AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

Bloody hell- I’d give her an extra £20 on top of what your paying her and just shower for as long as you like. It can’t be about the money it seems like she needs/wants control.

The odd thing is she's probably more well off than anyone else in the family! She got a big payout many years ago - I'm talking over £200,000 - from a harassment case at work and used that to pay off her house. She still works but if you don't have a mortgage, kids, partner, pets... what could you possibly be spending it on? She doesn't travel and her hobbies are all home based and cheap.

Who is the "everyone" whose shower times she's logging, if she doesn't have kids or a partner? You would have said "both" or "our" if it was just the two of you. Who else is living with her and how do they fit into this picture?

FriendlyMedusa · Yesterday 01:49

Unpopular opinion but YABU because people can be as neurotic as they like about their own home.

You don't have to like the way she runs her household, but you don't get to criticise it either.

I would check it's not actually about there only being one bathroom or something else at play. But to be honest I think this thread is a creative writing exercise as you mention her weight for no reason but to paint a mean picture.

Seacatt · Yesterday 02:31

DS sounds like my DS, who is also 4 years older than me.
I was using the toilet at her house when the light went off suddenly.
DS had decided it wasn't dark enough for it to be on!
I have plenty more examples but I won't bore you with them.
You just can't win, I just hope you won't be there for too long. 💐

Delphiniumandlupins · Yesterday 02:46

If she has a Smart Meter she (and you) could actually see how much each shower is costing although I don't think this would be healthy for her. Why not decide that you will pay in advance for a 10 minute shower every day and she doesn't have to give you a refund if you're quicker. Her behaviour is very odd, try not to get stressed by it.

FFSItsTooHot · Yesterday 03:30

Jesus Christ. I don't know how you put up with this. Being tight with money is a mistake unattractive quality on anyone.

Withoutwings · Yesterday 04:17

Another “anti - Karen” story?

rwalker · Yesterday 04:49

I’m not getting the drama just be in the shower as long as you want and get her to bill you accordingly

grinandslothit · Yesterday 05:03

I think I would just bung her some money so she won't be harassing you everyday about 2p

She sounds mentally unwell tbh and that type of behavior is abusive

givemesteel · Yesterday 05:04

She sounds like she is autistic and/or has OCD.

It doesn't surprise me that she doesn't have a partner / kids / pets. She sounds like a pretty miserable woman..

As PP say just overpay for your share of stuff and hope your flat repairs are done sooner rather than later.

Antipodeana · Yesterday 05:09

OP, you should have written in your original post that you had offered to buy food and pay her money, and that she declined this offer because it seems like most posters have assumed you’re being cheeky and not paying your way.
if you’re paying £400 a month then take your showers, and let them last as long as you want.
at 16p for 7 minutes, it works out to less than £1 a week for showers by your sisters metrics. So £100 well and truly covers your share of the gas, electric and water.
Your sister was being quite obtuse to make the comment over a take out coffee if you had offered to pay your way too… so ignore her. Go and buy your coffees, live your life and hopefully you’ll be back in your own flat soon.

BCBird · Yesterday 05:14

It does not dound like a nice environment, but it is her house and you can leave. I think giving her some money each week might be best if live alone, money is not plentiful. I would not do this, but it is costing her more you being there without a doubt

FruAashild · Yesterday 05:35

Anyahyacinth · Yesterday 00:25

A harassment payout, that paid at that level..would have had a significant level of harm maybe that changed your sister?

The idea that your sister should feel secure in such a volatile world as a person living alone and responsible for her own financial well-being ...because her house is paid off is lacking understanding too...there are many other costs to living. Higher impact costs on one income.

The five minute showers may be about money, environment...maybe you could ask for the whys and not assume? Maybe you could repay her hospitality with curiosity and understanding?

This comment needs highlighting. Your sister's issues are not your fault and you don't need to feel guilty for upsetting her because whatever you or anyone else does will cause this reaction. It's all about her needing control of small things. So don't get upset by it, view it as her problem that is a bit inconvenient to you, but ultimately says nothing about you and your behaviour. It is her that is unwell. Next time she asks for money say 'Karen, I really appreciate what you are doing for me and don't mind paying for the extra utilities, I offered you a weekly sum of money before I moved in. I really appreciate you letting me stay here but I don't want to cause you undue upset, and I can see that my showers are something you are struggling with but quibbling over such small amounts is unusual. If I give you the weekly lump sum I offered before will that help? Or is it something other than the money? Do you want to talk about how you are feeling, either to me as your sister or to a professional. Because, kindly, you should not be obsessing about the length of my showers to this degree when you know I'm happy to contribute to your costs while I'm here.

thepariscrimefiles · Yesterday 05:40

OnTheBoardwalk · 21/09/2026 22:45

Why does any of this matter?

she is putting you up, you are costing her money for electricity and probably her food

id give you max 3 weeks notice to stop your feed loading arse and get out of my house

JFC do you have to be so disgustingly rude to OP? She offered her sister £100 per week and to buy all the food and her sister said it wasn't necessary. Her sister's behaviour is pathological and it obviously fills some need to be controlling.

FruAashild · Yesterday 05:43

I do thiink it's unfortunate the OP didn't mention in the first post that she had offeŕd to contribute a reasonable amount because a lot of posters don't bother to read all the posts. I wish people would learn to at least read all the OP's posts before they comment.

TY78910 · Yesterday 05:46

A lot of PPs are saying just give her some money and be done with it. I actually don’t think that would shut her up. You could give her £500 and she would still make digs or set the timer, or bang on the bathroom door to ask what OP is doing. It’s weird and obsessive and people can dress it up in frugality all their want but this is a weird intense OCD.

cartagenagina · Yesterday 05:59

YANBU but honestly can’t you see the funny side?

I agree with bunging her a fiver and letting her get on with it. It’s only a few weeks.

Chickpeacurrywithrice · Yesterday 06:13

If she’s got a combi boiler she doesn’t set the water to get hot at a certain time, it’s constantly hot, that’s the idea of a combi boiler!

OP did mention a combi boiler, specifically and then mentioned the water being set to cone on, which is not a combi boiler, people missed that as well!

The two can’t be true.

Hi @DuchessOf
This sounds strange but "their house, their rules".

Your options:

  1. say thank you and leave (hotel or perhaps a friend or colleague may help you for the last few weeks?)

  2. stick it out and play the game

I hope you are close to the end of your time with them but TBF, they don't have to have you stay

Lugol · Yesterday 06:37

Throw a tenner at her and have as long a shower as you like.

She sounds like an abusive cunt and she needs some sort of professional help.

Looks like your Sister has found your thread 🤣

Can you find a gym that has nice showers and get a membership for the duration of your stay @DuchessOf ?

How are you ever shaving your legs or conditioning your hair?

Just give her a 20 and tell her to shut her mouth for the rest of your stay?
