a people?

Well it’s an interesting question. There’s quite a few questions actually.

So interested in the responses too.

It's almost as if Jews and Judea have no connection at all.

You have lost me a bit at this point though.

My parents lived and thus I grew up in one of the richest postcodes in London. I am not owed a house there regardless that’s where I have come from.

So where someone’s from and living they are completely two different things. As is ‘settling’ pretty alien to most developed nations. Many would consider that just a fancy word for stealing.

If you already own it/ have a claim to it. Then you don’t need to settle it. So I am pretty sure we are all talking about the same thing here physically - many just have a different moral view on that.

Edited

Your analogy doesn’t make sense. You know where your family came from so despite living in fancy area, you don’t think you are a native.

Do you know where Jew came from? If you do, please post it here.

They didn’t self-determined. UN brought Jewish ppl there after WWII and gave them land, because there was no better option.

No. That is incorrect.

Britain was in control of what is now modern Israel and was battling to control the independence movements of the Jews and Arabs living there. They severely restricted Jewish immigration, leaving many Jews trapped in refugee camps. The UN helped to care for those in the refugee camps but did not bring Jews to Israel.

Jews continued trying to get to Israel, despite Britain's attempts to stop them.

The UN concluded that the Jews and Arabs wanted fundamentally different political futures and the only way possible stable future was for the land to be split. The Arabs rejected it, preferring an Arab-majority state with a Jewish minority. Israel declared independence (choosing self-determination).

The idea that Israel was somehow handed to the Jews is nonsense. The UN no more gave the Jews land, then they did the Arabs.
